The Cliff Dweller on Lake Superior

You just cannot beat the ability to open your balcony and sit and watch the beauty of Lake Superior all to yourself. Every room has this view and the location is nearby the equally gorgeous Ray Berglund State Wayside Park - only a 5 min walk to awesome trail up to view a creek. It's also close to a market, liquor store, and Temperance River as well. Great complimentary breakfast in a large-size community room. Awesome bed, accommodations, and price.

There are some things to like about this hotel--the rooms have a million dollar view of Lake Superior, the owner and her ancient dog add a nostalgic touch, breakfast is very adequate, low priced rooms, location next to the Gitchi Gami bike trail. On the negative side, it needs updates such as new carpet, stain on decks, and replacing rotting floor boards on 2nd floor walkway. We have camped in nearby Grand Marais. When we decided to stay in a hotel on this year's visit to the North Shore there weren't many options available. It's nice to have a low priced option along the North Shore- but this property is unfortunately starting to show its age.

Pros: Staff is very friendly and welcoming guest. Breakfast has a lot varieties food. The view which facing the lake is great. Cons: Too many mosquito and flies in the room even we close the door. They just enter the room whenever we open the door immediately. in addition, There is a small gap between the door and the doorframe. Killed 10+ mosquito during first night. The Internet is only available at lobby area. There is no coffee machine in the room. The bathtub seems stuck. It drains water very slow.

The rooms are just the right size for sleeping and getting ready for each day. I don't spend a lot of time hanging out in a hotel room anyway, when there is so much to explore outside. If your an early riser, enjoy your lakeside balcony or get on the paved path that runs in front of the hotel and go for a walk until the continental breakfast (very nice BTW) is ready at 7:30. Nice restaurants are 4 miles in each direction. One thing to note, beds are one size smaller than a queen size so be comfortable with your partner:)

The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Our room was clean with an amazing view of Lake Superior. We will be staying there on our next visit to north eastern MN.

The staff was helpful and kind, the room cozy and comfy, and the view was spectacular. Breakfast in the morning was very ample, and again the view from the beautifully appointed dining room was serene and restful. We loved having coffee on our balcony and enjoying the sunrises/sunsets over Lake Superior. There are no grounds to walk around in, so you find your activities elsewhere. But the hotel is a very nice spot to overnight in. We will definitely visit the Cliff Dweller again.

This is an older hotel but well kept and the view was beautiful. All the rooms face Lake Superior and so does the breakfast nook. We got some pretty pictures from our balcony. This hotel is located on the Superior Hiking Trail.

Average hotel, a bit on the small side, but rates were good staff was nice and the room was clean.

A great view with a great price. Rooms are small with an average bed and box TV. You stay there for the view, location and price. Some rooms have mini fridge and microwaves but not all. I'd stay there again if we needed to count our pennies like we did this trip.

you could not be any closer to Lake Superior, great balcony off your room with fantastic views of the lake at sunrise and during the day.

I felt that it had a lot of charm but the carpets were really worn. The bathroom and bedding was very clean feeling. The view was spectacular and the breakfast was a good value

Clean, decent room. Good continental breakfast. Very close to rental spots for skiing, snowshoeing etc... and access to trails. Incredible view from every room, fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing on the rocks. Balcony was not private but was still cool. There is some road noise but didn't keep us awake. There was a white noise machine in the room. Also had a mini fridge, didn't expect that but it was very handy. The plumbing is touchy, a nice shower can turn scalding hot in a quarter second. Also the electrics are odd, need to flip a switch to get power to the tv. Not a big deal just a little weird. There are nicer places on the north shore but for the price it was perfect.

Key and receipt taped to door. Wind blew thru patio door to exit door. Comforters on beds were very old!!

Views of Lake Superior are excellent from every room.

A beautiful spot. Great breakfast. Wireless Internet was down but survived!

Slept to the sound of waves on the shore. Great location. They are suffering through the finishing touches of upgrade to Hwy 61, the North Shore highway. Done soon, August, 2010

Good: The hotel is right on Lake Superior and has good views. The staff was friendly and helpful Bad: Right next to a construction zone and very close to Hwy 61, so lot of road noise Maintenance of the hotel is very poor and it is very run down Amenities are non existent

Clean friendly motel , nice rooms all wirtha great veiw of the lake

I stayed here due to a wedding in the area, we got in late and they had made sure that our keys were available. They had a nice breakfast and the views from the rooms are amazing. I would visit here again no questions asked if I was to go North again.

Unfortunately road construction made it a bit difficult to get to, but otherwise a great place.
