Many Angelenos are aware of the\u00a0Self-Realization Fellowship’s Lake Shrine\u00a0in\u00a0Pacific Palisades, a calming\u00a0oasis not far from the ocean and featuring 10\u00a0acres of lush gardens surrounding\u00a0a spring-fed lake. Fewer know that the worldwide\u00a0spiritual organization also maintains lovely grounds\u00a0on the east side of the city at the\u00a0SRF International Headquarters on Mt. Washington. The goal of the Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Garden, a nonprofit spiritual center in the West Adams District, is to help people enjoy nature,\u00a0“unwind the mind”\u00a0and harness inner calm\u2014all without having to leave the city. Amir’s Garden, tucked away in\u00a0Griffith Park, is a labor of love. Designed as a rest stop for hikers and equestrians, the five-acre ornamental\u00a0garden has been maintained\u00a0by volunteers since 1971. Back then, a major brush fire ravaged the area, and\u00a0a local hiker named Amir stepped in to not only restore the landscape\u00a0but also create something lastingly beautiful. Pine trees and jacaranda lend shade, while oleander, yucca, geraniums and rose bushes flank picnic tables.\u00a0Amir’s Garden is located about a half mile hike up the main fire road trail from the\u00a0Mineral Wells Picnic Area parking lot.
