I booked two single rooms at what I considered to be a premium rate($174 each) for my son and I for special weekend in Sydney. The rooms we were given were barely big enough to get in with our suitcases. The bed linen was clean but the rooms were grubby. The public areas of the hotel reeked of old tobacco. And the rooms had a decided pong, emanating no doubt from the carpets which were hideous and should have been ripped up long ago. I accept that this is an old building and that you can't do much about the size of the rooms but the overall presentation of this property is abysmal. We couldn't stay. Instead I booked 2 rooms at the nearby Perouse Lodge, part of the same group, where the rooms were cheaper, bigger, and the presentation was significantly better. I could not in good conscience recommend Avoca Lodge to anyone.
Stayed here for 4 nights while my daughter was in the hospital. Location was perfect for this, just a 2 minute walk. Room was large, clean but basic but just fine. Bathroom was large and clean too. Very happy with this place. Aircon worked well and traffic noise was minimal. Parking is a pain, 3 hour parking everywhere around. There are 2 spots in the rear lane way that have no time limits but you have to be quick to get them. It’s not a resort but was perfect for my needs.
Great location. Comfortable bed, spacious room, modern clean bathroom. Friendly, helpful staff. Stayed in Room 204, this was upstairs at the front of the premises. The only downfall was the noise from the traffic.
Ok so I accept that you get what you pay for and the location met my needs for the night whilst my wife underwent surgery in the nearby hospital but there is an expectation that the photos are in some way a representation of the actual accommodation ? The previous week I had stayed in one of their sister properties (Perouse Lodge) and it was excellent so I thought this would be a good sign. I was greated in the lobby by another occupant in a dirty dressing gown with no teeth and a tumbler full of whisky and I prayed it wasn't the manager. My single room (or cell) was like something that I expect they put someone into who has just been released from prison while they find their feet back in society. The carpet was rotten both throughout the hallways and right through the bedroom itself. The walls were covered in marks (maybe a former inmate chalking off the days ?) and other dubious stains. The bathroom was little better and cleaning must have been an optional service that I had failed to pay for. In short I would only recommend staying here if every other hotel is booked up or you are researching for a remake of Shawshank,
Room smelt of dampness, mouldy bathroom. Rude staff knocking on our door at 10am advising we need to check out when we had a late check out. Close to hospital won’t be back will try a different lodge next time
Great location to UNSW, hospital transport, shops and restaurants. Room was clean and comfortable. Will stay again. Room was very quiet, bathroom large and modern. When the light rail is completed this will be an even better place to stay
My daughter had a follow up check up at the Prince of Wales Hospital. We have stayed here before. It is very convenient to visit the hospital as it is just across the road. The place is very clean. We will use this place again. The thing with the Avoca is the floor boards creek a lot. The Avoca is not far from a pub , where we had diner , the food is good. More shops 5 minute walk up the road. Coles ,Woolworths chemists ,whatever you want.
Stayed 4 nights for family reunion. Considering Sydney prices the Avoca Lodge was very good value. It was clean and although decor was dated I found it very comfortable and slept better here than in some 4 star hotels I have experienced. Reception was friendly and responsive. The Lodge is a few minutes walk to cafes and restaurants and also local supermarket.
The bed sheets were stained and room dirty management should hand every guests there policy when they walk thru the door got discharged from hospital and they wouldn't give any money back for the next nights stay absolutely disgusting manager needs more management skills spoken to rudely and hung up on cheap and nasty
When paying over 100 $ a night you at least expect the place to be cleaned. This was a horrible experience. We just booked it as we wanted to extend our stay in sydney for 1 night and all of the hotels in our budget were full. Big mistake from our side.
