It is one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica and was the pre-eminent Zapotec political and economic center for almost a thousand years, from 500 B.C. to 800 A.D. It&#8217;s hard not to be impressed by the magnitude of the Main Plaza and the structures around it. <strong>Mitla<\/strong>, a bit further out, was the main religious center for the Zapotec culture and is unique due to the elaborate mosaics and geometric designs that cover the tombs, panels and walls.
