I feel bad having to be so negative, because the bar, restaurant, kitchen and breakfast staff appear to be incredibly hard working. But all their efforts are completely undermined by whoever designed and built the bedrooms. There is virtually no soundproofing at all. When we arrived for a four-night stay we walked into our room and were amazed to hear a Frenchman talking loudly on the phone - but he wasn't actually in our room. He was next door. Not only could we hear his side of the phone conversation, but the person he was talking to as well! And it wasn't on speaker phone. That night we were kept awake by a neighbour's snoring. The second night we were kept awake for hours by coughing, sneezing and repeated shouted groans from a different occupant next door. We asked to be moved but were told by reception there were no alternative rooms. The receptionist claimed not to have heard of noise complaints before - yet produced a huge box of earplugs, offered gratis to guests! But the noise coming through the wall was so great even earplugs were of only marginal use. So another night of shouted moans from next door, followed by a whole night of snoring from a third occupant. We left exhausted. The corridors are also made entirely from hard surfaces, so that every footstep, suitcase, voice, door shutting, etc makes a sharp echo. And by catering to large groups and coach parties, who tend to generate enormous amounts of extra noise, the problems are multiplied. If the primary service offered by a hotel is a decent night's sleep, this hotel is a failure. I could not recommend anyone to stay there until serious remedial work has been completed on soundproofing the bedroom walls. It's a shame, because apart from the noise issues, the hotel has very good facilities - bar, restaurant, breakfasts, parking, etc. Though it's not ideally placed if you want to visit the centre of Ypres on foot - it's about a 20-25 minute walk, most of which has no footpath. So, in summary, a hard-working team let down by badly designed/built rooms.
Stayed there during a motorcycle tour of the WW1 sites , a great City Ypres! Hotel was perfect for parking , very comfortable rooms, beds are excellent, good breakfast, would recommend this hotel for traveling, on the outskirts of town but 4 mins in a taxi to the centre.
This hotel is below standard. The rooms are a very good size, but no tissues are offered. My bed was not made over 2 nights. I had pulled up the duvet and pulled it down to see that the bed had not been touched - 2 nights in a row. There is a separaye toulet and bathroom. The floor of the toilet was filthy. There were no obvious marks or bits left on it, but I had to mop up the floor and the cloth came away black.
This hotel is reasonably priced, very clean & comfortable beds. A wonderful breakfast. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Parking near rooms. Easy drive to the Menin Gate but away from the noise of the town centre.
Stayed here for one night during our tour of the battlefields of WW1. It's a very short drive outside the town in a sort of industrial estate, but very very pleasant inside in a mock cabin decor. We had a triple room for 128 euros with breakfast included. We especially loved the breakfast. Staff pleasant and efficient. Would certainly recommend, but definitely outside the town so you need a car.
I agree with 'TheOld fossils' review in most respects. They coped with my quite large group very well, certainly for the price.Just off the ring road avoids driving into town , but its only a 25 minute walk to the centre .Ideal. The rooms are mildly different [ sloping ceilings as built chalet style ] but really fine. I will return.
Hotel very clean and welcoming. Excellent breakfast catering for every nationality. Bed very comfortable. Lots of easy parking. One mile easy walk into Ypres town. Only niggle was all the hard surfaces in the hotel made for a bit of noise when other residents moved around corridors etc. There is no road noise. Having said that we would return if in the area again.
The Flanders Lodge is a bit of a strange place - and really needs to be considered by the individual elements. Starting with the positives, the breakfast (self service) was excellent (for a 3 star hotel), the evening meals "not bad" but all 3 courses were "set" for our group with no choices whatsoever (virtually unheard of) - but our main criticism would be the "atmosphere of the place - the public rooms are pretty dark / depressing.........but that is nothing compared to the bedroom which was the most dark and depressing room that we have ever stayed in anywhere
This hotel has poor management and is poor for anyone who wants a nights sleep . Very noisy as place where schools stay, on a main road and the management team are happy to have groups of people running up and down corridors screaming and banging doors all night. Avoid if you want a nights sleep.
Stopped here on a trip around Europe. Was pleased generally as thought it good for a 3 star. Welcome was good. Room was clean. Dinner in restaurant was good for this type of hotel and the waitress excellent and helpful. Rooms are a bit dark and lighting a little harsh but otherwise fine and would stay again. Breakfast was excellent with good choices. BW seem to continually struggle to recognise their own awards though. Am a Diamond member but no recognition given. Would not prevent me from staying again.
