The Galapagos might be the ultimate nature lovers bucket list item but with the islands being so remote and with a number of conservation-driven restrictions in place, how exactly do you do it? Here\u2019s our first-hand guide to Darwin\u2019s playground.<\/span><\/div>\n

The Galapagos Islands lie 600 miles off the shores of Ecuador and are made up of 13 large islands, 7 minor ones and clusters of tiny pieces of land. <\/span>The archipelago is well known for its biodiversity and the research of naturalist Charles Darwin<\/span><\/span>. There are two main travel options for exploring the islands. Most choose cruise-based tours which visit 5-10 islands during a week long trip. Meanwhile,<\/span> others prefer to see the Galapagos in a more independent, land-based style<\/span><\/span>.

Getting there<\/strong>
\n<\/span>Flights to South American capitals are becoming cheaper every year. Round trip flights from U.S. hubs to Quito<\/a> can <\/span>be found<\/span><\/span> for around $600. From mainland Ecuador, you can take a regional flight out to the islands to start your trip. There are two commercial airports in the Galapagos. One is the Baltra Airport (Code: GPS) located on a small island off of the larger Santa Cruz Island. The second airport is San Cristobal (Code: SCY). <\/span>Flights can also be booked <\/span><\/span>directly<\/span><\/span> to the Galapagos from international destinations, <\/span><\/span>however<\/span><\/span> booking <\/span><\/span>separately<\/span><\/span> allows for the options of exploring Quito<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

When to go<\/strong>
\n<\/span>Due to its location on the equator, the temperatures stay <\/span>relatively<\/span><\/span> steady all year long. From December to May the water and air temps are <\/span>slightly<\/span><\/span> higher and the seas are generally calmer. <\/span>During this time, the islands see <\/span><\/span>slightly<\/span><\/span> more rain which can also result in flowers coming into bloom and more colorful landscapes<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>June through November is <\/span><\/span>slightly<\/span><\/span> cooler and sea currents change, bringing nutrient rich water and attracting marine life<\/span><\/span>. The seas will be rougher and the skies cloudier, but divers prefer this time of the year. <\/span>Besides the weather and its effects on the wildlife, the other important thing to note about when to visit is the peak seasons for tourism<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>From mid-June into September and again in late December to mid-January, the islands see many tourists and it\u2019s important to book well in advance to ensure tours and accommodation<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Cruises vs. independent island-based visits
\n<\/strong><\/span>Galapagos cruises <\/a>are a very effective way to see many of the islands, including harder to reach ones. <\/span>On these cruises, you visit different islands during the day and sail to a new destination overnight, thus maximizing your daytime adventures<\/span><\/span>. However, the price tag can be upwards of <\/span>$8,000 for a 7-day excursion.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Alternatively<\/span><\/span>, you can base yourself on land and take day trips to the different remote islands<\/span><\/span>. This is generally a more cost-effective way to see the Galapagos. <\/span>However<\/span><\/span>, it can be difficult to reach the more remote islands. Popular places to choose a base are Santa Cruz, San Cristobal and Isabela. From here you can hire guides to take you on day trips or multi-day packages or excursions. Be sure to hire a company that has proper permits and licensed guides.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Choosing which islands to visit<\/strong>
\n<\/span>Some islands and sites <\/span><\/span>are known<\/span><\/span> for their special wildlife and landscapes, which should <\/span><\/span>be included<\/span><\/span> on your Galapagos itinerary<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>However<\/span><\/span>, many of the islands are home to sea lions, marine iguanas, and many of the famous bird species so you\u2019ll <\/span><\/span>easily<\/span><\/span> encounter them<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>Below is a breakdown of some of the more popular islands and what to expect to see on each (listed <\/span><\/span>Alphabetically<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>

Most popular for its rugged black volcanic landscapes and <\/span>oddly<\/span><\/span> shaped pinnacle rock. It\u2019s also possible to spot Gal\u00e1pagos penguins while in the waters around the island.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The youngest island in the Galapagos, Fernandina is a tourist favorite due to its incredible wildlife opportunities<\/span><\/span> and<\/span> it’s home to the largest population of marine iguanas and also the flightless cormorants<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Floreana<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>In contrast to the other islands, <\/span><\/span>possibly<\/span><\/span> the most interesting thing you\u2019ll find here is the human history<\/span><\/span>. Floreana was the first of the Galapagos to <\/span>be inhabited<\/span><\/span> and <\/span>is steeped<\/span><\/span> with old sailor lore. A boat <\/span>is said<\/span><\/span> to only visit this island once every two weeks. If you happen to make it here, stop by the old post office dating back to 1793. <\/span>If you\u2019re into traditions, grab a postcard from the barrel and carry it back home to deliver it as has <\/span><\/span>been done<\/span><\/span> here since the time of the whalers. Leave one, too,, and see if it ever makes it back to you<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Genovesa
\n<\/strong>The long voyage and rough seas keep most tourists away from Genovesa. Generally, only the week-long sailings will make the trip here. Those that come will see fantastic wildlife and unique geography. <\/span>After a hike up the large rock wall formation known as Prince Phillip\u2019s Steps, you\u2019ll find many of the famous birds of the Galapagos<\/span><\/span>. A common sight here is the frigate birds who puff their red necks as part of a mating ritual. <\/span>On Genovesa you shouldn\u2019t have trouble spotting masked boobies, and the island is home to the largest population of red-footed boobies<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Isabe
\n<\/strong>The largest island in the Gal\u00e1pagos has many unique features and inhabitants. <\/span>Among the most popular are Darwin\u2019s lake surrounded by impressive volcanic hills and the <\/span><\/span>aptly<\/span><\/span> named Flamingo Pond<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>The large size of the island allows for a large number of species to <\/span><\/span>be seen<\/span><\/span> here making it a popular destination for day trippers<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Santa Cruz
\n<\/strong><\/span>Most tours will either start or end here and it\u2019s also a popular base for independent travelers. The main town, Puerto Ayora, is among the largest on the islands. <\/span>In addition<\/span><\/span> to being a transport hub, there’s also the Charles Darwin Research Station<\/span><\/span>. On the site of the research station, you\u2019ll get a chance to get very close to a handful of giant tortoises. Also not far away are \u201cThe Twins,\u201d side by side sinkholes which are part of most tours on the island. <\/span>Finally on the northern end of the island is Cerro Dragon, or Dragon Hill, a prominent rock formation and also a great place to see the colorful land iguanas<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>

Another main hub for travelers is San Crist\u00f3bal where many tours start or end and popular place for land based visits<\/span><\/span>. On the island, there is a giant tortoise reserve, a small museum, and nice waterfront port. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Santiago<\/strong>
\n<\/span>The main draw to Santiago is that it\u2019s home to the largest population of endemic sea lions of the Galapagos, the Galapagos fur seal<\/span><\/span>. Most other islands have <\/span>primarily<\/span><\/span> California sea lions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Wolf Island and Darwin Island<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In the far northwest lie a small cluster of islands including Darwin and Wolf islands. These are among the least visited due to their distance from the rest of the archipelago. Those that make the journey are rewarded with <\/span>truly<\/span><\/span> unique wildlife experiences. The islands are also the favorite of many divers. <\/span>The waters around these islands <\/span><\/span>are known<\/span><\/span> for the <\/span><\/span>abundance<\/span><\/span> of sharks, especially schools of hammerhead sharks<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>However<\/span><\/span>, if you\u2019re not a diver the only draw would be Darwin\u2019s Arch, a stone arch rock formation, since there are no land visiting sites on these islands<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
