Even as spring approaches, it seems like the country is still one big sheet of ice. But in Florida, it almost feels like summertime… and the living — and driving\u2014are easy. If you’re heading South to thaw out, don’t miss these scenic drives.\u00a0No rock salt required.<\/p>\n

\"overseas<\/p>\n

1) Overseas Highway:<\/h3>\n

You could fly from Miami<\/a> to Key West<\/a>. But then you’d miss one of the most spectacular road trips of your life.\u00a0The southernmost leg of U.S. Route 1 spans the length of the Florida Keys<\/a>, offering a dazzling buffet of tropical landscapes, cotton candy skies and water in every imaginable shade of blue and green.\u00a0The approximately 130-mile Overseas Highway<\/a>\u00a0is nicknamed the “magic carpet,” and the journey will indeed leave you spellbound.<\/p>\n

2) Canopy roads<\/h3>\n

Florida is generally flat, but\u00a0Tallahassee\u00a0<\/a>boasts some serene rolling hills. Making a drive through the state capital even more peaceful\u00a0are the area’s\u00a0canopy roads<\/a> — passageways shaded by moss-draped pines, live oaks and other greenery. Tally has nine officially named canopy roads totaling about 78 miles, but you’ll find plenty more unofficial ones that are equally charming.<\/p>\n

3) Horse country<\/h3>\n

Even if you drive a compact car, you’ll feel like you’re in a pickup truck commercial when you cruise through Florida’s horse country<\/a>.\u00a0As\u00a0you ramble through the idyllic\u00a0Ocala<\/a>\/Marion County<\/a> area, about\u00a040 miles south of Gainesville<\/a>, roll down your windows to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the roadside pastures. These oak-shaded roads are home\u00a0to more than\u00a0600 thoroughbred breeding farms, many of which offer tours.<\/p>\n

\"Scenic<\/p>\n

4) Scenic A1A<\/h3>\n

Highway A1Astretches down Florida’s entire east coast, parallel to the Atlantic Ocean, and the entire\u00a0journey is pretty easy on the eyes. (There’s a reason why Vanilla Ice gave a shoutout<\/a> to “A1A Beachfront Avenue!” in Ice Ice Baby<\/em>). But the\u00a0A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway<\/a>, which winds 72 miles from Ponte Vedra Beach<\/a> down to\u00a0area down to Flagler Beach<\/a>, is\u00a0particularly\u00a0pleasant. The mostly two-lane passes through historic\u00a0St. Augustine<\/a>, connecting some of America’s most cherished national monuments, nature preserves\u00a0and beaches.<\/p>\n

\"Macarthur<\/p>\n

5) Macarthur Causeway<\/h3>\n

Miami<\/a> traffic can be brutal. But if you’ve gotta be stuck in gridlock, let’s hope it’s on the MacArthur Causeway Bridge<\/a>. One of the city’s busiest overpasses, it traverses Biscayne Bay to connect the\u00a0mainland to\u00a0Miami Beach<\/a>, while offering commuters eye candy in the form of a glittering cityscape. Already a South Florida icon, the causeway has gained international attention in\u00a0the film The Birdcage<\/em>, the TV series Burn Notice<\/em>, the opening sequence to home games and a Dr Pepper commercial starring rapper Pitbull.<\/p>\n
