Sure, the iPhone<\/strong><\/a> is a hip phone. But I think it truly shines as a travel<\/a><\/strong> tool when you take it on the road.<\/p>\n

Watching movies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Watching movies on the iPhone<\/strong><\/a><\/strong> is always fab, but when you’re waiting at the airport because your flight is delayed, it’s a lifesaver. Now that iTunes<\/strong><\/a> rents movies, getting films onto the iPhone is as simple as getting a song or podcast on an iPod<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Getting up-to-date travel information<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can use Safari<\/strong> to connect to Orbitz’ Mobile Access<\/a><\/strong> to check your flight status, get up-to-the-minute information about flight delays<\/a><\/strong> and also get news and tips about security wait times and more from other travelers.<\/p>\n

Wayfinding<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Google Maps<\/strong><\/a> feature is far more than a location pin-pointer. Its
\nintegration with the address book and Safari browser make it a powerful
\ntravel<\/a> <\/strong>tool. Type in an address (e.g. “300 Elm Street”) or a proper name
\n(“Disney World<\/a><\/strong>“). Once the spot comes up on the map, tap on it and
\ncontact info including url, phone number, and address automatically
\nappears.<\/p>\n

Better still, with one more click, you can get directions to or from the location,
\nadd it to your bookmarks, or make it a contact in your phone book.<\/p>\n

I think it works wonderfully in reverse as well. Click the address of a friend
\nin your contact list, and it automaticallymaps their location, from
\nwhich you can get directions to or from their location.<\/p>\n

\nEarthcomber<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

At first glance, I thought Earthcomber<\/strong> was just a neat little way to find
\nplaces close to me: restaurants, hotels<\/a><\/strong>, spas. But
\nif you sign up and get your other iPhone<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/strong>-toting friends and relatives to do
\nso, you get this amazing real-time alarm that alerts you when one
\nof your “peeps” is in your vicinity.<\/p>\n

Here are three of my favorite tools to make travel<\/a><\/strong> easier:<\/p>\n

iGas<\/a> for cheap gas<\/strong><\/p>\n

Type in your ZIP code and it returns a list of places to fill up priced lowest to highest.<\/p>\n


\nTranslation<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

This simple utility covers simple phrases needed to navigate common international travel<\/a><\/strong>
\nsituations in six languages. My favorite: “Where is a cheap meal?”<\/p>\n

\nCurrency conversion<\/strong><\/p>\n

It turnsout that the iPhone<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/strong>‘s stock feature also works great as a currency
\nconverter. You just input the currency conversion into a formula and get
\nthe most up-to-date value. The formula is ND=X, where N is the
\ninternational code for your currency and D is the desired currency
\ncode.
