You bet, since they\u2019re ingredients in hot drinks around the world. This time of year, that\u2019s a real comfort when you\u2019re traveling to bone-chilling destinations. Then again, there\u2019s something downright soothing about a warm bev anytime.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salep<\/strong> proved popular in the lands of the former Ottoman Turkish Empire. These days, it\u2019s still prevalent throughout <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/travel-guide\/Turkey.tg206\/\">Turkey<\/a>. It\u2019s made using salep flour, from wild orchid tubers. With a flavor akin to liquid rice pudding, it\u2019s often inflected with cinnamon, and it\u2019s believed to be an aphrodisiac so <em>watch out<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get it while it\u2019s hot:<\/strong> Over 1,000 orchid tubers yield just one kilo of salep flour. What\u2019s more, it takes up to eight years for them to grow to size.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where you\u2019ll find it:<\/strong> Hop on a <a href=\"..\/..\/flights\/to-IST\/to-Istanbul\/\">flight to Istanbul<\/a>. Once there, watch for street vendors, who hawk the milky beverage during colder months. Note that you\u2019ll see salep it in other eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dating back to pre-Columbian times, sugary chocolate <strong>atole (champurrado)<\/strong> may be porridge-thick. It may also sport a consistency similar to melty, runny ice cream or pudding. It\u2019s made from masa and laced with vanilla and cinnamon, and it\u2019s popular in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/travel-guide\/Mexico.tg145\/\">Mexico<\/a> and Central America. Atole is also a mainstay during Mexican holidays\u2014like Day of the Dead and Epiphany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In related matters:<\/strong> Keep your eyes peeled for fruit and pine nut (atole de pi\u00f1ones) versions as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where you\u2019ll find it:<\/strong> Street vendors ladle it from large steel pots throughout Mexico, including in <a href=\"..\/..\/flights\/to-OAX\/to-Oaxaca\/\">Oaxaca<\/a>. You\u2019ll also find it at popular Tamales Emporio, a small tamale restaurant in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico\u2019s bustling capital. That\u2019s a good thing to know when planning your next <a href=\"..\/..\/travel-guide\/Mexico\/Mexico_City.tg30682\/\">Mexico City vacation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thick and redolent of cinnamon, cloves and orange peel, purple corn-based <strong>api morado<\/strong> dates back to Incan times. These days, it\u2019s a breakfast staple throughout <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/travel-guide\/Bolivia.tg29\/\">Bolivia<\/a>. Order it with <em>bu\u00f1uelos (fritters) or empanadas for a perfect kick-start to days.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Good to know:<\/strong> It\u2019s possible to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boliviabella.com\/api-morado.html\">replicate<\/a> the drink at home\u2014provided you can get your hands on ground purple corn. However, there\u2019s nothing like getting it right from the source.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where you\u2019ll find it: <\/strong>Api morado is especially prevalent in the Andean highlands. Look for it in restaurants and at street stands alike, and consider it a good excuse to book a <a href=\"..\/..\/travel-guide\/Bolivia.tg29\/\">Bolivia vacation
