We met nice people and had a good time as couple.... Hotel people are not very friendly but they help when you ask them for. The pool was nice but it could be better cleaned.... The food was ok.... The fun is always in your hands and the rest is up to you! Don't go alone by yourself

We stayed at the La Catalina (Adults Only) during their down-season and we were some of the only guests during our 5 day stay. Upon checking in, they gave us a free upgrade to their King jaccuzzi suite! A full breakfast was included in our rate, which was always delicious. Our favorite breakfast was their Costa Rican rice & beans with eggs and tortillas and a fruit plate of pineapples, mangos, watermelon & bananas. Delicious! We had room 106, which was right off the main dining area. The room was very large and roomy, adequate towels, king bed. The mattress was quite hard, but I think that is normal over there. We still slept ok. The room and bathroom was always spotless every day. The adult pool was open and clean. I loved the sunning beds and the privacy. During the day we would go explore and in the evenings we would read in the lounge while drinking tropical drinks Henry served us at the bar. The service was great and friendly. My husband is a farmer and our host offered to escort him one day on a farm tour. He didnt even want to be paid for his time, he was so delighted to be of service. The down side to this place was that it seemed like its peak performance may have been 5 years ago. Even considering that we visited during down time, there were signs of neglect and deterioration. The gym looked like it hadn't been used in years, as well as the tennis courts and bird aviary. One other negative experience was one day in particular there was a strong sewer smell in our room, which I think was coming in the windows. It may have just been the way the wind was blowing that morning. Besides that, we REALLY loved this place and would go back again. The best thing we did on this trip was a rent a car and explore on our own. Within 20 minutes, Heredia, Alajuela, Barva, & Santa Barbara are all surrounding towns where we enjoyed their markets, town squares, sidewalk restaurants and warm culture. GREAT experience!

La Catalina Hotel and Suites Costa Rica is situated in the mountain area, on 6 acres of lush, green, tropical land, with coffee and banana plantations on either side. There are many outbuildings for your privacy and seclusion, two pools, a hot tub, tennis court, spa and much more. From the veranda of the stately main building you look out over the San Jose Valley with miles of lush green vegetation and breathtaking vista. Inside you will find ornately hand carved pillars, book cases and handrails all done by local artisans of the time. This would be a great setting for weddings, private parties, or corporate retreats. La Catalina Hotel and Suites offers lots of activities too, canopy tours, horse back riding, ATV’s, zip lining, and so much more. The food was great; the party we attended was fun, and the people so warm and friendly. Both management and staff of La Catalina Hotel and Suites deserve acknowledgement and thanks for the courteous, helpful and warm reception we received from them. We can’t wait to go back to Costa Rica; and stay at La Catalina Hotel and Suites. We have already talked to friends about joining us on our next trip. Woo-hoo let the fun begin!

Tucked on the side of a hill in Herredia, with beautifully-tended grounds and a nice swimming pool. Good restaurant in-house and pleasant, if small, rooms. The great view becomes especially apparent at night.

Luckily we ended up taking a cab to the hotel since it would have been hard to find on our own, but it was definately worth it. It was a beautiful hotel done up in hand carved rosewood throughout. The bar/resturant staff was friendly and helpful. The pool and grounds were beautiful and well maintained. I especially liked the mosquito netted beds to lounge by the pool. I enjoyed reading on the back porch in the rocking chairs overlooking the city lights of San Jose. The front desk staff was very helpful in finding us a rental car and arranging for our transport. This hotel is a definite stay on our next trip back. We were very impressed by them letting us check in super super early in the morning with no charge and also the free upgrade to the suite. We were also pleasently suprised to find a garden tub in our room...and enough hot water to fill it! That is not always a given in another country! Overall this is a very nice modest hotel that is quiet and relaxing.

This was out first hotel in our stay in Costa Rica. We arrived late at night from the airport and the GPS in the rental car took us up a steep dirt road. The room was a bit worn with a hard-rock bed and an old bedspread. It was clean, though. There was also air-conditioning, a microwave, and a refrigerator, which were nice. My major complaint was about the hot water. I stepped into the shower and it was lukewarm for a few minutes. It then proceeded to get completely cold. I simply couldn't call the front desk because there was no phone in the room. We were also in a building very far from the front desk. The water was the same in the morning. I did complain and they gave us a free lunch at the hotel restaurant. The food was pretty good. The property is really nice as far as the exterior goes. The view is wonderful and the gardens are really well maintained. I just wish that the same could be said for the room interiors. My review is mixed but I probably wouldn't stay here again in the future.
