Gone fishing. The words\u2014historically scrawled on a shingle nailed outside a workplace\u2014conjure images of the outdoors, good friends, a clear mind and, occasionally, a fish or two. A good day of angling can take you there, as President of Orbitz for Business Frank Petito knows. Here, the avid fly fisherman offers some friendly advice for anyone planning a fishing trip<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

1. <\/strong>The ideal number for a group fishing trip is two.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTwo is a great number for a trip as it enables good conversation and bonding, especially if it\u2019s taking a trip with my son or a great friend and we get to chat in the car, in a boat, on a river and tell stories afterwards. One is also a good number: My favorite day of the year to fish is the Friday after Thanksgiving when I drive to Wisconsin to a local river. I usually do it by myself, and it\u2019s just a fun time to reflect on the year, and chill out.”<\/p>\n

2. The ideal number for a group fishing trip is everyone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOn the other extreme is a great trip with a bunch of friends. And I have found that the more people, the less important the fishing and the more important the tomfoolery. The logistical challenge is greater, but if I\u2019m going on a really special trip, I\u2019d like to share the experience with as many people as possible. For the last 18 years, I\u2019ve gone on an annual weekend trip with 10 grad school buddies. We\u2019ve been all over the country but the things I remember most are the post-fishing jocularity, more so than the fishing itself\u2014although we\u2019ve had some great fishing adventures.”<\/p>\n

Make sure your gear is good to go.<\/p><\/div>\n

3. Gear up\u2014one accessory can make all the difference.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOf course you need the right fishing rod, reel, flies etc.\u2014and it\u2019s critical to have the appropriate beverages. But the one piece of gear that I view as critical is a good pair of polarized sunglasses. They can help you cut through the water\u2019s glare and actually see what\u2019s going on under the surface. I can always borrow a fishing rod if I need to, but if I leave without my prescription sunglasses I\u2019m not a happy person.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. <\/strong>Don\u2019t ignore what\u2019s in your backyard. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had the great pleasure of going to a lot of different places, whether it\u2019s the Rocky Mountains, Alaska or Argentina, where I lived for two years. All are great spots, but the fishing around the Great Lakes is tremendous. My recent obsession has been fishing for salmon on Lake Michigan, and there are many rivers within a four-hour drive of Chicago<\/a> where you\u2019ll catch bigger trout than you can in Alaska. I\u2019m amazed at how many people in Chicago will travel great distances and ignore what\u2019s in their backyards.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Find your own secret spot.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFind a secret spot that you really love. It\u2019s kind of like surfing in that crowds really detract from the experience. While it\u2019s hardly secret, in the late fall I really enjoy going to the Milwaukee River in downtown Milwaukee. If the weather is really squirrely and I get there early enough, I can have stretches of the river all to myself. While it\u2019s hardly remote, I consider that to be my secret local spot. Just don\u2019t tell anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
