Though someone wrote this was/is a "Soviet Era hotel" nothing is further from the truth. I went anticipating the likes of true Soviet hotels in the early 90s in eastern Europe. The building may in fact have been constructed during that period BUT it is totally renovated and has no appearance outside or in of any "Soviet Era hotel". The location can not be any better. The hotel is located only 100 meters/yards from Cathedral Square and a ten minute walk puts you at nearly every major attraction to include the castle/fortress. I had a problem with my room safe upon check-in at 1800 and I got attention within minutes of notifying the front desk. Although the problem could not be corrected that evening - by 0730 the next morning I had a brand new room safe delivered and installed!! Breakfast #included# for European style is well above average in selection. For the money the rooms #mine anyway# was hard to beat. I have stayed from Dublin dives to Middle East fives and rate this a very good deal. One low point > the breakfast starts at 0700 and no sooner. The other observation - the mini bar. Well well over priced but that's true nearly every where one stays. I was at the Amberton six days - never tired of the place. Though naturally the adjoining restaurant was hyped, the staff had no problem with me clearly bringing in food several times from local grocery stores. But like anything - you get what you pay for - want five star and pay three times as much #and I did compare the room prices#, then by all means stay at the hotel just across the street and pay for the name. This hotel is best suited for the tourist. That is true of the pricier hotel across the street. Business only travelers might prefer to stay at one of the business branded hotels in the newer section of Vilnius BUT would be sacrificing location and beautiful surroundings and rustic settings for certain. Amberton? I would certainly stay there for any follow-on visit. Oh as an afterthought - failed to find any German TV stations on the wide-screen but they do have CNN Int'l and Euro TV in English for English speakers. All the staff spoke from excellent to fairly good English and about half also spoke German.
The hotel staff were fantastic, very helpful, despite the limited resources of the hotel itself. The hotel restaurant was overpriced and underwhelming, but the staff pointed me out to a fabulous cafe and wine bar, nestled to the side of the building. And the location is amazing, truly!
