Friendly staff and the room was remodeled but you could tell it was an older hotel

no hot water, water leak over bath tub cover with BLACK MOLD staff very unfriendly STAY AWAY !!

The worst part of the trip was not the hotel but the cab service called by the hotel.

This is a motel, not a hotel. Economical: free parking, free wi-fi, and only $20/night additional for a pet. The lobby looks like it hasn't been remodeled since 1985 but the rooms are fairly updated. Ours was spacious, neat and had all the amenities - King bed, mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, cable TV, ironing board, etc. No safe, though - that would've been useful. There were a couple of deficits in the cleaning which I brought to the chambermaid's attention (in Spanish) and she was very gracious and thanked me. (She was the Sunday cleaner probably the lapses weren't hers.) Also, the desk clerk was at first confused about our online booking and we almost got charged twice. Eventually got things straightened out - I think. Will check my credit card a/c. About the neighborhood: during the day, the area is quietly commercial, but when we got back from a show on Sat. night, we discovered that a couple of presumed ladies of the evening were plying their trade in the block adjacent to the motel.

Not exactly downtown.....in the bad part of town. Not a nice place at all...but the bed was comfy and the pillows were soft. I kept my stun gun on the night stand and didnt leave the room for ice or water. The t.v. was pretty bad...did not shower there either...just closed my eyes at 9:44pm and did wake up til 7am to the musical sound of the maids chattering away out side the door...it was actually pleasant. I got out early and didnt look back. Not recommend if you have a family...or a single woman like me...OK for blue collar types working on construction type jobs...saw lots of people like that.

The front desk lady was very welcoming, even when she was multi- tasking. She made me feel important, answering to my every need.

I'm used to staying at the Marriott or similar hotels, but I couldn't get a room because everything was sold out in San Jose so I had to stay at the Hotel Elan. I wasn't in the room but just to sleep. It was clean, but as another review said this is a motel not a hotel. The front desk staff was very nice and the breakfast was pretty good. I was alone so didn't bother me but my husband would have never stayed here.

The matress sloped toward the headboard so laying on the bed you would get a head rush. Bring your own pillows too. The light bulbs were all super bright and then it was all or nothing, totally dark or extremely bright.

Nothing really stands out about "Hotel Élan". The room was clean. It was a decent room for a one-night stay but I would not stay here to vacation in San Jose.

First there is construction right in front of the hotel. The room had fruit flies, dirty bathroom an unfinished bathtub they give you a nice bucket but have no ice machine.

The room was okay but to call it a hotel is false. The toilet ran most of the night. Mentioned to front desk nothing happened. Bed was semi broken, one corner was lower than others. Walls were very thin and could hear neighbors. Location was questionable.

Although this wasn't what we expected. My friend and I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. They gave us directions to the nearest food joint. The rooms were clean. My only compliant is the water in the shower took a bit to warm up. Other than that this was a good hotel for the price range.

The hotel is in the final stages of a modernization project. My room must have been redone recently, very nice. Clean, comfortable, close to downtown, great hotel especially at this price. I'd stay there again when back in the area.

This was the perfect stay for my business trip. The room was clean and comfortable. The location was PERFECT for my needs and very convenient. I would definitely stay here again for a one night business need.

The hotel name was Hotel Elan, not Howard Johnson. It should have been called Motel Elan, because that is exactly what it was. While the motel was clean, it was old and not located were I anticipated it to be. It was not in the hotel district of First St. that I was familiar with There were people hanging around the front and dogs were allowed to stay in the motel rooms. There looked like people were living in the motel for extended stays or permanent housing. [...]
