Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone4.0 out of 5.0

In 2012, our family of five adults went to Ireland for vacation. We stopped in Athlone because it was halfway between Westport and Dublin, our two other stops. In Westport, which on weekends is populated by Dubliners, we repeatedly heard, "Why are you going to Athlone?" Here's why . . . The city is a find, and the hotel would be five stars in any other location. Our rooms faced the Shannon River and provided wonderful views. Well worth the upgrade. The location is across the river from a historic castle, cathedral, barracks, and most importantly, Sean's Pub the oldest bar in Ireland (honest, ask Guinness). Walked to them all in one afternoon, and returned to Sean's for the night's entertainment. Everything in the town -- restaurants, shops, tourist sites -- is within walking distance of this hotel. The staff, which was largely non-Irish, was superb and always available. The restaurant is great. At night, the deck next to the bar and on the river is even better. If you have a car, you can quickly travel to Clonmacnoise, the Kilbeggan distillery, or other places; and, if you don't, there are tours available. The Viking boat rides on the river across from the hotel was also a treat, and very informative. Athlone sits at the mid-point of the Shannon River, and of the Galway-Dublin train line. The train station is about two blocks away from the hotel -- it's about one hour to Galway and one-half hours to Dublin. You can see a lot of Ireland while staying in Athlone, and save a fortune compared to Dublin or Galway hotel rates.
Our family of 5 adults found Athlone and the Radisson Blu Hotel, true highpoints of our stay. It's a first class, modern hotel, with the reasonable rates, in a FANTASTIC location -- on the Shannon river; across from the historic castle, barracks, bridge, and Sean's pub; easy drives to Clonmacnoise, Tullamore, and other historic sites. Upgrade rooms for river view. The train station is 2 blocks away. Staff was especially helpful. Athlone is a walkable, compact gem of a town. Like all of Ireland, residents are friendly and helpful.
This is a fantastic hotel with very friendly staff and upscale rooms. Everything was very clean, and surprisingly first class when you consider the price. This was a true highlight to our trip to Ireland.
Perfect location. Beautiful hotel.
