Hotel Casa Chameleon Mal Pais4.0 out of 5.0

The view was beautiful, but that was it. We had water, but everything else was a charge. The shower had low water pressure, the bed was hard and squeaky. I would consider this hotel to be very secluded and not inclusive. No tv or phone service. No room service, etc....
My boyfriend and I stayed in both the villa suites Estrella and Ultra and both were absolutely gorgeous. They're different though - Estrella has a longer layout and the big plus here is the outdoor shower and that two of lounge chairs rest in the water in the pool. Ultra has a much larger kitchen, elegantly tall ceilings, a deeper pool, and the bonus here is that there's a huge natural stone bathtub. I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. We loved them both for different reasons! The food was outstanding and we still think about the breakfasts. Everyone was lovely and the only problem with this resort is that once you're in your villa you won't want to leave! If you're driving to Mal Pais be sure to rent a four-wheel drive and make sure you check out the town, it's a charmer and there are a few great restaurants.
I originally came across Casa Chameleon through a travel Instagram page that I follow. For fun I tracked down where this magical looking place was. The picture I saw featured the Estrella Suite which features this breathtaking view of a plunge pool that over looks the jungle with further views of the ocean. I imagined a room like this and with a view like that must be around $900 a night. To my surprise it was nothing even close to that. With that knowledge it took me less than 2 days to book a 5 night stay for my boyfriend and I . I had never been to Costa Rica before and to say the least my expectations were more than met. The journey to reach Casa Chameleon is an adventure in itself. Between 3 flights, including one very small plane, and a shuttle drive it took about 13 hrs from SFO to Casa Chameleon. Travel time would have been closer to 11 hrs if I hadn't allowed so much time to get through customs. I didn't want to risk missing our flt to Tambor and based on other reviews I gave us plenty of time to get through, which ended up taking 10 minutes in the end. Once we landed in Tambor International aka a partially paved runway that is basically a cattle guard, we were greeted by our Shuttle driver who had a cute little sign with my name on it. You can set up the shuttle pick up through Casa Chameleon and I highly recommend doing so. The drive was about 50 minutes through the jungle. The roads are partially paved so its a bumpy ride. Upon arriving into Casa Chameleon , we were greeted by Maria who is part of the front of the house team. While checking in, Jairo who is part of the kitchen staff came over with the House Cocktail and asked if we had any special requests for the kitchen during our stay. I cannot say this enough, the entire staff is incredible. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating and truly enjoyed engaging with you and providing nothing but superb service. After completing check in we were escorted to our villa, Estrella. You guys.... I'm telling you, this villa is not real life. If you have the option to book this villa please consider the extra amount, it is wroth it. It is the most private villa and the views are amazing. On our last day we fortunate enough to see a group of Cappuchin monkeys swing all around the canopy and come up right next to our patio. If you are looking for a destination to relax and forget the rest of the world this is definitely the place to be. I cannot wait to come back and explore more the surrounding areas. Thank you Casa Chameleon, Our trip was one for the books! Special Thanks to the rest of the staff: Victoria,Klarissa,Jeimy,David,Lenin,Keylor,Esteban,Jeko,Emilio,Mario,Roxy,Liz and Vero ** special side note-- The food wassssssss AMAZINGGGGGGGGG! I thought nothing could beat New Orleans food but Mal Pais did. The freshest ingredients and flavors I wouldn't even know how to recreate if I tried.
Casa Chameleon is a 10 Villa resort with views of the Pacific about a 5 minute four wheeler trip from the resort. We stayed in one of the two Villa Suites named Estrella. Wonderfully appointed separate living area, bedroom and huge bathroom with an indoor and an outdoor shower. The highlight of the suite though was the huge patio with private plunge pool that looks out over the Pacific. The staff will fall all over themselves to see that you are satisfied. There is no extra charge for room service which is nice when you want a first class meal off the main menu delivered to your room. Have an activity in mind? They will book it for you. What a great place to stay!
This place was amazing. The staff, the rooms just all of it was perfect. My wife and I could not say enough about it. The Staff was the best I have ever dealt with. The room and views are stunning. Its close to town and the surrounding area is not over run with tourist traps.
This place is the best. Food was awesome, the room was beautiful, the staff was friendly & helpful. This is the perfect place for a romantic getaway. Absolutely perfect for our honeymoon! We would both highly recommend Casa Chameleon for anyone trying to have a romantic Costa Rican trip.
This establishment is in Mal Pais and is up a fairly steep hill. It is not on the beach but close to the beach (c.2+km). To get to a beach, you need to go down the hill and travel just less than 2km. The potholes to get here has a bit of road in between and you do need a mode of transport to get around. So be prepared to rent a car or ATV. Also if you get travel sick, then this may be an issue. Restaurants are generally closed in the really rainy season (Aug to Oct) so likely limited to the eating in the hotel. We found one or two open and they were a welcome change to eating in the hotel (which wasn't bad). Room wise, they (we changed rooms) are clean but open to the wildlife (ants, mosquitoes etc.). Good views, plunge pool, aircon, hammock, comfortable bed.
The attention to detail, the friendly staff, the immaculate grounds and rooms, and last but not least the food are just a few thing that makes this resort hands down one of the best. We would highly recommend! We flew into Liberia then took a flight on Sansa airlines to Tambor, rented a 4w drive car and drove to Mal Pais, a definite truck but absolutely worth it. Keylor and Esteban are two servers who truly care about your preferences and requests. We stayed during the last week of August, also known as the "rain" season, it only rained once every day and that was later at night, making it perfect sleeping weather. We have stayed at 5-star resorts all over the world and nothing compares to this place and the people. We will absolutely be back. Pura Vida!!
I stayed here in August for a week, and I can say this is the best hotel I've stayed at in years. From the hotel itself, to the staff, food, and views, all were amazing. Maria at reception was especially helpful with getting me an atv to get around in, as well as area information. All the staff was friendly, professional, and helpful, from the reception, bartenders, cleaning staff, and management. They were all great. The food was excellent. And the views, you can't beat them anywhere on earth. I highly recommend this hotel. I will be back. Pura Vida
This place is definitely the perfect place! The hotel is jus perfect, the rooms are incredible, the breakfast is amazing, the view is fabulous, everything was so good! But, The road to get to the hotel is hard.
