Straight ahead, the white crescent of sand curves to the left, leading to the bluffs of <strong>Point Loma<\/strong> and the thrashing waters of the Pacific. Behind me is one of the most famous hotels in America, <a title=\"Hotel del Coronado\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/hotel\/United_States--CA\/Coronado\/Hotel_del_Coronado,_a_KSL_Property\/\" target=\"_self\">Hotel del Coronado<\/a>, looking like a multi-tiered wedding cake with its red-shingled roof and turrets. As I breathe in big gulps of salty air, I realize this has to be the image most people think of when they dream about California beaches.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Coronado is just the first of many magical spots you encounter as you make your way north on the state\u2019s 840-mile stretch of shoreline. It\u2019s nearly sacrilege to try to describe this natural wonder succinctly, but I\u2019ll do my best to quickly touch on my favorite <a href=\"..\/..\/App\/PerformMDLPDealsContent?deal_id=CA&amp;cnt=PKH\">California vacation<\/a> locales along the coast.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t miss the rocky shores of <strong>La Jolla<\/strong>, north of<a title=\"San Diego\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/PerformMDLPDealsContent?deal_id=sandiego-vacations&amp;cnt=OVI\" target=\"_self\"> San Diego<\/a> and the hard bods playing beach volleyball at <strong>Laguna Beach.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Become one more speck in the mass of humanity rollerblading, biking, and walking their dogs on the boardwalk along<strong> Venice Beach<\/strong> in <a title=\"Los Angeles\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/PerformMDLPDealsContent?deal_id=losangeles-vacations&amp;cnt=OVI\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Pick up a momento from the artists selling their wares at the <strong>Santa Barbara Pier.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Marvel at the hundreds of large elephantseals lounging, grunting, wrestling, and diving into the Pacific at <strong>Piedres Blancas<\/strong>, four miles north of <a title=\"Hearst Castle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hearstcastle.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hearst Castle<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Check out the precipitous rock, waterfalls, and wildflowers at <a title=\"Julia Pfieffer Burns State Park\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parks.ca.gov\/?page_id=578\" target=\"_blank\">Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park <\/a>near the hairpin turns of <strong>Big Sur<\/strong>.
