Starry-eyed in postcard-perfect San Jose

Toward the southern tip of the San Francisco bay lies the beautiful city of San Jose. When you're traveling to Californian shores, San Jose is a highlight surrounded by the landscapes of the Santa Cruz mountain range—where trails entice hikers to get out their walking boots— along with the Big Basin Redwoods State Park and the sheltered coastline of the bay. Seaside weather makes it perfect for visits at almost any time of year, and it even has its own international airport (SJC), so you can fly straight to the heart of the action. Year-round events present culinary delights, local musicians and more, while the museums and restaurants exude the spirit of life in San Jose.

Where to stay

Guests in the city can choose whether they want to stay downtown, where the excitement and entertainment is, or have a more quiet vacation close to the water. San Jose hotels start as low as $80 per night for standard motels or inns, and if you're looking for a more luxurious stay, there are many more upmarket choices. Hotels in the downtown area or near the bay cost anywhere from $250 to $300 per night.

Things to do
Explore science and art

San Jose has multiple museums that cater to travelers of all ages. Fast forward into the future at the Tech Museum of Innovation, see the style and history of the area at Ainsley House, or take the kids to learn how the world works at the Children's Discovery Museum, where hands-on exhibits include an area where the kids can blow giant soapy bubbles, or visit the Mammoth Zone! exhibit to learn about the giant prehistoric mammals.

Those who prefer stargazing, or want to view the valley below can visit the Lick Observatory. Check their calendar for events to observe these skies through telescopes and even hear from guest speakers.

San Jose Flea Market

The San Jose Flea Market has been open since 1960 and, for over 50 years, the market has been home to a variety of local vendors that come out and sell their wares. While visiting the market, you'll also be able to sample some great food and try fun activities for the whole family.

Whether you're seeking out rare antiques, fine jewelry, or comic books, many treasures and souvenirs can be found at the market. The flea market is open Wednesday and Friday, hosting 300-500 vendors, but if you come out on the weekend, you'll have over 1,000 stalls to choose from. They open early and don't close until dusk.

Nightlife

For those who are traveling to San Jose and looking for a party atmosphere, the city is full of it; downtown San Jose plays host to numerous bars, clubs and cafés. Settings range from sleek, modern nightclubs and lounges to a more laidback approach at local bars, and you'll be able to try wine from Californian vineyards, fruity cocktails, or ales from breweries in the region before dancing until dawn.

Events

Keep an eye out for events taking place in San Jose when you're planning your trip. Some events are traveling through while others are held on a weekly basis. From belly dancing and sangria to beer pong and electronic dance music, there is always something interesting going on. San Jose also has a spectacular local music scene, so you can usually find a small show during your stay, no matter what day of the week it is.
