The rooms in this hotel are in very poor condition and in no way resemble a 4 star hotel. My room had a mismatch of 90's furniture, decaying kitchen which was actually missing the door to its grill, extremely outdated and small bathroom with shower over bath and a 1 x .5 balcony overlooking a car park. The room stunk like old smoke and the plumbing is very noisy. The check in staff were lovely especially as I had a room change from the first one provided due to a leaky toilet. The gentleman who helped me could not have attended to the problem more swiftly. Location is also great if you need to be in the heart of the CBD but my advice is to stay next door if this area serves you well.
I normally stay a bit out of the CBD but figured this was quite close to my appointments so would stay here. The location is pretty decent, walkable to many places you may need or want to go. There are problems with the hotel itself though, and I would hardly call it 4-stars - at least if this is 4-star, 5-star can't be all that great. First of all, there's 15 floors all serviced by two very small lifts. This means you could easily wait 5 minutes for an elevator and/or make 5 or 6 stops on your way down to the lobby, especially at busy times. We were on the top floor, so this was exacerbated greatly. One elevator might fit 5 people max, or 2-3 with bags. You also need a fob to get to your floor. Unfortunately, you only get one fob per room, so having more than one room key becomes useless as you essentially only have one. Compounding the problem is the fact that the fob reader is very temperamental, so you find people swiping their fob 10-20 times hurriedly trying to press their floor before they pass it on the way to someone else. The room is okay, the view was nice, especially at night though the outside of the windows don't appear to have been washed in quite a while. The bed is positioned in such a way that you can't watch TV whilst you're on it which isn't that big a deal, but a little odd for a hotel. The kitchen is a little under-resourced compared to other similar properties, but overall quite functional. The shower head practically trickles water, so don't expect decent water pressure. It's almost impossible to get cold water in the kitchen, and then in the shower less than half a turn of the cold tap completely overwhelms the hot, no matter how hard you turn the hot on. Housekeeping also never changed our sheet, which was dirty to begin with (lipstick stains), never made the bed, and our king bed was fitted with what appeared to be a double bed blanket. The pillows were also terrible, sleeping on a rolled up tshirt would have been more comfortable. Overall, I could've gotten past most of the issues, but I could not get over the smell of feces that permeated the lobby area for three days. When we checked in, the lobby smelled fine, but I soon dreaded the idea of having to spend any time in the lobby as the smell was ferocious. I understand there are toilets in the lobby but were they not cleaned for three days? Were the staff simply happy to work in an environment that smelled so awful?
We enjoyed our stay. We did note a couple of little issues in the shower and did notice traffic noise but we are aware the building is on a 3way intersection and not really sure if single glazing or double? Overall happy with stay.
Great views. Handy location near Hyde park. Very friendly staff. Shower over bath, very old, low ceiling. Poor water pressure. Poor ventilation in lobby and in passageways. Over rated in terms of star rating system.
Expected an apartment (studio 4 star) as per the photo on our confirmation email. The room was a typical hotel room - Everything squashed into one room. When we approached reception we were told we were actually in the better ( Executive) room. WTF. And not to beleive what is on the internet because all pictures are a mish mash of all rooms.Woke up last morning and our bathroom door had locked it self. Thought we were doing the right thing booking direct. Staff were nice enough but won't stay there again.
My husband and I had a quick trip to Sydney and decided to stay in a ‘nicer’ hotel central to where we needed to be for appts. I wish I had of saved myself so much money and stayed Anywhere but here. Very run down, to the point that a cupboard door was hanging off its hinges, the toilet seat would not stay up etc.
Putting the desk near a power point wouldn't hurt, everything else was good. Clean room and regularly serviced and topped up, location was ideal for the office decent restaurants in easy walking range.
Our stank of cigarettes and none of the windows would open to clear it out. The bathroom is outdated and the grout they used to try and clean it up just looked like a half job done. The toilet kept running water so was very loud.
Airconditioner leaked onto the bed and bathroom door would not close.. Reception staff were all friendly but the room was not up to standard. Hyde park gives The Oaks a bad name which it does not deserve. I have stayed at multiple Oaks chains and this is by far not the usual standard.
Comfortable bed, extra blankets and suitable size. Slight disappointment in the shower pressure and quantity of hot water in this room. Prior stay was much better shower. Very good value when purchased on sale.
