2. Wild horses<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Horses could easily be the island mascot of Vieques. Hundreds of equines roam the island, some wild, others owned by locals and branded on their hips. Whether they have an official home or not, the animals mingle together and graze along the roads and in open fields. The food on Vieques is as tasty, authentic and flavorful as you could imagine. Puerto Rican favorites like mofongo and Caribbean delicacies like spiny lobster come together in delicious harmony. 5.\u00a0Off-the-beaten-path gems<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Rent your own 4X4, and you’ll be free to go just about anywhere on the island. Reference the map on occasion, but really, you should venture out on your own and find whatever beach suits you best for the day. The more thrilling the off-road path you choose, the more secluded and rewarding the beach will be at the end. Part of the allure of Vieques is that you get to venture out solo;\u00a0there are no parking lots or commercialization along these beaches.\u00a0It’s just you and the ocean.<\/p>\n

7. Thrilling puddle-jumper flight<\/strong><\/p>\n

From San Juan, you have two options to get to Vieques. For those with a fear of flying, there’s a ferry service that takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour port to port. The faster\u00a0way to arrive on the island is by prop plane. The 10-seater Cessnas (by Cape Air) will have you over there in 15 minutes. Think of it as an air taxi, where\u00a0pilots make the trip back and forth about\u00a010 times a day. The views from the sky are breathtaking…and landing will certainly\u00a0take your breath away.\u00a0If you’re lucky enough to get the co-pilot seat, you’ll be in the front row as the plane approaches the short, waterfront landing strip.<\/p>\n
