The Ptarmigan Inn

The hotel turns the air conditioning off at night if it gets cooler outside. We noticed the small sign at the front desk after we had paid for the room. Three nights our room was HOT. The front desk handed us a small 10 inch fan and told us to place it by the open window. There was nothing they could do -- this was their policy!!!! We walked into our room mid-day and it was off and HOT. It would cycle on and off during the day too. (I mean the unit would shut down completely) In our two week road trip of 4800 miles this was the most uncomfortable and most expensive place to stay. Even our "cabin" located in a campground in the Bad Lands of South Dakota had air conditioning and they kept it running too! So much for the high-fluting Ptarmigan Inn at Steamboat. Had a great time in Steamboat though.

A little disappointed, the first room we checked in was very hot and the A/C didn't work. The person behind the front desk was very quick to bring us a fan to make our stay a little more enjoyable. However it was so hot we ended up switching rooms anyway. This 2nd room although clean had issues as well. The a/c worked some of the time, the electronic door lock worked about half the time, and the TV channels were very distorted. But the biggest thing was the internet. Streaming videos or doing video conferences was not an option. Internet speed was very very slow. However... I will say the Staff was incredible. I give their performance a + . Trying hard to make things right.

Staff was great. The room was a bit disappointing, but worked for a night. The air conditioner and refrigerator did not work in the room. Beds are old and uncomfortable. Bathroom was nice.

Staff seemed bothered that you were even there. Rooms and resort are outdated for the price. I can see how during winter this would be an ideal location since the lift is right outside however, the surrounding resorts seemed better kept.

Management is the worst I've ever experienced and does not care about the customer experience, their reputation, or even money. You can't pay them to help you. Their cancellation policy is draconian, look it up. This place is a tourist trap intent on fleecing skiers. One the other hand the location is slopeside and is fantastic! I'm guessing they are going to sell/renovate/rebrand soon and are just coasting until then.

The hotel is a 'tired' property. Fabric on furnishings in room, lobby, restaurant and bar are all worn. Carpets no different. Housekeeping staff does inconsistent and incomplete work. Our room has 3 light bulbs out...seem simple to fix. Staff incredibly friendly and helpful and the price was unbeatable. The disappointment was more in the athetics.

The staff on duty when we arrived was extremely friendly! The overall property is in need of some updates, and some general maintenance (painting exterior, plant trimming, sweeping up leaves around pool from last Fall, etc.) but for the discounted $ charged for the room, it was perfect. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable.

Ptarmigan Inn is next to Gondola. Walk to Gondola out the door of Hotel. Mountain biking/hiking right outside the hotel as well. Easy drive to downtown or ride the bus.

The hotel needs to be updated from the towels to the furniture to the carpet. Towels were tread bare, carpet had holes, wii fi was not reliable, the breakfast was just OK. On the upside, the pool area was enjoyable and the location was great. However, we would stay somewhere else next time we go to Steamboat.

2 night stay Had to seek staff upon check in, who seemed to be bothered to help us. Maid staff was the friendliest and most helpful. The building could use some maintenance. On the plus side the free breakfast was less than average with 4 day old pastries and bagels.

Very disappointing with the room. It whole place needed to be remodeled.

The room and building is run down. No pride of ownership here. Staff was lack luster. Free continental breakfast was about the saddest I have ever seen. the lobby is ok but the rooms were small, old and dark. If you are looking for the cheapest place to stay on the mountain and nothing else this might be your place.

Location to base and ski in/out are the reason to stay here.

The desk staff could be better informed and less rote in their customer communication. Rooms are fine, AC unit works well and fan runs continuously so you don't freeze then sweat, as I have with some units. Pool is small but fine for kids to get their yayas as out. Quiet. Cold continental breakfast has cereals, bagels, cream cheese, muffins, OJ, good granola bars.

I enjoy staying at this hotel. What a great location and great value!

The staff was very nice and the location was great. There was only one other party in the hotel so it was VERY quite. The room was comfortable and clean.

Had a good trip and the room is what we needed to make it home the next day.

I made the reservation late and got what I believe was the last vacancy at the property. It was a small, dark room, cramped. It appeared that the property had never be renovated. The sink area outside of the bathroom was barely large enough to get my shoulders into. parking was cramped and full. I had to park in a gravel area alongside the building one night. Parking lot was full. TV service was very basic compared to other places I've been. In general, this was the worst room I have ever rented and not a good value for $129.99 per night.

The hotel is no frills--everything you need, nothing you don't. Has the standard amenities pool, hot tub, etc. It's a great location which adds to the value. The decor is a bit outdated, as well as the TVs (no flat screens), but for the location, you don't need anything fancy since you should be skiing/mountain biking. Great, friendly staff!

Once we found the place it was what I expected. Older, definitely a ski in/out sorta place at the base of the mountain. Perfect location to access the village, gondola, mountain biking, etc... Check in was easy despite the front desk being high as a kite. A little funny but a little annoying as well. The room was older but clean. My main complaint was how thin the walls were and how noisy the place was. We were by the exit door and everytime the door would shut our door would vibrate. We could hear the annoying kids next to us because of the adjoining room. Super noisy. So be sure not to get one of these rooms. Overpriced IMHO, should be around 80-100 a night. never tried the cold breakfast.
