Orbitz knows vacation\u2014it\u2019s our business. But it\u2019s our pleasure, too. And our jet-fueled passion for travel goes straight to the top, to our adventure-seeking CEO who loves to pick up a board and hit the waves whenever he can. Here, Orbitz frontman Barney Harford<\/a> shares his seven favorite surf spots around the world, in no particular order, plus one secret spot that\u2019s just too good to reveal.<\/p>\n

1. Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing\u2014Maui\u2019s got it all for the adventurous ocean lover. \u201cThe nice thing about Maui<\/a> is that in the morning you could be surfing one beach and enjoying the clean waves of a gentle offshore, and then in the afternoon you can drive around the island to another beach with a strong side shore wind for kitesurfing,\u201d Barney says. \u201cThe breaks around Lahaina<\/a> are very family-friendly, great if you\u2019ve got friends who are new to surfing.\u201d<\/p>\n

2. Tofino, British Columbia, Canada<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

This Pacific spot is known as \u201cCanada\u2019s surfing capital\u201d and it\u2019s no wonder with more than 20 miles of beach break. Water temperatures hover around 50 degrees, but for Barney it\u2019s worth suiting up for\u2014and that means 5mm wetsuit, booties and hoody. \u201cIt\u2019s just an amazingly beautiful area\u2014it\u2019s remote, very wild,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a great place for storm watching; they\u2019ve created a new season around this.\u201d The idea is that winter storm-seekers can gear up and experience the fury of the lashing waves up close, or watch from the warm comfort of a waterfront hotel<\/a> such as the Wickaninnish<\/a>. In milder weather, Barney recommends exploring the elevated walkways that wind through the nearby rainforest.<\/p>\n

3. Indian Beach, Oregon<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Barney recommends this friendly surf spot on the Oregon Coast as a great summer destination for the whole family, though he warns that even then you can expect chilly water. The spot\u2019s part of the verdant Ecola State Park, near the charming towns of Seaside<\/a> and Cannon Beach<\/a> where you\u2019ll find plenty of accommodation options. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful place for the family,\u201d Barney says of Indian Beach. \u201cThere\u2019s a nice cove, well protected, and there’s just a great vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Topanga Point, California<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

When he visits friends in the area, Barney enjoys hitting up Topanga Point<\/a>, a few miles north of Los Angeles. \u201cThat stretch going from Malibu all the way up to Ventura<\/a>\u2014it\u2019s classic,\u201d he says, noting the string of famous surf spots that dot scenic Highway 1. If you go as far as Ventura, where solid points are the big draw, keep an eye out for locally raised surf talents like Timmy Curran, Dane Reynolds and Nick Rozsa.<\/p>\n

Del Mar Beach, California<\/p><\/div>\n

5. Del Mar, California<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

This spot near La Jolla beckons with perfect weather year-round. \u201cWe had an Orbitz partner summit there once and stayed at a great hotel, the <ahref=”http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/psi?force=hotel\/United_States–CA\/Del_Mar\/Villa_L%27Auberge.h867241\/?WT.tsrc=orbitzBlog&GCID=78142″ target=”_blank”>L\u2019Auberge del Mar,\u201d Barney recalls. \u201cDel Mar<\/a> is a charming little town, and there’s a great beach break just down from the hotel\u2014it\u2019s not too crowded and the locals are very friendly.\u201d It’s a great spot for wildlife, too. \u201cYou can often see the seals and dolphins while out surfing,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n

6. Hanalei Bay, Kaua\u02bbi, Hawaii<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

This pristine bay on the north shore of Kaua\u02bbi lures surfers with two miles of beach and spectacular mountain views. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful, beautiful bay,\u201d Barney says. The Orbitz exec says he surfs Hanalei<\/a> to experience the sheer force of nature. \u201cIt\u2019s fantastic, with quite a powerful wave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beach near Ixtapa, Mexico<\/p><\/div>\n

7. La Saladita, Mexico<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

While this Pacific beach near Ixtapa Zihuatenejo<\/a> is famous for its killer left point break, Barney\u2019s best memories of it are, surprisingly, not wave related. \u201cI drove an Orbitz rental car\u2014a Hertz rental car<\/a>\u2014into a ditch trying to find the Ranch [a nearby break],\u201d Barney recalls, fondly. The local Hertz general manager showed up a couple of hours later\u2014on what was a Saturday evening\u2014with his wife, in a mini van, to rescue Barney and the vehicle. \u201cHe\u2019s got a big knife; he\u2019s just cutting away greenery, digging stuff out; he\u2019s got planks,\u201d Barney remembers. \u201cHe gets the car out and says, \u2018OK, enjoy the rest of your trip.\u2019 I think, Wow, this guy\u2019s just amazing!\u201d A call to a fellow exec at Hertz earned the manager unexpected accolades.<\/p>\n

8. Mystery spot, Baja, Mexico<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

This is Barney\u2019s favorite surf spot. It\u2019s in Baja<\/a>, but that\u2019s all he\u2019s willing to say. There aren\u2019t any hotels nearby, so those in the know drive in and camp!<\/p>\n
