DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Bristol South - Cadbury House4.0 out of 5.0

This is a fancy hotel outside of Bristol. If you want to see Bristol itself, this hotel is kind of far outside the city. An all-day bus pass will cost you 6 GBPs, which is better than paying 4 GBPs for a one-way ticket. The nice thing is that the bus stop is right at the end of the drive up to the hotel. The ride into Bristol was something like 45 minutes long. There is also a train station that is farther away, which I never walked to since the bus stop was so convenient. The hotel itself is tacked on to the side of the historic Cadbury House, which is gorgeous and which they rent out for weddings and whatnot. The surrounding area is beautiful, just not near the city center, if that's what you are going for. Hotel guests can use "The Club", which is a fully-equipped gym with a pool. This is a very nice amenity. Note that the the members there are the locals, and when I was there, the pool was full of parents with their kids. I don't think it was possible to really get any laps in. Oh!! But the cardio equipment all have personal computer monitors, on which you can watch tv or even surf the web. I used the web on my treadmill to look for a hotel at our next destination. The breakfast at the hotel, as with most hotels I stayed at in the UK, is outrageously expensive. Maybe Brits are used to paying 17 GBPs for breakfast?? The room itself was nice. I had a "twin" room with two beds. The beds were actually a bit wider than a real twin-sized bed, so that was a nice surprise. The hotel gives nice shampoo/conditioner/lotion/body wash and they replenish it daily (which I found was not universally done in the UK), so that was nice. The room was clean, with nice modern furnishings. The bathroom was large, given the teensy bathrooms I found in other UK hotels. Now that I think about it, it was the largest bathroom with the least-claustrophobic shower/tub of all the hotels I have stayed at in the UK. There is only free wifi in the lounge area, and they try to charge you for the wifi when you are in your room. That, I think, is lame. Because the hotel is tacked on to that historic building, getting around the hotel is a bit like navigating a rat maze. I was on the ground floor, but to get there from reception, you have to take the elevator up, walk around, and then find another elevator to take you down. It was a bit confusing. But then, being on the ground floor put me really close to the parking lot, so getting luggage to and from the car was easy.
