So how can he make sure that their time away together stays fun and avoids frustration? We\u2019ve asked leading male travelers for their advice on how to plan a trip that eliminates\u00a0any chance of headaches or heartbreak. Here\u2019s what they told us:<\/p>\n

Look at how much time you\u2019ve already spent together<\/h3>\n

Before getting excited about going out of town, consider how many moments you\u2019ve shared as a couple close to home first. \u201cYou need to consider how much time you’ve spent with her already,\u201d says Lee Abbamonte, the youngest American to visit every country in the world. \u201cThere’s a big difference between going on a few dates and spending 24\/7 with someone.\u201d Matt Meltzer, a travel staff writer for Thrillist<\/em>, also points out that it\u2019s one thing to spend the night together, \u201cbut how people are on mornings, when they don\u2019t have to go to work, says a lot about how compatible you\u2019ll be on vacation.\u201d Not sure? Perhaps plan a staycation first.<\/p>\n

See how your personalities blend<\/h3>\n

Keep in mind that how you get along locally could turn out to be much different on the road. Michael Hudson, founder of Go, See, Write<\/em>, recommends comparing your Sig O\u2019s personality traits to yours and seeing what gels. \u201cI’d look into whether or not she’s a planner or a more \u2018go with the flow\u2019 person,\u201d he says. \u201cTake her sleeping habits into consideration, and see if [you] have the same nightlife expectations,\u201d he adds. Plus weigh other factors such as \u201cany dietary restrictions and \u2026 any fears like heights before planning activities,\u201d suggests travel expert Johnny Jet.<\/p>\n

Go short on time and distance<\/h3>\n

A shorter vacation, as in a weekend, can have a long-lasting impact on romance. Consider a getaway that\u2019s not too far from your home base, with a number of indoor and\/or outdoor attractions. Also, go for lodging that gives you both a fair amount of space like a suite arrangement. \u201cDepending on each other\u2019s personality, I would recommend a cool, quaint place in a city or a busy inn with a lot of room in the country,\u201d says travel expert Charles McCool. For ideas, Will Tang of Go Awesome Places<\/em> suggests an all-inclusive vacation \u201cbecause it\u2019s relaxing, stress-free, and easy to plan. Alternatively, a long weekend city trip would also be a great option.\u201d<\/p>\n

Get an itinerary started<\/h3>\n

Discuss what ideas you have in mind about what you\u2019re both itching to do ahead of time. \u201cTalk before you go about what she wants to do while you\u2019re there, and see if it aligns with your interests,\u201d says Meltzer. And don\u2019t forget to factor in meal times. \u201cNot every meal has to be at a restaurant, but I can\u2019t tell you how much time I\u2019ve wasted on vacation figuring out where to eat,\u201d adds Meltzer. Leave yourselves some flex time, too. \u201cWhether you or she wants to watch Games of Thrones<\/em>, needs to check in with the office or wants to do a solo run or Soul Cycle, allow it to happen,\u201d says McCool.<\/p>\n

Be frank about your finances<\/h3>\n

Yes, money can be an argumentative subject, but it\u2019s one to be discussed. \u201cThis all depends on the people involved,of course, but for me personally, I like to pay for things but you also don’t want to be pushy,\u201d says Abbamonte.\u00a0\u201cMaybe agree that she will pay for her ticket and you get the rest.\u201d Or perhaps divvy up costs, where maybe \u201cone person could pay for lodging and the other takes care of meals and gas,\u201d says McCool. For tracking larger cost items like hotels, gas, and rental cars, Tang suggests using personal finance programs (Venmo or SplitWise are good examples).<\/p>\n

Remain open to a compromise<\/h3>\n

She wants to go exploring, while you prefer lounging. You\u2019re interested in doing certain things, but she isn\u2019t, and vice versa. In the beginning of your union, and during your trip, it\u2019s best to be willing to find common ground. \u201cYou cannot be demanding, and neither can she, especially this early in a relationship,\u201d says Abbamonte. \u201cBe clear on what’s important to you and be accommodating to what’s important to her!\u201d Or, plainly as Hudson explains, do these activities together anyway.<\/p>\n

Fight fair<\/h3>\n

Unfortunately a va-cay fight could be possible, yet how you both handle it counts more. If it\u2019s over a small matter like lateness, \u201cmake sure it doesn\u2019t spiral into something personal or large scale,\u201d advises Meltzer. If it\u2019s major, Meltzer recommends trying to put differences aside for the remainder of the trip and discuss your relationship status when you\u2019re back home.\u00a0If your debates continue to escalate, Hodson advises to \u201ctake a break from each other, try to have a calm conversation and see what you can work out together.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Learn from each other<\/h3>\n

One takeaway fromyour trip is not just discovering more about your partner, but also teaching each other a thing or two. When Jet first traveled with his now-wife, Natalie DiScala, he remembers her looking \u201clike a 1920s transatlantic passenger with the size of her trunk. I had to put on the brakes and show her the light. Now, Natalie packs lighter than I do, and when I suggest she should check a bag for one of our round-the-world trips, she looks at me like I\u2019m crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n
