Given it&#8217; a long stretch far from any significant holiday \u2013 sorry, but Valentine&#8217;s Day doesn\u2019t count \u2013 it&#8217;s a wise time to spice things up.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s an idea: take a cooking class in early 2012, while settling in to affordable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/New-York-Hotels.d178293.Travel-Guide-Hotels\/\">New York hotels<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Honestly, there&#8217;s no better time to perfect winter soup-making skills. That&#8217;s why a trip to <strong>Camaje Bistro<\/strong> at 85 MacDougal Street is key on Jan. 15 ($95 for one or $175 for two). Starting at 5:30 p.m., participants will learn the art of stock-making before moving on to craft hearty Tuscan bean and sausage, pumpkin and saffron-scented seafood soups. Craving mom&#8217;s chicken and veg? That&#8217;s part of the equation, too.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, attending the Sunday night supper club at <strong>Ger-Nis Culinary &amp; Herb Center<\/strong> ($130) on Jan. 15 affords a tempting foodie getaway as well. Located in Brooklyn at 540 President Street, Ste. 2E, the event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and highlights spicy, sultry and sweet Moroccan flavors, with dishes that include wild-caught grouper with roasted Jerusalem artichokes and kalamata olives, and a lamb shank tagine with pumpkin and baby root vegetables. There will also be live jazz and libations.<\/p>\n<p>Never thought of visiting New York for cooking classes alone?
