Nevsky Hotel Grand3.0 out of 5.0

My usual accommodation choices were unavailable for my last trip so I ventured into the unknown. The 4 stars review average in Trip Advisor and rate of a respectable 150 Euro a night suggested Nevsky Grand Hotel is a safe choice. However my experience is that the only grand thing about the hotel is the time that went by since the last renovation. Rooms, hallways, the restaurant, all look very tired. The bed in my room was very simple, not much comfort. There was no thermostat, only very noisy and old fashioned air conditioner fitted into the window frame. Staff are OK, but no more polite than typically friendly St Petersburg folk. In fact, you could easily mistake receptionists for passers by, as they don't wear unforms and have a rather casual look, some of the look like street musicians. In fact I wouldn't be too surprised seeing the latter in the hotel, as the entrance door is not manned and there are is no hotel card key in the hotel elevator, so any one wishing to play in the lobby or help themselves to guest floors wouldn't have any problems. I'm on the other hand, not planning to venture there ever again...
The hotel itself is average but the location is ideal and the staff was really good! The room was really old fashion and the insulation in between the rooms was very bad . The staff was really helpful and helped us with organizing a boat tour and printing our tickets. We had a good stay overall.
I spent a very nice hourney in the hotel, nice and friendly, as usually. But, as a disable person a would have appreicated a ramp to help me to climb the stairs (outside and inside), and a special way to make my suitcase slide (inside) the stairs (a gentle ramp). I hope to find these "details" when I will come back to my favourite hotel! I would also like to mention a reception staff who were taking care of me during 9 dau=ys of my stay at the Nevsky Grand Hotel, specially Vladislav.
I stayed one night only from 03 to 04 Dec., Room was clean and well furnished , but really tight , even for me as a single traveller . Reception girl was so polite and nice, I came in the early morning, and she directly made for me a quick check in . Breakfast was good for a 03 stars Hotel , Over all, not bad for staying for a short period in St. Petersburg .
It`s a good example of a high quality hotel for a reasonable price! We have really enjoyed beautiful view out of the window, our calm and clean room and a friendly staff at reception! They also serve very delicious food in a restaurant but most of the time we had a meal outdoors. The place has a good location - directly in the city center within 2 minutes walk from the main sightseeings!
It is less than 10 min from Nevsky Prospect station and walking distance from many attractions or close to the Nevsky avenue where one can take a bus or streetcar to everywhere in town. Breakfast offer is generous and sets you off for the day. My room was an small single but had everything I needed. The reception staff were very helpful and available 24x7. Overall a good place to stay
The location is ideal, close to the Nevski Prospekt and main city highlights. The room I had was very basic but still acceptable, the main problem is the noise. Insulation is non existing. You hear everything from the corridor and adjacent rooms: slamming doors, discussions, people coughing or sneezing, etc. Impossible to sleep. I had a reservation for 4 nights, after the second night I changed to another hotel. The first night there was noise until 1.30 AM, at 5.30 AM it restarted. The second night a group came in at 3 AM, another one at 4.30 AM, the noise lasted until 6 AM, shortly after the first guests started to get up, slamming their doors because most probably they were angry, who can blame them? It is maybe a good place for youngsters who want to party until late into the night, but not for people who are busy the whole day and need to get up early.
If only it was possible to give something NO STARS? The entire experience was HORRIBLE. We had pre-booked and payed from Australia months before. We had received a booking confirmation from the travel agent prior to leaving. We arrived at the hotel and they told us they did not have a reservation for us for the 5 nights we had booked and paid. We showed them the confirmation and they said we do not have it. It was cancelled. They gave us a card for a free drink at the cafe in the hotel and we ordered a drink to settle our nerves. We gave them the vouchers and they said "the voucher is not for that type of drink, you will have to pay for these". Went back to reception which is a 1 star space and they said we do not have a booking at all and we do not have a room available for the 5 nights we were going to stay. You can book for 2 nights. Also they were going to call the police if we did not pay for the drinks immediately. As we had just arrived in Saint Petersburg and did not know the city, we needed a place to stay for the night while we tried to sort things out with the travel agent as it was the middle of the night in Australia. We basically did not have a choice, so we agreed to stay for 1 night and had to pay an even higher rate than we paid originally. We were given a room that was right next door to the cleaners closet and the vacuum cleaner blocked our door. The cleaner started banging things and making noise very early too. The room was tiny and to open your suitcase you had to put it on the bed. Spoke to the travel agent in Australia the next morning and they advised the error was at the hotels end and that I would be refunded by the hotel for the night we stayed. First thing in the morning I went back to reception and advised them of the conversation I had with the travel agent and that I should be given a refund. They said they knew nothing about this. It was not the hotels error, they did not have a booking. They asked if we wanted to stay a second night, but we said no. I have since tried to get the hotel to give a refund like I was advised I would get, but they say it is not their fault and there will be no refund. DO NOT STAY AT Nevsky Hotel Grand!
Compared to Station Z 12, is a Palace, but very modest for European standards ,It happened that we were desperate to move from the previous hotel, our "Friend" and guide probably was in connection with the front desk and they charge us $124.00 US, daily for a places that is advertise half of this price, they catch us with the guard down and went for it without knowing the market price of the hotels in the same area. If any one wants to use this place be very careful, you can get a lot better place for the same $$$
Rooms are very poor. I would disagree that this is a 3 star. Reception is not very helpful and are not happy if you have any problems. First room smelt like someone just been smoking in the room. Asked for another room which then smelt of cat urine. Asked for 3 rd room which was better as just smelt musky. Decor very poor , towels given are very small, This hotel is not appropriate if mobility problems as lots of stairs and no ramps and they have the smallest lift. No coffee or tea in rooms. Breakfast is chaotic and sometimes sent away as no room at the tables. Plus side is the staff in the small restaurant / cafe who are friendly and try to be helpful. It is very central for walking around city centre.
