Bright seasonal colors paint Salt Lake City year-round

Nestled in a valley and surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, Salt Lake City is the largest town in Utah. The Great Salt Lake, once admired and forever immortalized in the work of Ansel Adams, sits just to the northeast of Salt Lake City.

A perfect blend of city life and rural activities, the town offers countless hikes, beautiful lakes and the proclaimed best snow on earth. Whether you're on the hunt for beautifully-designed architecture or some of the world's most picturesque mountains, Salt Lake City is an ideal destination.

What's the weather like?

The weather is beautiful year-round in Salt Lake City, if you don't mind a little snow during the winter. Summers reach highs of about 90 degrees during the peak, never too hot to go exploring what the surrounding mountains have to offer. During the winter, temperatures have a low of approximately 27, perfect weather for enjoying coffee and hot cocoa by the fireplace inside one of the many nearby ski resorts.

The fall seasons are gloriously beautiful, with leaves of every imaginable color falling from the trees that line the streets of an architecturally wondrous city. Enjoy walks through quaint shopping centers like those in the Sugar House area.

Best time to visit
Summer

Although Salt Lake City has something to offer during any season, the summer is one of the best times for festivals. The Twilight Music Festival, featuring cheap concerts within the downtown park, occurs every Thursday during July and August. During the mornings and afternoons, this same park hosts a farmers market during the mornings and early afternoons.

Aside from the many festivals, the summer is also the perfect time for exploring the many hiking trails through canyons and around the lakes surrounding Salt Lake City. Some of these nature spots most loved by locals are Donut Falls, Little Cottonwood Canyon and Red Pine Lake. All of these hikes are small enough to take a break from business for a day filled with nature and exploration.

Winter

The arrival of winter is also a great time to visit Salt Lake City. From late November to early June, ski resorts are open. Whether you choose a season pass or a weekend pass, most Salt Lake City hotels will usually offer discounts or shuttle services to ski lifts. Salt Lake City's downtown area has free parking during the month of December for Christmas celebrations.

Downtown is decorated with beautiful lights during the holiday season, making walks between business buildings, hotels and shopping venues nearly magical. The Gallivan Center gets turned into an outdoor skating rink during this season as well. With a hot cocoa and coffee stand right next to the rink, bring the novelty of this season into full effect.

Where to stay

Quality Salt Lake City hotels can be found in many different districts. If you're looking for a more city-based experience, downtown is a great place to stay. Pub crawls, night clubs and malls are all within walking distance of Salt Lake's largest business buildings. Downtown is also perfect for anyone interested in history and keen to study the local architecture, as most of the best historic buildings are within walking distance of downtown hotels.

Cottonwood Canyon is a great place for a nature lover to stay. Sitting right where the mountain reaches the valley, the view of Salt Lake Valley from these hotels is beautiful. Because Cottonwood Canyon is on the east side, these hotels usually offer west-facing balconies. This way, guests can enjoy their evening meals with beautiful views of the sunset across snowcapped mountains.
