There\u2019s something about a cold Chicago<\/a> winter that makes the locals cherish summertime in the city. Come May, we crack open our windows for the first time in months and emerge from hibernation in anticipation of all that Chicago has to offer: the lush green parks, the miles of lakefront beaches, the beautifully manicured Mag Mile. Come summer, Chicago vacations take front and center for incredible big city fun, with numerous outdoor festivals, concerts<\/a>, and parades all season long. If you can believe it, there are over 400 in total from May through September! And, as a long-time resident of this fair city and an avid festival attendee, I give to you my top picks.<\/p>\n

\"Blackstone<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>

Blackstone Hotel<\/p><\/div>\n

Blues Festival, June 11-13<\/strong>:\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to go to a Blues Fest anywhere, it should be in Chicago. This weekend celebration features top Blues artists from around the world right here in the home of the blues. Get a good night\u2019s rest at the newly restored Blackstone Hotel<\/a>, an historic Chicago hotel steps from the fest.\u00a0 And, be sure not to miss a meal at Chicago\u2019s new gastronomic hot-spot, Mercat a la Planxa<\/strong>, on the ground floor of the Blackstone.\u00a0 It\u2019s popular for a reason\u2026 the food is out of this world.\u00a0 So, make a reservation.
\nInsider tip: <\/strong> Bring a blanket to the festival, preferably a water resistant one.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be sitting on the lawn for a while and knowing Chicago weather, it could be slightly wet.<\/p>\n

Taste Of Chicago, June 25 \u2013 July 4: <\/strong> Local restaurants serve up their signature dishes at this popular festival. Beside tasting fare from all corners of Chicago, you can enjoy live music all day long at one of The Taste\u2019s two stages. The food is hot, but the weather can be hotter. And when Chicago vacations heat up, it’s time for a dip at one of Chicago\u2019s few downtown pools located in the Essex Inn<\/a>. This family-friendly hotel across the street from the festival was recently renovated and can come with a nice price tag.
\nInsider tip:<\/strong> Visit the Taste on a weekday and you\u2019ll be less likely to have your Rainbow Cone bumped out of your hands. Also, enjoy Chicago\u2019s July 4th fireworks<\/strong> from the peninsula at the Adler Planetarium<\/strong> to avoid crowds at Navy Pier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pitchfork Music Festival, July 16-18: <\/strong>Somewhere in the depths of your closet is that green plaid flannel from \u201994. Pack it up and head over to the nation\u2019s hippest music festival, Pitchfork. You\u2019ll hear the globe\u2019s newest, most progressive bands and you\u2019ll grow your indie-cred to boot. Cool off after the shows with a PBR at Gold Star<\/strong> or Rainbow<\/strong>, two Wicker Park<\/strong> bars with an indie scene reputation. Then rest your ears for the night at the budget-friendly Congress Plaza Hotel<\/a>, an \u201cEl<\/strong>\u201d rideaway from the festival. Or, you can live like a rock star for a night at Hard Rock Hotel Chicago<\/a>. This musically infused hotel even includes complimentary Gibson guitar rentals. Rock on!

Join my family and me at this kid friendly neighborhood festival. For a taste of German culture year-round, Lincoln Square is still a great bet. Head on over to the Brauhaus<\/strong> for a fun-filled evening complete with an Oompa Band and its famous 2 liter beer \u201cboot.” For an authentic German dining and drinking experience, head south to my favorite place, Laschett\u2019s Inn<\/strong> on Irving Park Rd.\u00a0 You just can\u2019t beat the rouladen (or the free shot of schnapps at the end of the meal).
\nInsider tip:<\/strong> If you\u2019re staying downtown, jump on the El\u2019s Brown Line headed north and get off on at the Western stop.\u00a0 The festival is located in the train station\u2019s parking lot.<\/p>\n
