{"id":1052,"date":"2009-08-03T09:54:08","date_gmt":"2009-08-03T14:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/?p=1052"},"modified":"2016-12-17T11:28:41","modified_gmt":"2016-12-17T17:28:41","slug":"on-the-road-airlines-add-cut-flights-new-hotels-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/on-the-road-airlines-add-cut-flights-new-hotels-open\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Road: Airlines add, cut flights; new hotels open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1053\" title=\"business_travel\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/business_travel.jpg\" alt=\"flights\" width=\"250\" height=\"175\" \/>By Joe Brancatelli<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>FUN IN FLORIDA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>More Flights and Hotels for the Sunshine State<\/strong>: It may not always be sunny in Florida, but there&#8217;s always plenty of new <strong><a title=\"Cheap flights, cheap tickets on Orbitz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/PrepareFlightsTab\" target=\"_blank\">flights<\/a><\/strong> andnew <a title=\"Hotels, motels, hotel reservations on Orbitz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/ViewHotelSearch\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>hotels<\/strong><\/a> to talk about.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the lodging front, there&#8217;s a new 82-room <strong>Fairfield Inn<\/strong> and a 98-room <strong>Courtyard by Marriott <\/strong>in <strong>St. Augustine<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The 408-room <a title=\"W South Beach on Orbitz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/ViewSpecificHotelLP?masterId=306809\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>W South Beach<\/strong><\/a> has opened at 22nd Street and Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. And a 95-room <strong>Holiday Inn Express<\/strong> opened in Largo, Florida.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Meanwhile, <strong>AirTran Airways<\/strong> is bulking up in Florida for the fall and winter. It will resume daily flights from <strong>Tampa to Flint, Michigan<\/strong>, on October 6 and then restore daily <strong>Flint-Fort Myers<\/strong> service on November 4. There will also be four weekly <strong>Flint-Fort Lauderdale<\/strong> flights beginning November 4. Also returning to the schedule is Florida service from Akron\/Canton. Starting November 4, there will be four daily flights to Fort Lauderdale and daily flights to Fort Myers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>ROUTE MAP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Routes Are Beginning to Drop Like Flies Now<\/strong>: The collapse of business travel that effectively began with the collapse of Lehman Brothers last September is really beginning to effect the global network of airline routes. Here&#8217;s a brief list of what we know will disappear in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Along with the previously announced fall cuts at its once-mighty Cincinnati hub, <a title=\"Delta: Flights to top destinations on Orbitz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/GDDC?deal_id=air-delta-air-lines\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Delta Air Lines<\/strong><\/a> will drop nonstops to <strong>Dayton, Ohio<\/strong>, and <strong>Birmingham, Alabama<\/strong>. Also taking the pipe are Delta&#8217;s routes from <strong>Lincoln, Nebraska<\/strong>, to its hubs in Salt Lake City and Atlanta. Delta will also pull out of <strong>Dubuque, Iowa<\/strong>, and kill flights to Cincinnati and Atlanta from <strong>Cedar Rapids, Iowa<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Internationally, routes getting the axe are <strong>Tampa-Cancun on JetBlue Airways<\/strong>, <strong>Portland (Oregon)-Frankfurt on Lufthansa<\/strong> and <strong>Atlanta-Mumbai and Atlanta-Cape Town on Delta<\/strong>. Delta has also canceled plans to launch a New York\/Kennedy-Mumbai flight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Meanwhile, <a title=\"American Airlines on Orbitz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/GDDC?deal_id=air-american-airlines\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>American Airlines<\/strong><\/a> will slash 18 flights from its St. Louis hub. Going on August 25 will be commuter flights to <strong>Cedar Rapids, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Tulsa and Springfield, Missouri<\/strong>. On November 19, American will drop service to <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> and <strong>San Diego<\/strong> and trim its schedule to several other cities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>HOTEL HOT SHEET<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Get Your Lodging Scorecard Out<\/strong>: The hotel-development pipeline continues to gush forth new properties even as the lodging business is in a major downturn. Get out your scorecard and see if your favorite city and\/or preferred hotel chain is represented in this week&#8217;s tranche of openings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From <strong>Hilton<\/strong>, there&#8217;s the 190-room Embassy Suites in <strong>downtown Buffalo<\/strong>, the 410-room Hilton Dalaman Golf Resort &amp; Spa on <strong>Turkey&#8217;s Mediterranean Coast<\/strong> and the 320-room Doubletree Qingdao in <strong>Shandong Province, China<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Marriott<\/strong> has added a 140-room Fairfield Inn near <strong>Buffalo Airport<\/strong>, a 109-room Residence Inn near the Costa Rican capital of <strong>San Jose<\/strong> and a 299-room Marriott in <strong>Lancaster, Pennsylvania<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hyatt<\/strong> has opened a 142-room property in <strong>Jeddah<\/strong>, the business center of Saudi Arabia. <strong>Accor<\/strong> has opened a 203-room Novotel on <strong>Juhu Beach near Mumbai, India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A 244-room Four Points by Sheraton has opened in <strong>Manhattan&#8217;s Times Square<\/strong> district. A 127-room Hotel Indigo has replaced the historic former Bel Air West Motel in the Central West End of <strong>St. Louis<\/strong>. A 132-room Red Lion hotel in <strong>Baton Rouge, Louisiana<\/strong>, has switched to the Radisson brand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NEED TO KNOW<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On-the-Road Intelligence to Help You Travel Smarter:<\/strong> Try to act surprised by this: <strong>Republic Airways<\/strong>, the company that snapped up both Frontier Airlines and Midwest Airlines last month, says that the two carriers will begin<strong> code-sharing<\/strong> later this summer. The airlines&#8217; small frequent flier programs &#8212; Frontier EarlyReturns and Midwest Miles &#8212; will also be linked.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speaking of Denver-based <strong>Frontier<\/strong>, the airline will drop flights to <strong>El Paso, Texas<\/strong>, and <strong>Grand Junction, Colorado<\/strong>, on September 14.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Tourism to Hawaii may be sagging, but there are more car-rental options then ever. An <strong>Alamo Rent A Car<\/strong> branch has opened at the airport on Molokai and <strong>Enterprise Rent-a-Car<\/strong> offices have opened at the airports in Hilo and Kona on the Big Island and Lihue, Kauai.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A new operator has taken over the <strong>airport shuttle<\/strong> concession at <strong>St. Louis\/Lambert<\/strong> and prices have risen. Go Best charges $21 one-way to\/from downtown, up from the previous firm&#8217;s $15.
