We drove up the coast from Cabo to visit this wonderful little Baja city...small town, great artsy shops, restaurants. And of course, Hotel Californua. The Eagles Dream Wannabe'. Fun photo stop and bought great shirts for the NAME. Definitely playing on our favorite Eagles song, and surprised so many thought this WAS the real place. Fun, picturesque and fun little quiet town. Friendly and worth the 45 minute drive from Cabo! Fun stop!
Our cruise ship had a tour of Todo Santos and we ended with lunch at the Hotel California. It was a fun experience. The food was great and we very much enjoyed the bar. Our waiter was fun and we loved the ambiance on the outdoor patio.
I had booked this hotel for a couple of nights whilst travelling from Cabo, however, I in hindsight this was a mistake. There is actually very little to do in the town, especially in September when we went, and the Hotel simply doesn't live up to the hype. The rooms at the front are open to the road which is noisy at 6 am. There are only shutters on the windows so there is no way to block out the noise and of course, this also means there is is no air conditioning!!! Given the lack of air conditioning, it would have been nice to get at least some complimentary water. The beds were very uncomfortable so all in all we had a poor nights sleep. The water taps were not functioning properly on arrival and although were fixed, were still temperamental. The bathroom facilities were very basic, indeed the entire room was very basic. We tried to use the pool at the rear of the hotel but this was woeful with broken tiles underfoot. We didn't eat in the hotel but rather dined at La Casita down the street, which we very nice. There was little else to do in the town and most people simple stop by, take a photo and move on, which is what we should have done.
We were only here for a couple of hours. Todos Santos is a place I want to see more of. Hotel California was beautiful and very interesting. Loved the town. Town was clean. Streets were wide and well kept. Would love to stay here a while. Definitely a hidden gem. Planning to go back!
There are only a handful of hotels that have blown me away with an extraordinary experience, and Hotel California easily comes to mind as one of my top favorites. I have been lucky enough in my lifetime to stay at some incredible places- Splendido in Portofino, Elunda Beach on Crete... and while it can't boast 5 stars, Hotel California ranks up there with the best of them. First of all, the owner is as kind, helpful and welcoming as they come. The rooms are the exact kind of rustic I want in a small Baja town. The restaurant and bar are quite good and very consistent. But it's the incredible decor that first made me fall in love with Hotel California. The owner's late husband was passionate about turning the hotel into the visual gem that it is. The vibrant colors and textures everywhere make it feel magical. And even some of the details that aren't totally my style add to the unique character of the place, making feel like a grand eclectic estate. My husband and I stumbled upon Hotel California twelve years ago on our first vacation together when we were dating. We stopped in for lunch on a day trip from Cabo and ended up inspired to stay the night, renting the penthouse suite (highly, highly recommended) and arranging a romantic dinner on the suite's huge veranda. It was incredible and two years later we were married there. We've been back many times since, and are headed there, now as I type this. I'm so excited! For anyone who values unique character and an authentically romantic setting, you are going to LOVE this place. Like I do. :) (Note to The Eagles: this hotel has never claimed to be the hotel from the song. They've always explained it a "who knows?" Please leave this wonderful small business run by good people alone. The fact that they play the song only adds to the enjoyment of listening to it, adding happy personal memories to recall. No one sits there thinking it means anything. Your lawsuit has more ill effect on your song than what you are claiming. Such a shame.)
My wife and I were visiting the Cabo area and decided to drive up to see Todos Santos. The drive was very easy even though we had to stop on the freeway while the goats decided to cross the road. Once we got to Todos Santos, we walked around and visited the various shops and stores and went into the Mission. This was a day trip for us and we did NOT stay overnight in the actual hotel which is something I'd like to do on a future trip. After all that, we had lunch at the Hotel California. I grew up with The Eagles and really just wanted to visit the Hotel California. Sure, it is a tourist thing to do but darnit, we were tourists! So, we had a great lunch and probably paid a little too much but everything was wonderful. Please make sure you have cash though since you can put your food and drinks on a credit card but you can only TIP in cash. The servers will gladly take Mexican Pesos or US Dollars for tips. After lunch we stocked up on souvenir and gift items, paid dearly for them. What made this trip special was the people were amazing. Very nice with great service.
This is a beautiful hotel that decorates from unique local artists. Very relaxing atmosphere with excellent food and drinks. And nestled in the center of a small charming town where Mexican artists sell their wares and bargaining is the key. I read the controversy surrounding using the name "Hotel California" and the legal actions by the Eagles. Seems like big Hollywood bullying tactics to me. The hotel was built with that name 26 years before the Eagles had a song, and I might recommend that Don Henley visit this charming establishment before suing a widow and her 2 daughters who are maintaining this hotel as a tribute to the husband and father who lost his life to cancer and realized his dream of rebuilding this hotel before he passed. This is definitely worth a visit and a stay. And order the chicken tortilla soup. The best i have ever had.
We did not stay here, we just stopped for a drink after visiting galleries on a very hot afternoon. Waiter suggested the tamarind margarita and the baked nachos and both were delicious. We were here two years ago and the Hotel shop was way nicer then with an eclectic collection of gifts and even furniture, now it looks like any other store around, but the vibe at the hotel is fantastic!
Love this place. I stay in Cabo but would love to hang out at with his awesome hotel. I asked the question of the owner how she was related to the Eagles. She laughed and said she has no relation. But still a cool place. Will definitely be back!
We stayed here after kayaking and camping for 2 weeks. Wow, it was so relaxing. We throughly enjoyed relaxing by the pool in the beautiful garden settings. Great location, wonderful staff, and comfy rooms. Couldn't have asked for a better retreat. Fantastic stay and so close to everything - we arrived by bus so it was an easy short walk to the hotel.
