{"id":598,"date":"2009-07-01T09:38:23","date_gmt":"2009-07-01T14:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/?p=598"},"modified":"2016-12-17T03:43:05","modified_gmt":"2016-12-17T09:43:05","slug":"review-of-in-flight-wi-fi-from-a-first-timer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/review-of-in-flight-wi-fi-from-a-first-timer\/","title":{"rendered":"Review of in-flight Wi-Fi from a first-timer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_599\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/dl1935map.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-599\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-599\" title=\"dl1935map\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/dl1935map-300x255.png\" alt=\"I am here\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I am here<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>By John Banta<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m off to visit my wifeand in-laws in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/hotels\/United_States--NC\/Wilmington\/\">Wilmington, NC<\/a> for the July 4th weekend and decided to try something new.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m writing this post from 30,000 feet aboard Delta Air Lines flight 1935 en route to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/Atlanta-Hotels.d178232.Travel-Guide-Hotels\">Atlanta<\/a> and must say, I am pretty impressed with the in-flight Internet access I am just now checking out for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>After a quick registration process on a sign-up page and charging $9.95 to my credit card, I am now online for the duration of the flight.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As far as the service, it has worked very well for me. Since shortly after takeoff, I have successfully:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>checked work email,<\/li>\n<li>checked the flight status to grab the image you see here,<\/li>\n<li>sent an SMS message to my wife using the very cool <a href=\"http:\/\/google.com\/voice\">Google Voice<\/a>, and<\/li>\n<li>written this post &#8211; all without any issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the business traveler, this seems like a definite plus to keep up with the office while between airports.<\/p>\n<p>For leisure travelers, this service may seem a bit pricey, especially if you&#8217;re traveling on a multi-leg itinerary as you would need to pay the $9.95 for each flight, or buy a $49 package for 30 days (which would seem to pay off if you have a few trips coming up, all on the same Wi-Fi-enabled carrier.)<\/p>\n<p>To test out the download speeds, I logged into iTunes and bought the new Killers album and was quite pleased with the time needed to complete the download &#8212; it was pretty snappy and not that much slower than a broadband connection you might have at home. (For the technical folks, I was getting approximately 200kb\/second).<\/p>\n<p>Upload speed was noticeably slower as it took nearly a minute to upload the map (about 800k).\u00a0 For most Wi-Fi fliers I wouldn&#8217;t expect this to be an issue though unless you&#8217;re uploading photos from your trip on the flight home, which\u00a0I don&#8217;t think I would recommend.<\/p>\n<p>Well, we&#8217;re nearing Atlanta so I need to go but Happy Travels.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pixel.newscred.com\/px.gif?key=YXJ0aWNsZT02Yzg0YmI2NDZjYWUyNmE4MDcyZTJlNDQ1YzM4ZjU4OQ==\" alt=\"\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" class=\"nc_pixel\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In-flight internet access is becoming more common these days on several major carriers.
