Thank goodness there are\u00a0dozens of folk art environments and public art installations that we can visit when we prefer our art to be a little rougher around the edges, to have been created out of a compulsion that borders on obsession and to be at least a dozen miles from the nearest Starbucks. When it failed to fly, he went into the desert and, over the course of another couple of decades, built a sprawling adobe mountain 85 miles southeast of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/Palm-Springs-Hotels.d180676.Travel-Guide-Hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palm Springs<\/a> that he covered with religious messages\u2014and an estimated 100,000 gallons of paint. Rodia, an Italian immigrant, spent 33 years constructing the towers out of steel rebar, concrete and wire, and covering them with a mosaic of broken glass and pottery. Elmer\u2019s Bottle Tree Ranch: Oro Grande, CA:<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s no shortage of quirky stops along Route 66, but there\u2019s only one Bottle Tree Ranch. Located outside 95 miles northeast of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/Oro-Grande-Hotels.d3000428446.Travel-Guide-Hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles<\/a>, Elmer Long\u2019s property is covered with more than 200 bottle trees\u2014large scrap metal poles decorated with empty glass bottles\u2014and each one of them is different. Cano\u2019s Castle: Antonito, CO<\/h3>\n<p>When Dominic \u201cCano\u201d Espinoza was deployed during the Vietnam War, he became fascinated with the country&#8217;s Buddhist temples. Several decades after returning\u00a0home, he started construction on his own mostly-aluminum homage in a small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/Denver-Hotels.d178254.Travel-Guide-Hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado<\/a> town. Spoiler alert: It didn\u2019t work. For the next 25 years, he did just that in this town 90 miles northwest of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/Atlanta-Hotels.d178232.Travel-Guide-Hotels\">Atlanta<\/a>, painting almost 50,000 numbered works. Finster\u2014whose art you might recognize from R.E.M. and Talking Heads album covers\u2014collected these and thousands of other folk art-ifacts in his Paradise Garden. Both of them contributed some of their own work to the collection, while more than 40 other artists are represented behind their modest (but decorative) chain link fence. Dinsmoor\u2019s Garden of Eden<\/a>:\u00a0Lucas, KS<\/h3>\n<p>Samuel Perry Dinsmoor was a Civil War veteran and a sculptorwho dedicated most of his life to creating concrete versions of his own religious and populist beliefs. The resulting works were collected and displayed at his log cabin (which he also built) two hours north of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/Wichita-Hotels.d6058350.Travel-Guide-Hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wichita<\/a> and named the Garden of Eden. After touring the site and seeing his towering Biblical creations, you can stop by to see Dinsmoor himself: He\u2019s buried in a mausoleum on the site.<\/p>\n<p><a
