Mercure Shrewsbury Albrighton Hall Hotel and Spa4.0 out of 5.0

Set in the countryside approx. 4 miles out of Shrewsbury town, so you need a taxi if you want to go into the town for a meal and drinks. The grounds are very well kept as is the hall itself. Staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was in the stable block, it was huge with a large bathroom and separate shower. The bed was very comfortable. The only drawback was a wedding had taken place during the day and some of the guests decided to sit outside until 2am shouting and making merry. I would have thought the hotel staff would have advised them earlier about the need to be quiet after midnight like other hotels do. However this did not spoil our stay. The leisure complex was very well equipped and the swimming pool was of a good standard. Breakfast was very good with a range of items to cater for all tastes. Didn`t have a meal at night so can`t comment on the restaurant. One suggestion I would make is the availability of a few different real ales in the bar. The only hand pumped one was horrible.
Great location, nice facilities. Did not use the Spa as had no time. The bar was expensive, ouch!!!! £20 for 3 drinks and 1 was lemonade a small glass. Good location to explore Shrewsbury. Would stay there again.
We stayed here last weekend from Sunday night until Tuesday. This was a family gathering as there are some "big" anniversaries this year; a Diamond wedding, a Pearl wedding and an 18th birthday. The hotel is beautiful; the rooms are fabulous and the grounds are stunning. Unfortunately though our room had hot water only in the handbasin in the bathroom. The first night we were there it was fine having a tepid shower as it was a warm day but the next day was quite different; all it did was rain. We spent the day outside on Fenn's etc Mosses, and got soaked which we are quite used to, but then couldn't even have a hot shower afterwards. I did report this but nothing had been done by the time we checked out next morning. The food is good although there was no vegan option. I was also amused (or horrified) to see that in the bar pasta carbonara was advertised as vegetarian but listed pancetta amongst the ingredients. They did make me the pasta with chorizo minus the chorizo, and that was gorgeous. However some in our party had the fish and chips with mushy peas. The mushy peas were delicious but stone cold. They were sent back and took 10 minutes to be returned hot by which time we had all finished our main courses. I also saw in Darwin's Bar (sic) that there were empty glasses left lying around on tables instead of being cleared away which gave the place a bit of a down at heel look. The lift wasn't working the first night we were there either which concerned me as my father in law is 89 and has reduced mobility. This is not intended to be a moan but I think these issues need to be taken on board. It is a beautiful place and somewhere I would be happy to return to, but hopefully without the issues I have listed.
I was really impressed with this hotel; staff very welcoming, room was sumptuous and the food, considering I took the £15 three course dinner was freshly cooked and tasty. The hotel is set in pleasant grounds just a couple of miles north of the town and is easy to find. My only very minor gripe is that the reception could be better sign posted, other wise for the price more akin to a Premier Inn, there can be few to compare in the area. Highly recommended.
We didn't get the best out of this hotel as we were there in torrential rain. In decent weather however the grounds would be lovely. Our room and the breakfast were good - not memorable, but no complaints. We didn't have dinner here as there was a huge party going on but went down the road to the Albright Hussey which was excellent (although they had a big party too).
A perfect 4 star hotel stop off stay between Scotland and London. We were lucky enough to be given a Premier Room at a reduced price, I think, on booking in advance but I can't be sure. A secluded location which seemed subtly to provide good activities for quiet families which created quite a special low key and relaxing atmosphere The room was very pleasant and comfortable. The Spa facilities and massage was good particularly as I don't think that my massage had been pre booked.
We stayed here for 2 nights on a deal break and felt the cost was reasonable for what was included. The hotel is in a quite location, lovely surroundings and a few miles outside Shrewsbury, which is perfect for relaxation or sightseeing. You need to take into account that this a 4 * rated hotel so bar and menu prices will not be cheap. The wine list was higher in comparison to other hotels I have stayed in. The room was nice and quite, comfortable with all the usual provisions of tea making facilities, shower toiletries, iron, safe. Surprised there were no water bottles provided but I put glasses of tap water in the fridge, so not really much to complain about. The bar staff are slow and seem unable to deal with more than one customer at a time but were polite; our bar sandwiches were ok but nothing special for the cost; the prawn and crayfish filling should have been heavier than a basic covering over the bread. The evening dinner was acceptable for the food and portion size but the overall menu was uninspiring, so definitely would not choose to dine a la carte. The breakfast menu offers various choices but is not well advertised - the menu is displayed on the fruit buffet. The spa area is ok but the steam rooms were not in use..only the pool and Jacuzzi. The temperature of pool side lounging is chilly which is surprising as people may be lounging in wet swimwear and I have previous experience of poolsides being warm in other spas. The pool temperature was comfortable. The beauty treatments offered are similar to those you would expect. The rest and relaxation room upstairs provides comfortable lounges and soft blankets - the temperature in here was very cold. Did not use the gym or partake in any exercise classes. Would consider staying here again as we had a pleasant stay and enjoyed the break.
Our group of 34 stayed here in June of this year, and found it to be a great place to relax and recharge our batteries. Some of the interior furnishings from earlier periods have been preserved, which adds to the ambience of the property.
Spacious room, downstairs in ? the stable block. Check-in fine. Hairs in the bathroom and perhaps showing age a bit. Bed was very comfortable and room fine. Breakfast was ok, but perhaps they were shortstaffed as toddler porridge (which I had to ask for, there was no menu) took a while. I asked servery staff about veggie sausages to be told I should order from the waiter at the table but we'd only seen one at the very beginning and they didn't tell us this or ask if we wanted any. Lovely grounds, although the lake is perhaps not as reflective as that picture suggests now. The swimming was fine, although the square shape of pool with limited shallow area was not ideal. The jacuzzi was broken, only doing cold I think. A few problems, but we didn't encounter any terrible ones like some previous reviews suggest - I guess we got lucky with the room (apart from the hairs).
I had lunch in the restaurant with a large group of friends and it was a dreadful experience. Ordering food and drink was painfully slow; the staff seemed to be unable to cope with the numbers and were frantic behind the bar plus there was only one card machine! The food took a while to arrive and then came out in dribs and drabs (in no particular order) and with very long waits in between; people had completely finished their meals at some points. No cutlery was provided so one of the group obtained this from a draw and when the barman was asked for condiments he quickly dashed off before we had finished our request and did not bring enough. When the food finally did arrive it was was nice for the majority. However, the Caesar salads were advertised with boiled eggs and anchovies. The first two Caesar salads arrived with neither of these, then the remaining three had only boiled eggs. These were not cheap either at £13.95! Not worth it at all. We told the bar we were not happy and he was very dismissive so we requested to speak to the manager. Everything was explained to the manager and we were told the boiled eggs had not been cooked in time for the first salads, and were offered a bowl of boiled eggs and a bowl of anchovies. She returned to say they had run out of anchovies and that's why they hadn't been included. It would have been nice to have been told on order! As we were very disappointed we asked for a round of drinks because we had already paid for the food but we were only offered a glass of prosecco for those who had the Caesar salad. After a bit of back and forth with her manager we were provided with one bottle of prosecco and eventually an apology. This is not what I would expect from a four star hotel and I would not recommend dining here.
