Once a 19th-century brewhouse, this hotel was named after Emma Koehler, who ran the brewery after her husband died in 1914. She kept it thriving during Prohibition by converting her operations to drycleaning, and making ice cream and soda. The Hotel Figueroa was opened in 1926 by the YWCA, and was intended as a place for solo women travelers who were prohibited from staying at most hotels without a male chaperone. Over the years it has become a hub of social activism, hosting political rallies and press conferences, and was even a designated polling place during last year\u2019s election. As you walk through the colorful lobby, admire the original artwork by women honoring the hotel\u2019s roots. The Moroccan tiles and garden pathway that leads to an inviting pool make you feel like you\u2019re in Marrakesh, not downtown Los Angeles. The hotel was renovated in 2018 and now basks in its original Spanish Colonial grandeur.<\/p>\n
