Goods: 1.the beds was comfortable 2. You can open the windows properly which is nice when hot if wanted 3. Shower of power was quite good 4. Breakfast and dinner was quite nice 5. Most staff were generally friendly and helpful 6. Had a gym and pool 7. Had nice outdoor seating area 8. Car park was fairly large - well..... huge Bads: 1: Gym was old and knackered - cross trainer felt like you were going around in a square shape 2: Pool was drained and not useable 3: Tables in the upstairs bar were too low so can't do any work 4: Down stairs bar was v old and dated tables were v sticky 5: Bar staff wouldn't let me take a coke to the place I was allowed to sit for some reason so had to stay thirsty 6: the bedroom was dated as was the bathroom 7: carpets in hotel were mish mash and outside looked tired and both the room and common parts smelt like that old musty smell This hotel has potential to be lovely as the building is nice and generally has everything. Believe it had a shuttle bus which came semi often not that a needed it. To compete they should freshen this place up and bring it up to date as that is the biggest let down here.
We generally use either this or the Copthorne when we travel from Gatwick. To be honest for personal service I prefer the Effingham. Yes the decor is a tad tired and yes the carpets are a little worn, but we are only using it as somewhere convenient to sleep near Gatwick before we go on holiday. We have stayed here several times and other than a slight problem locating our car keys when we returned from a holiday last October I have always felt my car will be safe here. For the most part when we return the car is where we have left it. We have never had a problem with the food - yes it's expensive but you expect that as they have a captive audience- if you don't like it don't order it, or eat on the way. I have always found the bar staff to be really helpful and quite chatty. The rooms have always been clean with nice towels and toiletries in the bathroom. The beds provide a varying degree of comfort - have only ever had one bad experience with the beds over several stays. On our most recent visit there was a large wedding party the night before we flew and several of the guests surrounding our rooms were slamming doors after midnight - not necessary but we got our own back when up for an early flight!! There were also a couple of wedding parties when we returned to collect our car, resulting in a long queue to collect our keys and there was only one girl on reception. Personally if it had been me and my wedding party checking in I would have let the person collecting their keys to jump the queue, rather than wait for endless people to check-in and moan about the rooms they had been allocated, but then not everyone is very considerate!! Not the hotel's fault by any means. We will continue to use the Effingham when we fly from Gatwick as we always find it to be value for money for what you are getting, but it could do with a bit of a refresh.
The pillows were rock hard. The refrigerator didn't work and it took a couple of days and a couple of follow up calls to get it fixed. The wifi was virtually unusable because it would blink in and out of service. The room was worn down. Carpets frayed, The bathroom needs updating. Parking was often difficult to find. The overall feel of the hotel is rundown. The pictures they present you on the website make it look much better than it really is. There is another Copthorne Hotel very close by. It is far more charming. I would consider booking there before considering this one.
Booked here for an early flight from Gatwick. having heard that sometimes the parked cars have additional mileage on the clock on return from holiday, I noted mileage and took a photo on the form you submit with your keys and we didn't have any issue. The exterior DESPERATELY needs repainting, it looks awful. Really awful. The room was clean and tidy but basic, all we really expected for the price to be honest. The food was better than anticipated, we ate in the sports bar as it was more civilised than the shabby armchairs in the lounge area, Would probably look for a different hotel in the area if we needed to fly from Gatwick again, but for the price, have nothing to moan about.
we stayed here for one night and had booked 15 days parking,, we had a change of plan and had to extend for a further 6 days Emma on reception was very helpful and friendly as were all the staff large room with comfortable bed gave us a great nights sleep, we had dinner and breakfast both meals were excellent, yes parts of the hotel are in need of some TLC but at these prices your not gonig to get the ritz. we will certainly use this hotel again.
We stayed here for one night prior to our early morning flight from Gatwick The hotel price also included the parking the price was reasonable. This hotel was excellent for our needs the rooms are very spacious there was everything we needed in the room. The room was clean and well maintained although the decor was a little dated but I wouldn't let this put you off.The staff were very helpful and polite they asked us if we wanted to book a place on the shuttle bus which we did and they gave us the number of a taxi firm which gives you a good rate for our return. The shuttle was prompt and the taxi came quickly when we phoned it. The cost for 2 adults was £9.00 to the airport and £11.50 return. We found a parking space easily and would defiantly use the hotel and it's parking again.
We stayed here for one night prior to flying out of Gatwick. Check in fast and easy as was the parking. The room was a decent size and we had a reasonable nights sleep. The room was also spotlessly clean. Staff were friendly and informative. That's where the positives end I'm afraid. The entire hotel was incredibly dated. I don't just mean it could do with a little updating. It was rather depressing. Cracked sinks, very badly fitted worn carpets, slow lifts, scratched paintwork and woodwork everywhere. The bathroom smelled like drains. All in all this hotel needs a lot of money spending on it to drag it into the 21st century. I wouldn't stay here again.
Initially confusing to find. Entrance looked quite nice but there was a strong smell of cigarette smoke that tainted my hair and clothes instantly. Pretty chandelier, yet a cabinet full of tacky jewelery lowered the standards of the reception. Food: stops serving at 9.30pm! Didn't get to have any breakfast at 4am but maybe that was a blessing in disguise ... NO VEGAN OPTIONS. And one single veggie option that cost the same as pork livers! Fortunately I eat fish, and the medley was OK. The muscles were brittle and broke apart into my food, got stuck in my teeth. Probably need to see a dentist when I'm back home. UPDATE YOUR MENU. Bed wasn't comfy. Yes, fridge is loud and uselessly warm. Only got 3 hours sleep. Waste of time. At least our taxi driver was nice.
My wife and I very much enjoyed a 6 night’s stay at this hotel which we booked in Australia before leaving for the UK. Although the hotel, because of its location, caters in the main for holiday makers making their trip from Gatwick airport and using the hotel as a “car park” with a “trip package”, the hotel looked after us extremely well as if we were their only guests. The food is excellent and the staff are so friendly and attentive and they want to make everyone feel at ease. Any “complaints”, of which we only had one, were fived immediately . In this instance, the hotel had an overnight power cut and the television satellite service had to be re-booted and an electrician fixed our television set within 1 minute of being reported, Although the hotel cannot be described as “modern”, it is traditional with a feeling of comfort with plenty of space, quality fittings, and a general feeling of quality and spaciousness. We would defiantly make this our “home base” in the UK again. Richard Hayden and Liz James
We stayed here for one night before a flight from Gatwick the next day. Upon arrival the reception area is really nice. When we got into the room it was really dated and smelt like it needed a good clean. The bed was very uncomfortable, the in room fridge was loud. We had a drink in the bar which was ok. We had the worst nights sleep ever as a guest in another room was being extremely loud, in the end the police turned up and arrested him. I assume the entire floor heard everything that was going on and went out to look as the sound of slamming doors also added to the rubbish sleep. The parking when we arrived was chaos, there was nowhere to leave the car so it just got abandoned like the others in the middle of the car park. The next morning before the flight, I was able to move it. I have stayed at quite a few airport hotels, and I really wouldn't recommend this one... Sorry!
