Hotel San Remo3.0 out of 5.0

Spent a week towards the end of the season at this hotel (which is probably why the decor needed a little tlc). The hotel is situated mid way along a side street a stones throw from Termini so the location is convenient for access to transport or walking to the major sites. Via Massimo d'Azeglio is poorly maintained and badly lit, but to be fair that goes for most Roman side streets. There are plenty of cafes/restaurants nearby. We opted for b&b so were able to fill up on the hotel breakfast - self service, but eat as much as you like. Rooms were fine, but I have echo other reviewers in pointing out that the beds were quite hard (is this an Italian thing?). Staff were friendly and helpful when approached (although the hotel bar opening rimes were dictated by there availability). For those not inclined to climb the stairs be warned that there is only one very small lift for guests that is restricted to three persons at any one time! Due to the trip advisor rating system I have to chose between 'average' or 'very good', to be absolutely fair I rate this hotel between the two at good.
The stay was nice. Since we wanted to meet Brazilians to share the trip to the Port for our cruse, there was no facilities form the hotel desk. We knew there were several Brazilians for the same cruse in the Mediterranean...
This wasn't the hotel we originally chose but our travel agent stopped working with our original choice and moved our booking here, it was in the same area so didn't see a problem - until we arrived. The lift is extremely rickety and slow, we only used it when we took our luggage up to the room, it felt as if it could break down at any time. There were holes in the floorboards and curtains. The bathroom window had no blinds or curtains. The room we booked should have had a bath tub as stated on the website - no bathtub was found in our room. Our bathroom was infested with ants so we had to change room, our new room didn't have a bathtub either and had broken - smashed and dangerous looking - plug sockets, we also went an entire night without hot water so had to take cold showers the night before our early morning flight home. Staff were very unhelpful and stated the hot water would be back in "20min", we waited three hours, heading back down to the front desk every 30min or so along with other guests to be told once again "20min". We complained to our travel agent throughout the holiday and on our check out date they sent an agent to check out the two rooms we'd stayed in. The hotel was so bad our travel agent has actually given us compensation.
The hotel is three blocks from Termini train station, two blocks from the City Site seeing Tour Bus stop, therefore, close to everything. If you like to walk, like we do, it is super centrally located. We walked to la Via del Corso, la Bia Veneto, etc. the staff is great, the rooms are clean. I enjoyed my stay very much.
Location excellent. Staff more than helpful. Decor needs a bit of attention! Rooms adequate and we only used them as a base for somewhere to rest and sleep. Breakfast of croissants and continental meat/cheese if so desired. Coffee not hot enough on day 3, but better on day 4. Lots of trattorias nearby for eating in the evening. Lift a little slow but at least there is one. All in all a very good base for exploring The Eternal City.
I picked this hotel because it was cheap, close to the station, and had a breakfast included. we used this hotel as a base only. from here we walked everywhere... central station 5 minutes colosseum 10-15 minutes trevi fountain 15-20 minutes Vatican about 1 hour. I personally found the staff helpful and polite... the breakfast was limited but again we didn't pay a lot so to be expected... I had a cheese roll to keep me going... yes the decoration is a bit old fashioned but I personally didn't come to rome for the colour of the hotel wallpaper... my wife found the bed uncomfy... I had a good night's sleep.. this is the kind of place you would stay with the school on a school trip and in fact there was a group of English school kids at the time we stayed. all in all you have to be realistic... I paid like £300 for 2 nights here including British airways flights for 2 people... if I wanted to go 5 star it would of added a lot of money to the cost of the holiday...money that I instead spent on the tickets to the attractions. in my opinion if you are looking for a cheap base close to the attractions and are realistic about what you've paid... this could be your place... if rome is your dream destination and you want it to be special then this is probably not for you.
our room was 'battered' and tired looking. the bath was pitted and there was no non-slip mat. I slipped badly getting into the bath and was met with disinterest by the staff. the breakfast was edible but bland and certainly did not look like the photos on here! the cheese and spam was unvarying, and certaily not the lovely looking platters in the pictures here. We attempted to use the bar, but failed as no staff were avalible. The location is excellent and close to Termini station with easy access to the Metro and mainline trains.
After all night travelling and arriving very tired and hot, a young female receptionist told us that as there was no water on a whole floor, we would have to go to another hotel. I asked to see management as our trip was booked 3 months in advance and they had our details but hadnt let us know. Another male receptionist arrived and told us we should go to the other hotel. I askex to see the room we should have been in. It was dilapidated but had water!!!! I asked why had we been told that the room had no water when there was water in the taps. The receptionist (male) was very rude and I had to take issue with his attitude as very rudely spoken too. We checked the other hotel- a much nicer hotel and staff. I wouldn't stay in San Remo hotel if THEY paid me! Do not waste your money. Still no manager.....and rudest staff I've ever met.
stayed here for 4 nights 14th/18th Sept. pros - close to termini - within walking distance of atrractions - clean room - windows opened wide cons - we were in room 108. a.c. even though on highest setting still work. toilet seat was loose so every time you sat you slipped. reported it second day. still not fixed. beds very uncomfortable. ours had wooden legs and one was crooked so was not sturdy. staff quite rude on reception. rooms need a good redecoration and new furniture. breakfast very basic was just edible. all in all I know you get what you pay for but definitely not 3*. would not come back here again. we assumed we were in disable room because of push bars on door and bathroom door and the high toilet!
Good clean hotel fresh laundry every day we were there, helpful and friendly staff. Breakfast was standard contineltal ok if thats what your used to us being scottish found the meats and cheeses a bit weird for breakfast. Termini metro, train and bus stations are about a 5 min walk from the hotel, nice little local resturant a 2 min walk to the left as you leave the hotel puddings are amazing.
