Planning a tropical getaway\u00a0to Punta Cana<\/a>? Lucky you. Over the past few\u00a0decades,\u00a0the coastal region on the easternmost side of\u00a0the Dominican Republic has transformed from barren cattle\u00a0farmland into massive\u00a0tourist destination, thanks to year-round 80-degree\u00a0weather, palm-fringed beaches, crystal-clear waters and lavish resorts. Given Punta Cana’s\u00a0popularity\u2014and the all-inclusive nature of such resorts\u2014you\u00a0might\u00a0reasonably assume that upon booking accommodations, the details of your trip\u00a0will be all sorted out… Food! Drinks! Beach chairs in full recline! Our advice, however\u2014and this applies to\u00a0any type\u00a0of travel\u2014is to go prepared. Ask questions ahead\u00a0of time, do your research and you’ll be better able to enjoy yourself in the DR. Here are some tips to help you make\u00a0the most of your\u00a0Caribbean vacation:<\/p>\n

1. All-inclusive resorts aren’t all created equal<\/h3>\n

Do you want to unwind in a place that’s\u00a0family-oriented? Just for adults? A “sprang break<\/a>!”\u2013style hotspot?\u00a0Or a laid-back escape? For better or worse, most of the action in Punta Cana happens at resorts, so it’s important that you like where you’re staying. The atmosphere of the area’s\u00a0beach properties runs the gamut including family-friendly Memories Splash Resort and Spa<\/a>, home to the Caribbean’s largest water park, and Dreams Punta Cana Resort and Spa<\/a>, offering\u00a0a kid-centric Explorer’s Club; something-for-everyone spots like the sprawling\u00a0Hard Rock Hotel and Casino<\/a>\u2014with a\u00a0brand new\u00a0adventure sports facility, Camp Woodward, opening in\u00a02017; and adults-only destinations\u00a0such as\u00a0Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana<\/a>\u00a0and Excellence Punta Cana<\/a>. Research the vibe of the resort before you book, and don’t be afraid to ask questions about what’s actually meant by\u00a0“all-inclusive.” Some will\u00a0charge extra for things like\u00a0spa treatments, sports lessons, equipment rental and premium-brand liquor.<\/p>\n

2. U.S. currency is okay<\/h3>\n

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (DOP), but U.S. dollars areaccepted at most tourist spots. Credit cards are fine, too. Unless you plan on\u00a0doing some\u00a0off-resort shopping or dining, or venturing into\u00a0non-touristy areas, you shouldn’t need to\u00a0convert your dollars to pesos. Just be sure to bring some smaller bills\u2014some people\u00a0recommend up to $100 in one-dollar bills, though we think $50 in ones is\u00a0fine\u2014because they\u00a0can be difficult\u00a0to obtain once you’re in the DR. Plus, small bills are convenient\u00a0for tipping.<\/p>\n

3. Bring an Alexander Hamilton\u00a0to the airport<\/h3>\n

Speaking of cash, make sure you have at least $10 on you when you land in Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). After you’ve deplaned and before entering customs, tourists are required to pay\u00a0a cash-only visitor fee\u00a0(U.S. dollars are\u00a0accepted)\u00a0to a bouncer\u2014er, we mean immigration officer. Indeed,\u00a0the “tourist card”\u00a0feels a little\u00a0like paying\u00a0a cover to get into an exclusive\u00a0nightclub known as\u00a0Punta Cana. We half expected a velvet rope!<\/p>\n

4. Arrange ground transportation ahead of time<\/h3>\n

Most\u00a0resorts are located about 30 minutes to an hour away from PUJ. The easiest way to avoid the stress of figuring out\u00a0transportation after\u00a0landing there is to prearrange it\u00a0(unless, of course, you’re\u00a0traveling with a tour company\u00a0that has done that for you). Book your airport transfer online, so that when you arrive in Punta Cana, you can walk\u00a0straight out to meet your driver, who will be waiting outside with a sign. Taxis, with preset rates to the various resorts, are also available outside the airport and safe to use. Just\u00a0avoid the\u00a0several other\u00a0competing drivers who will\u00a0try to stop you along the way and\u00a0convince you to use their own transportation services.<\/p>\n

5. If experiencing Dominican food is a top priority, plan ahead<\/h3>\n

Yes, you’re in the Dominican Republic. But the truth is,\u00a0it’s going to be\u00a0difficult to experience the local cuisine\u2014a mix of Spanish, indigenous Ta\u00edno and African influences\u2014from within your resort, where you’re more likely to run into takes on Asian, French, Italian or\u00a0American fare. There are exceptions, however. Some resort\u00a0buffets include Dominican dishes such as rice and beans, mang\u00fa<\/em> (mashed plantains)\u00a0and sancocho de siete carne<\/em> (seven-meat stew). And some destinations, such as\u00a0the recently opened\u00a0Excellence El Carmen<\/a>, feature a\u00a0weekly Dominican night on the beach. Here, guests are introduced to\u00a0local flavors\u2014roast suckling pig,\u00a0tostones<\/em> (fried plantains), tropical fruits and so on\u2014and\u00a0enjoy entertainment\u00a0in the form of traditional music and dancing.<\/p>\n

6. Try a shot of\u00a0Mama Juana<\/h3>\n

One aspect of Dominican culture you’re guaranteed to encounter, on resort or off: Mama Juana. A mixture of\u00a0rum, red wine and honey soaked in a bottle with a combination of twigs, bark, leaves and herbs, the drink is served at room temperature and is similar in taste to port or amaro. It’s also said to contain all\u00a0sorts of curative properties\u2014an aphrodisiac, if you will. Try a shot (or two) and see for yourself.<\/p>\n

7. Adjust to\u00a0“island time”<\/h3>\n

This seems true of anywhere you go in the Caribbean, but the Dominican Republic really does\u00a0operate at a calmer, slower\u00a0pace. Meals, traffic, service, conversation…none of it feels as rushed as in the States. Perhaps the most effective way to enjoy\u00a0your Punta Cana vacation is to forget about the clock\u00a0or the need to maintain any kind of rigid schedule and simply relax into island time yourself.<\/p>\n

The aforementioned\u00a0Excellence El Carmen<\/a>, an adults-only all-inclusive resort on the white-sand beaches of Uvero Alto, opened in 2016 and sets itself apart with its clean, contemporary design\u2014think marble floors, stunning\u00a0light fixtures, low-slung coffee tables\u00a0stacked with design-centric tomes\u2014and a truly\u00a0outstanding\u00a0approach to\u00a0service. The 492-room resort offers\u00a0an array of\u00a0suite options, all of which highlight an ocean or pool view and come with an in-room Jacuzzi for two (perhaps our favorite feature). Be sure to visit the Mill\u00e9 Spa, with views of the Dominican mountains, for a massage or aqua wellness\u00a0treatment.
