Boardwalks and beaches in Seaside Heights

New Jersey’s coastline is filled with cute beach towns and Seaside Heights has to be one of the best. Set north of Long Beach Island, the small boardwalk and sandy beach are up there with ice cream and sea paddling when it comes to summer favorites in this part of the world. Made famous by MTV since it taped the popular "Jersey Shore" series in town, Seaside Heights continues to intrigue both teens and adults. Although small in size, spanning less than one square mile, it offers rides and arcade games at the amusement piers, along with a variety of water activities such as crabbing and fishing.

Things to do
Beach and boardwalk

Seaside Heights is the third most visited beach town in New Jersey. The biggest draw is the public beach, which runs 16 blocks long. Movies, concerts and weekly fireworks all light up the streets with music, color and the stars during the summer months.

A modest boardwalk houses a water park—Breakwater Beach—two amusement piers, arcades, souvenir shops and numerous eateries, all ideal for families. Look up and you will see the Sky Ride, a feature that provides a bird's-eye view of the New Jersey coastline where fishermen once cast their nets.

The Casino Pier on the north part of the boardwalk is home to 40 rides including an antique carousel with hand-carved panels. Cross to the opposite side of the boardwalk for a frightfully fun adventure inside the Stillwalk Manor Haunted House at Funtown Pier. Or take the kids to Lucky Leo's, one of the most recognized names when it comes to arcade games in Seaside Heights.

Dining

Grab a slice of pizza, a carnival treat, or an ice cream cone as you explore the boardwalk. Any cheesesteak lover will be pleased with the famous stands that serve up this specialty sandwich. Pubs and restaurants line Seaside Heights as well: the Boulevard offers well-known Italian and seafood restaurants like Luna Derosa, Klee’s Bar and Grill, and Hemingways Café for evening or lunchtime meals.

Where to stay

There are many Seaside Heights hotels in the area, and smaller motels like the Anchor are especially popular with budget travelers. Most motel rates average between $50 and $100 per night. During peak season, many lodgings require a two- or three-night minimum stay. Luxurious accommodations such as the Palm Villa Suites generally provide pools and balcony views.

Special events
Spring

One of the first celebrations of the year is for St. Patrick's Day, when a parade is filled with Irish floats and marchers. Live bands provide musical entertainment too. In May, catch the annual Jersey Shore Festival with local bands, art showcases, crafts and culinary competitions.

Autumn

During the middle of September, the annual Clownfest occurs, and there is a parade, a slapstick comedy show and colorful displays on the boardwalk. One of the last major events of the season is the “Que by the Sea.” This BBQ competition sees contestants vying for the title of “Best Barbecue on the Beach.”

Best time to visit

Because Seaside Heights is a renowned beach town, summer is the most popular time to visit. Most hotels are reasonably priced, and the temperatures are warm. However, when planning to drive into town, this time of year can be extremely busy, especially on weekends. Traffic jams are quite common, so it is wise to plan a few detours or shortcuts to save time. Some enjoy the winter solitude at Seaside Heights, but few vendors remain open.
