Zaton Holiday Resort3.0 out of 5.0

Zaton is trying to be a luxury resort but (IMO) it is not. It is more a good accommodation with a lot of facilities but do not make a mistake by comparing it with other high standard luxury resorts where you can enjoy the day laying down on a private beach and having your cocktails served. We (2 adults + 1 child: 2 years old) had travelled by car and I will be reviewing step by step as experienced and, of course, try to summarize/generalize as much as possible. ARRIVING (by car): If you are arriving from the North during the busy times after, lets say 3.00 pm, it is better to take the exit Policnik/Visocane in order to avoid the traffic in front of Zadar. And road itself is really nice. The navigation system usually doesn’t direct towards this way as it seems 5 min. longer but it might seem a better option instead of getting in traffic which can create a 20-30 min. delay(sometimes even more). RECEPTION: The check-in at the reception was fast and without any problems. Afterwards we discovered that they assigned a mobile home to us very far from everything and we had to walk 15 min. to the nearest beach. Normally not a problem but not when the temperature is +35. Probably they didn’t consider that we had a child with us because I saw a few mobile homes much closer and they were empty for a while. Checkout was even faster and no further comment on that. Compliments for parking entry/exit approach: the receptionist registered our car template and we were able to drive in and out at any time without even stopping. Just drive slow and the gate will open automatically. ACCOMMODATION: We had a Premium mobile home for 4 persons as we wanted to have more space. I new that pictures online are usually displaying the accommodation bigger/larger than it actually is but in this case I would suggest to downsize the pictures virtually in your mind as in the so called real-time the rooms are really small. If you had travelled/stayed in the past in a caravan – you will, for sure, have the pleasure also this time. But if you were hoping to stay in a nice luxury bungalow: you will be disappointed. The real ‘luxury’ we had was: - the parking in front of the door and that was really good. - the large terrace where we could relax, especially during the evening s when no neighbors were having a loud party. We had 1 master bedroom, 1 living room with kitchen, 2 spare bedrooms, 2 toilets, 1 shower and a large terrace with sunbeds. The ‘master bedroom’ is big enough to fit 1 bed and 1 small closet in it, leaving you exactly 0,5-meter-wide space to move around. So, 2-way ‘traffic’ doesn’t work and you have to wait till someone makes his way before to proceed with your own. The living room/kitchen is very small and we didn’t really use it as we were outside almost all the time or on the terrace. 2 spare bedrooms were mostly used as a storage. 1 silent detail about the hot water. Suddenly the water became very cold and we didn’t know the reason until I discovered that Zaton applies the same approach as it is during the stay in a caravan – they simply are using the small and replaceable gas cylinders. True is true, when I informed the reception and underlined the fact of staying with a child – the gas cylinder was replaced within approx. 20-30 minutes. TIP: if you are facing this situation, don’t waste your time waiting in cue behind the visitors to be checked-in. Just go straight to the free desk and request urgently the replacement of the gas cylinder. Otherwise it might take an hour before you can take a shower again, especially during the evening when it was usually a very busy time for the receptionists. It was very strange to see that the regular private caravans are facilitated closer to the beach than the mobile homes. Actually, they were exactly between the sea and the mobile homes. We tried to understand why pay so much more money (for mobile homes) and be so far from everything(beach, restaurants, 20 minutes to reach the swimming pools). The only reasonable explanation we could see – was the possible privacy reason, far from everything. But if the places among the caravans and mobile homes could be switched – that wouldn’t damage the privacy as well. Remains a strange matter. FACILITIES: The promenade is nice but it is not a parallel to the sea as it goes vertically from reception to the beach. There is sidewalk line on the coast but without restaurants and other facilities. Nice to have a romantic walk but no chance to enjoy the sea view form a terrace. There is only 1 pizzeria(Pizzeria More) from where you can partly see the sea. The main breakfast/dining facility is very busy but you will always find a place. We didn’t include the breakfast/dinner in our booking but could just pay the entrance fee around 15 EUR per person (free for children) and enjoy the all-you-can-eat approach. Other restaurants are really good but the menu is everywhere more or less the same: a lot of grill and pasta (we were OK with both). Outside of Zaton I would suggest to visit Restaurant Franco on the way to(or from) Zadar. The pizzas are a must-try as they are prepared from zero in a stone oven and taste really good! Furthermore, there is nice cocktail/ice bar(Bruno) in the middle of the line with acceptable price/quality. Again, do not expect a luxury level. Across the reception there is an ATM and a supermarket where you can buy all the necessary items. There is also a bakery which is also good and makes a very fresh bread. The beach is designed for small children and if you don’t want to walk approx. 50 meters searching for the deep water, I would suggest to walk towards the boots(just follow the sign RENT-A-BOOT), cross-pass the net just before the pier and you will find a nice beach with a very few visitors. Watch-out for the dogs but the swimming there is a pleasure. You can also reach it by car if you drive around the park; just turn to the left every time. There is an animation team and a lot of other things to do where, I am sure, you will find yours. Live music in the evening, animation for children, disco, a lot of excursions. Swimming pools are nice and large enough to facilitate everyone. Negative part is that you have to pay additionally for the sunbeds. No exception for guests. THINGS TO DO: If you have the chance, it is approx. 1 hour drive to Trogir or Split. Both cities are magnificent. We also visited (by car) Pag and Novalja on the island. A nice drive-around. For shopping there is a covered mall Supernova – some 10-15 minutes drive from Zaton. DEPARTURE: As mentioned earlier, the checkout was done very fast. In case you have to travel towards Slovenia/Austria, I really recommend to depart as early as possible in order to avoid the traffic. TIP: if you have the chance, plan the departure on Sunday or Monday because on Saturday it is traffic almost everywhere before the Slovenian borders and might take hours. After our visit we concluded that Zaton could be a nice place to stay for the families with children, especially if the children are >5 years old. However, there is really a lot of pleasure items offered for everyone. If I have to classify this resort, I would give it max 3 stars (out of 5 stars).
First of all I have to say that my kids loved the place. It is a very big resort so all the kids have scooters or bikes to get from place to the place. I bought scooters for my 3 year old and 6 year old. They used them all the time. We spend a week in resort and it was great. We got "lucky" and got one of the older rooms. It was one bedroom room with an extra sofa bed in living room. My mum took a sofa bed and kids and I took a bedroom. The room had a small kitchenette without a kettle (we'd been told by reception that we don't get one in one bedroom apartments and that's it... hmmm). Negative: the room smelled of mould and had some ant problem. And my mum didn't tell me almost till the end of our stay that her bed was absolutely awful - the whole mattress was broken and extremely uncomfortable... (if I new that earlier I would demand to change the room but I didn't...). And as I said earlier it didn't have a kettle and we couldn't get one from reception. Positive: kids loved it! They loved the pools and all the evening entertainment. Kids had fun at the beach and just scootering around. The resort had a Kids club - staff did speak english but there were no kids that spoke English so my kids got bored quickly. However, my kids took a small part in Mary Poppins show and they really loved it. We had most of our meals outside the resort or we made our own in the room. Tries the buffet but it was too average - never went back. The resort's Pizza was great and in the afternoon it didn't take long to get it.
Perfect holiday spot for families with small children. Lots of playgrounds, self-service restaurant, renovated swimming pools. And last but not least - great animation team with plenty of activities, our children loved it there!
we had a wonderful time and really enjoyed our stay in the resort. facilities were excellent, staff very helpful, and a nice selection of resorts, with other offi-site options in Nin just down the road.
We was there after the main season, and a bigger apartment was offered for us. (An Apartment for 4, instead of apartment for 2). Everything was excellent, the several different playground was awesome.
Excellent accomodation in **** aparments, full scope of services in the resort, outstanding fun for kids, newly renovated swimming pools. I don´t know the quality of other types of accomodation, but most of the people I talked to were happy.
We were traveling with our 1.5 years old kid and she had great fun in the backyard and the beach. The resort is child friendly and provides lots of facilities to the guests, including the renovated swimming pool. Sadly there was only sofa bed option in our room so I am taking a star.
We stayed in zaton holiday resort for 3 nights at end of September. We stayed in a studio apartment which suited 2 of us for the short stay. The resort was quiet at this time of year but seemed to have lots of activities for families. We had bad weather so didn't get to enjoy the fantastic pools. We walked to Nin which is a quaint village nearby. We had a car so we drove to Zadar 2 evenings and Plitvice national park one day. The only issue we had was no electricity on our last night that could not be sorted until the morning. We would recommend this resort for families as there are great facilities.
A beautiful complex on the beach in a pine forest.Perfect place.Various entertainments for any age. Lovely pools for children and adults. In the complex there are all necessary shops, fine restaurants, a pharmacy. it was a wonderful holiday, we are very satisfied. Highly recommended. We lived in 4 * apartments.
Very nice place, ideal for kids, clean, we are definetly going again next year. We had halfboard and it was delicous, great variety of food. My recomendation is only to build more toilets close to the beach.
