Rodeway Inn Sonora2.0 out of 5.0

The hotel capitalizes on the fact there are few hotel options in Sonora. They raised the rate x100% when the Strawberry Festival was going on in the next town and completely ripped off guests. It's a complete waste of money. Don't fall into the trap! Don't stay here.
This hotel is dirty, overcrowded and neglected. Because the ownership obviously has a contract with a local utility company to house their workers, the rest of the paying guests shouldn't have to tolerate chronic parking shortages and young men lurking around with nothing to do. Definitely not a family atmosphere. I would never stay there again.
This is a clean, neat no-frills place to stay. Same with "breakfast": coffee, juice, pastries/toast. Great location to downtown and the fairgrounds, in that I parked the car and walked to restaurants, shops, and events at the fairgrounds (.4 miles). I do not know if any of the rooms have a bathtub, but I had just a shower. Btw, the water power was amazing! And, there was a fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker in the room. Though, my coffee was not replaced on two days, and I had to go to the front desk and ask for replacements.
If you check-in after a certain time you'll wind up having to go next door to the Sonora Inn to check in, which was no biggie. The parking lot was completely full so we had to park across the street at the bank which isn't great if you have a bunch of stuff to haul in. There were a lot of utility pickups parked in the lot that beep every time they backed out of their parking spot which was not pleasant early in the morning. Room was average, nothing fancy but it was clean. A/C worked fine and had fridge in the room. Breakfast fare was very minimal
We stayed here on our way to San Francisco after visiting Yosemite. We were visiting Calaveras the next day. We reserved room by phone the day before and all went well. When we arrived, the parking lot was overflowing with utility trucks and workers - we were told that about 60 men working in the area were staying there - apparently they've worked in the area for 3 years and often stay at the Rodeway. Luckily we got a parking spot in front of our room. There was lots of activity outside our room, on the balcony and in the parking lot. One guy was working on a laptop at his truck next to our car and conversing with other workers. It was quiet once bedtime came but if you're looking for a quiet hotel, check first to see if 60 utility workers will be staying there or next door at Sonora Inn that night. It was not a good first impression. Room was clean. Bed comfortable. Breakfast/coffee was not ready at 7 the next morning as they said it would be.
was not good. substandard. unfriendly staff. poor location, near noisy road. When shift changes, no communication between shifts. I wish I had checked reviews on yelp before reviewing. Photos not like place
The only good thing was the staff were nice. It wasn't worth the price at all. Room was much too small and smelled old. Spiders and webs in the bathroom and overall not very clean. Also not enough parking and twice I had to park on the street and walk too far to the room.
We had researched the Rodeway Inn prior to calling them directly to make a reservation for late arrival. We were visiting Yosemite and Rodeway Sonora was about 2 hours fro Yosemite Village, but it was a little better priced than some that were closer. We were able to get a AAA discount and points. We called the day of to confirm the reservation and late arrival. The desk clerk told us that there would be a sign on the door and we would go to the Sonora Inn next door to check-in late. The receptionist at Sonora was very nice and helpful as there were no parking spaces left at the motel, she directed us to park in a bank parking lot nearby. We ended up eating in Applebees, one of the few places open after midnight, but it was quite a distance away. We had a stall shower which was ok, but my husband found it claustrophobic. Only 1 pillow per person, I would prefer two, but the beds and pillows were comfy. We had a refrigerator and microwave in the room and a 24 hour desk which works for us. We would stay there again.
The location is great, just a block from the main street with restaurants and shops. Other than that it's a place to avoid. I only paid $125 but this was for a room with a bathroom window that didn't close properly, tiles falling off the walls, and somewhat foul-smelling water from the sink and shower (no tub in room, only a tiny rather dirty shower). The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful though, just that the property really needs some renovation.
Price point tells it all. Its cheap, yet clean. Nice staff, although I had to go to Sonora Inn across the way to check in (not a big deal). I arrived late and left early; it served its purpose! If you dont expect much you wont be disappointed.
