Hotel Rex San Francisco

3.5 out of 5.0

Recent guest reviews

Overall, I had a good stay (two nights). The room, on the second floor was clean and well maintained. Although there was a little noise from the restaurant below, it wasn't enough to bother me. The Rex has a nice, cozy, classic feel to it. The bar had a pretty good band on Friday, and there seemed to be a regular crowd that knew all the wait staff. The "wine hour" for guests in the evening was a nice touch. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The food service was slow, about 25 minutes for breakfast, and they inexplicably don't serve breakfast on the weekends. Once it arrived, the food was pretty good. There were lines out the door at nearby breakfast places, so this seems like it should be a no-brainer for them. The bartenders, on the other hand, were excellent and really kept things moving. One other nuisance was the hotel's text message notification system. It probably seems nice to text your guests reminders of their upcoming stay, etc. But, if your guests are from another timezone this may end up waking them up in the middle of the night, as was the case with me. Email would be preferable.

The hotel is not a new, modern hotel. However, a somewhat dowdy interior hotel space is more than made up for by excellent, friendly and very attentive staff, including the fantastic hotel bar. Happy Hour is just that, a very happy and good energy space. And I cannot compliment the staff enough: highly professional, attentive, and very helpful. The location is great!

Great location. Excellent staff. Everything else is average or below. Room had a smell. I had to buy an air freshener just so I can sleep without worrying about the smell.

No A/C in our room but we could open the window. In walking distance to a lot of great sights. Would definitely stay again

We had a great time staying here. Nice comfy rooms, friendly staffs, close to all the locations near to union square for very reasonable price.

A very nice, clean hotel by union square within a walking distance from several major points of interest in San Francisco. The rooms are small but comfortable and the level of comfort and convinience you get for the price is quit high. The staff are very accomodating. We planned an only one night stay but ended up staying for an extra night. When I called the lobby to inquire about the possibility of staying one more night, the gentleman at the front desk gave me the price (which was reasonable) but advised me to check online as the rate might have been better. It was better, indeed. I felt like he was looking out for me, as he could have just charged me more and it would still have been more convenient to accept the hotel price rather than check out and look for something else. I will definitely stay there when I go to San Francisco again.

Highly recommend to every body. Clean and hospitable. friendly and professional stuff. Nice restaurant at the hotel. And it is just one block from Union Square and all the shops and restaurants. The hotel has a library where you can take a book and leave your's. No problem with transportation: taxis, Lyft or Uber, muni. But you will enjoy walking. Be prepared for San Francisco weather. Summer is foggy and rainy with strong winds!

Hotel room was spacious and bed was very comfortable. Friendly and fun staff. Happy Hour on the weekends with live music trio in their awesome bar lounge area.

The hotel is basically near the transport system like Bart and muni . Location wise it is in the heart of the city. The paramount problem with this room that I've got during my stay has no Aircondition . I was told just to open the window but unfortunately could hardly be open because it's old. The room is small and noisy area. The smell of the carpet is not good.

A memory maker, I will return! Everyone should give it a try!

One of the best boutique hotels in the city. Amazing staff, cozy bar with some good wine/cocktail selection, clean rooms. A complimentary glass of wine at the arrival was definitely a big bonus! Loved everything about this hotel.

I loved this hotel Near Union Square Great staff, beautiful rooms Happy hour with free wine SO worth the money

The staff at Hotel Rex is second to none. Always welcoming, always helpful and completely cater to the needs of the business traveler. Great happy hour events and walking distance to all things Union Square.

Everything was great! The staff is very friendly. Traveling SOLO the room space is fine. The location is great, you can walk to every location. They have a daily happy hour which they give us a free wine.

Good location, but the hotel false advertises its amenities. Would not stay here again.

The Hotel Rex was in a perfect location only a few blocks from Union Square close to terrific restaurants, like Scala's, Jean d'Arc, and the Dome at Neiman Marcus. The library style bar is terrific the decor seems a little dark . The overall experience is great and they were truly dog friendly to my service dog. A great buy for a terrific location.

The hotel is quaint, well maintained, and in an excellent location. Walk to Union Square. Catch the cable car to Fisherman's Warf a block away on Powell. Have a glass of wine in the Library. The staff members were cordial and pleasant. I definitely will stay at the Rex my next visit.

Was great staff was able to answer all the questions and recommend the best places to see and restaurant for dinner. The hotel is very well located in union square.

The Hotel Rex provided a relaxing atmosphere for my spouse and I. We wanted a location central to the muni system and a variety of restaurants. The staff at the Hotel Rex are extremely accommodating and make you feel like part of the family. All of the staff seemed knowledgeable about the area and were helpful with their input as we planned each day's activities.

Right in the heart of Union Square, offering a very friendly staff. The rooms is a little small, but compared to other reviews of SF City hotels, it may be an adequate size. Ditto for the elevator, pretty tight quarters. The comfort, cleanliness, and the staff's attention far exceeds any other 'naggy' comment regarding room size. The cherry on the cake was the two beach cruisers available for use by hotel guests. My wife and I saw the City from a perspective available to few tourists (unless you decide to pay an arm and a leg to rent a bike for the day). The informality of taking the hotel's bicycles on a spin around the Embarcadero through the City's many neighborhoods made our stay at Hotel Rex second to none.
