Credit: ebodie.

By Jennifer Olvera

The New Year’s holiday is a festive affair for Bajans, who usher in the season with Junkanoo. Its roots date back to the 17th century, when it was introduced as time-off celebration for slaves. Today, it consists of parades, traditional dancing, live music and intricate, eye-popping costumes. Festivities spring up islands-wide during the wee hours on Boxing Day (December 26) and on New Year’s Day, providing the perfect excuse to book a Bahamas vacation. The gathering is purportedly named after “John Canoe,” an African tribal chief and West Indies slave. The biggest and best-known fête occurs on Nassau’s Bay Street on January 1, when revelers gather from about 2 a.m. until 8 a.m. Among the lively, kaleidoscopic activities are floats, which travel along people-thronged streets; a fiercely competitive costume contest; and rhythmic music, driven by goatskin drums, whistles and copper bells. Seating is limited and must be purchased in advance, though standing to watch the parade is free.

Typically, Junkanoo events are also held in West End on Boxing Day and in Freeport on New Year’s Day. Junkanoo gatherings also take place at other locales, such as Harbour Island, Eleuthera and the Bimini Islands.

There’s even a museum dedicated to the bash: the Junkanoo Expo, which is nestled within a former customs warehouse at Prince George Wharf. It features colorful costume displays, memorabilia, paintings and small parade floats. Naturally, there’s an art and handicraft-filled souvenir shop as well.

Can’t make it this year? A downsized Junkanoo festival also takes place mid-summer on the island of Grand Bahama.

Related resources

Bahamas hotels

Nassau hotels

Cheap flights to the Bahamas

The Cove Atlantis

Jennifer Olvera is a Chicago-based author, editor and food enthusiast, who travels often – usually in search of her next great meal.

The New Year’s holiday is a festive affair for Bajans, who usher in the season with Junkanoo, a celebration filled with parades, traditional dancing, live music and intricate, eye-popping costumes.
