1) Tacos are not a breakfast food.<\/strong>
\nFact: You can\u2019t actually survive a day in Austin<\/a>, Texas, if you don\u2019t start with the most important taco of the day<\/a>. Breakfast tacos fuel the city, and endlessly arguing about where to get them is critical. Tacodeli? Veracruz All Natural? Enchiladas y Mas, Tamale House East? Congrats, everyone wins. And never call them \u201cbreakfast burritos.\u201d You\u2019re not at a Utah McDonald\u2019s.

\n2) Let\u2019s go see a movie at the multiplex at the mall.<\/strong>
\nNever. Alamo Drafthouse<\/a> will sell you a bucket of beer, a pizza and a milkshake with whiskey in it. They\u2019ll bring it to your seat. And they\u2019ll throw out the guy who\u2019s texting next to you. They are heroes.<\/p>\n

3) Stop complaining about traffic, it’s way worse in [anywhere].<\/strong>
\nNope. Traffic is terrible here<\/a>, and it\u2019s only getting worse. We\u2019re the fastest-growing city in the U.S.<\/a> for the fourth consecutive year. We can\u2019t pass a rail transit bill\u2014in 2000<\/a> or 2014<\/a>. While it\u2019s possible all those new Austinites will learn the bus routes, odds are better they\u2019ll end up in front of you, parked on Mopac.<\/p>\n

4) BBQ is better in other cities.<\/strong>
\nNot a chance. Austin<\/a> is home to the best barbecue on the planet. And it\u2019s only getting better. Stiles Switch is chicken-frying<\/a> its beef ribs, Blue Ox<\/a> is throwing pancake and brisket brunch. Legendary Hill Country institutions like Black\u2019s<\/a> (Lockhart) and Cooper\u2019s <\/a>(Llano) have set up shop inside city limits. We\u2019re too sleepy from gorging on brisket to even mention Franklin, John Mueller, Micklethwait or La Barbecue.<\/p>\n

5) Austin’s summer weather is fine! Let\u2019s stand around in the sun.<\/strong>
\nSweat trickles down your face and pools in your beard. You\u2019ve ruined all The Sword<\/a> t-shirts that you jog in. Your Hops and Grain IPA steams out of its aluminum can. Your scalp is sunburned. You look at the calendar. It is May.<\/p>\n

6) It\u2019s too hot to do anything outside.<\/strong>
\nEven when it\u2019s 110 degrees, Austin still flocks to Barton Springs and other beloved swimming holes. The hike-and-bike trails stay crowded on sweltering weekends. Grab the sunscreen and hydrate like you\u2019re an astronaut. You\u2019ll be fine.<\/p>\n

7) Please come see my band tomorrow night! <\/strong>
\nWe\u2019re busy tomorrow, we told our roommate we\u2019d come to his crust punk gig at Red 7. Which we\u2019re doing just after our coworker\u2019s western swing set wraps up at the White Horse. And that\u2019s after our girlfriends\u2019 skee-ball match<\/a> at the Scoot Inn. So…oh, fine, we\u2019ll make it\u2014can we get in on your drink tickets?<\/p>\n

8) I love SXSW, it’s pure Austin!<\/strong>
\nSXSW hosts a fine film festival. It draws thousands of bands into its gravitational pull, and if you\u2019re lucky or disciplined, you will see excellent concerts. It\u2019s also a dystopian marketing hellscape where #brands compete to plumb cynical, new depths. (2014\u2019s winner: Doritos Bold hashtags for the heart with celebrity vomit buzz<\/a>.) The restaurants are overbooked, downtown\u2019s streets are unnavigable, and your aunts keep asking you if you spotted Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas. SXSW\u2019s finest moment: When the last social marketing guru leaves town in an Uber Bentley.<\/p>\n

9) Pardon me, can you help me find Man-CHAKA or Bur-NET or MAHNor?<\/strong>
\nI cannot, my friend. You\u2019re saying those things correctly, which means it\u2019s all wrong. In Austin, it\u2019s safe to assume that every place name should be said weirdly. Throw some Ws into \u201cJollyville\u201d and go ahead and call it 6nd Street.<\/p>\n

\n10) Austin\u2019s<\/a> music scene is overhyped.<\/strong>
\nYour mom is overhyped. Big music festivals like Fun Fun Fun Fest and ACL get the ink, but Austin sustains an ever-expanding constellation of locally grown and locally loved music. There\u2019s no shortage of venues, traditional or otherwise. (Is any other city booking gigs at its grocery stores<\/a>, markets<\/a> or its airport<\/a>?) There is no Music Scene in Austin; there are dozens of them. Don’t believe us? Check out this list.<\/a><\/p>\n

11) Austin\u2019s<\/a> food scene stalls out at tacos and barbecue.<\/strong>
\nOur chef-run restaurants are legit. Paul Qui continues to break hearts as the best chef in the U.S.<\/a> Ramen Tatsuya gets national press, as does Dai Due, Barley Swine, Uchiko, Wink, Foreign and Domestic and many more. Too uptight or expensive? Find one of Qui\u2019s East Side King trucks and order anything.<\/p>\n

12) Willie Nelson is no big deal.<\/strong>
\nTry and say that again, pardner. Say it in front of City Hall, now located on Willie Nelson Blvd. Or in front of the Willie statue<\/a> at ACL Moody Theatre. Or up at Poodie\u2019s<\/a>. Good luck, Slim.<\/p>\n

13) Let\u2019s go to Torchy\u2019s\u2014I\u2019ll have a Trailer Park taco, make it Trashy.<\/strong>
\nTorchy\u2019s Tacos: a great idea, any time of day. But why aren\u2019t you ordering from their secret menu<\/a>? Hillbilly Style is the new Trashy.<\/p>\n

14) Let\u2019s go drinking on Sixth Street!<\/strong>
\nSixth Street, Austin\u2019s infamous college bar gauntlet, will never fade. But barhoppers might also enjoy Rainey Street or the East Side. Cocktail fans should head to North Loop and visit Drink.Well and the Tigress, or seek out Peche\u2019 or Bar Congress downtown. And neighborhood joints all over town serve a growing roster<\/a> of excellent locally-made beers.<\/p>\n
