+Just called in for dinner en-route to Bath. -Wish we'd carried on to Bath!! Food quality was very poor. My wife had ham which smelt and tasted off. On complaint to waitress she returned it to the kitchen and returned to advise that the 'chef' had no comment to make other than that he would check his remaining stock to see if it was the same?? Not even an appology or follow up-- I think they have lost their service compass!! Very poor quality food.
If you are looking for a lower priced hotel close to Bath it's a good choice. Even better for Dyrham Park as it's one of the closest. Alas, the whole hotel is quite in need of updating. The room (38) was quite dark as there was a lot of foliage built up outside the window. It was also noisy from the extractor fan in the room above. It was intrusively noisy. The walk from Reception is quite a hike. We had a drink in the bar when we got back in the evening and it didn't give the impression of a place to linger. All in all the countryside location and quiet surrounding should make it an awful lot better than it is. Three stars rather than two because the room was spotless.
We checked in and the room was nice but the bathroom was a little dated decoration wise that said everything worked and worked well too. A very nice hot shower and it was all spotlessly clean too. After getting back to the hotel a little late for dinner and absolutely soaking and covetd in mud we were given a menu told order your food then go get dry and changed if you want to we will cook your meal and will wait for you to get back to your table or call your room when its ready. A shower and a hot meal. The portions are generous and this is some very good home cooking! The staff were so lovely we had a bit of car trouble too and they just made everything ok. Bed was a little firm for us but that's personal preference to be fair. Can't fault this place and I would definitely stay here again and we are two fussy ladies!
Really disappointed in our stay. The hotel is in desperate need of a makeover. There is a horrible smell of damp which given the number of automatic air freshners going off in the corridors I suggest the hotel is trying to mask, however the horrible smell is still there. The bed was appalling, I could feel the bed springs coming up underneath the sheet. We were so disappointed we didn't bother with breakfast so cannot comment on the food. Plus point, the lady on reception was pleasant.
So, after driving around the village for ages, calling the hotel and being told that it 'might be on my left or right off the man road' I finally stumbled across it. Despite it being past 11pm, the lady at the check in was friendly and helpful. To be blunt, I was expecting more. The rooms were spacious, but very dated and had that fusty 'the carpet has seen more action than me' smell. For sone reason my bed was the fold down from a wardrobe sort - but was comfy enough. The shower was electric, but was actually fine. The main gripe was that the walls were paper thin. I'll stay at the premier inn a couple of villages over next time.
Comfortable, spacious bedrooms & good breakfast. Bathrooms quite dated but clean - bathroom lighting poor. Hotel in a good location for visiting Bristol, Chippenham, but lounges & general areas in need of updating/ re-decorating. Due to this we felt our stay was a little over priced. We waited a long time to be served coffee in the lounge!
We were a party of 4 for an evening meal. Staff were very efficient and polite. Food was great - spot on for what we needed with a great selection. We sat in the extension bit which was a little warm (but wasn't everywhere!) - fascinating grape vine grows across the ceiling which is a bit of a talking point.
My wife and I live in Bristol but our family lives all over England. We have used the Compass Inn at Tormarton, Gloucester as a meeting point if the family are in transit but not planning to actually stay with us, because it is immediately adjacent to Junction 18 of the M4 Motorway and easily accessible as they are passing by. This is a Best Western hotel, probably about 3 stars. The restaurant is very reasonable in quality and price. Beers and wines seem very reasonable and the staff are efficient and affable. There is ample parking with large areas of grass for families with small children who want to run-around a bit. One thing which surprised me was that we called in recently for afternoon tea. We could have tea but there wasn't a menu option for a strawberry cream tea. We made do with blueberry muffins and tea-cakes and it was all very nice but a large venue like that should in my opinion be able to produce something a little more exciting than one type of tea and a limited selection of cakes and biscuits from the bar. I will certainly call again, it has all that we need for a family meeting place but with a little energy it could be a whole lot better. For example, do be aware of the large holes in the entrance to the car park which have the potential to damage the suspension on a vehicle.
Stay for a stop over as the traffic on the motorways was slow. Glad I found this hotel, tuck back out of the way, just a couple of minutes off the motorway, but you cant hear the traffic noise. All of the staff were friendly and Food was some of the best I've tasted. Had a couple of pints of cloudy cider, all in all, it turned out to be a great evening to be fed, watered and rested up!! Will pop back in again if I am in the area again.
Erratic & slow Wi-Fi, no phone service and faded décor. On the upside the food was OK, the staff were friendly and at least I had company at my breakfast table - although the ants weren't much company!
