Allow for at least a few hours to peruse the museum, which is itself an architectural phenomena; it&#8217;s the only museum\u00a0in the world housed over an\u00a0active archeological excavation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35828\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/kristasimmons_melissinossandals.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/kristasimmons_melissinossandals.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/kristasimmons_melissinossandals-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/kristasimmons_melissinossandals-400x600.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That same spirit of artistry that inspired the ancient craftsmen at the Parthenon lives on at<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/melissinos-art.com\/eng\/sandals.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melissino&#8217;s<\/a>,<\/strong> a sandal maker that&#8217;s been open since 1920. It&#8217;s a steal to find custom leather work done so well at affordable prices (<span class=\"st\">\u20ac<\/span>35\/pair), so I picked two designs from one of 27 styles, and had my\u00a0shoe&#8217;s leather worked to the dimensions of\u00a0my\u00a0feet. There are gyro shops and tavernas galore (for a traditional version of the latter with great seafood and traditional Greek comfort dishes, I&#8217;d recommend <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/arsenistavern.gr\/\">Taverna Arsenis<\/a><\/strong>) but I stopped for a savory koulourakia, a butter-based pastry stuffed with shaved ham and cheese, at a small street stall near <strong>Kapnikarea church<\/strong>. (The chocolate version also looked pretty tempting, especially at only <span class=\"st\">\u20ac<\/span>2.) Just walking around Plaka you&#8217;ll see that every shop has at least a handful of chairs facing the street for people watching and socializing. (You can check out this handy list of the city&#8217;s best cafes <a href=\"http:\/\/athensguide.com\/cafes\/index.html\">here<\/a>.) And to top that all off, they have one of the coolest rooftop restaurants around. At <strong>Premiere,<\/strong> open Tuesday through Sunday, you can get sweeping\u00a0cityscape views of the Acropolis during the summer and upscale, modernized Greek cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>If you are in fact going to take a flight instead of going by sea, staying at the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sofitel.com\/gb\/booking\/hotels-list.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sofitel<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>across the street from the Athens airport is a breeze. If you choose to fly, smaller airlines like<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.aegeanair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aegean<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0offer affordable rates, as well. The cheapest and most effective way to get around Athens is the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ametro.gr\/page\/default.asp?id=48&amp;la=2\">Attiko Metro<\/a> <\/strong>subway, but if you&#8217;re budgeted on time and want to take a taxi, be sure to ask for a metered driver.
