The Reef Playacar All Inclusive Beach Resort

3.5 out of 5.0

Recent guest reviews

The beds were hard as rocks and the bathroom was in need of significant repair (including the ants running all over the counter and tub). No nightlife to speak of. The staff was friendly and helpful, especially those at the marina.

Personal agradable todos muy atentos y amables me encanto

We just got back from the Reef Playacar and had a great time. The best part about this resort is the beach! Plenty of lounge chairs & umbrellas. The wait staff catered to you and food was very good. There is a grill by the pool that serves cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pizza, etc. There was the buffet and an Italian restaurant and a Mexican restaurant. The portions at the 2 restaurants were a little small. Fine for me, but my husband was always hungry and looking for more. The rooms could use a little updating, but patio/balcony private. If you can, stay in the buildings closest to the pool/beach area. Pool bar was awesome and definitely check out the spa...best massage ever! Can't wait to go back!

I selected the superior room which came with free WIFI. Worth every penny! Room was average size but had everything we needed. Large bathroom and huge shower! The hotel grounds were immaculate and beautifully landscaped. Felt like I was in the jungle because of the lush green plants and trees. Staff was incredibly professional and very nice! Wide variety of food and the desserts were to die for. The beach on this property is absolutely breathtaking.

Been going here for years! Still great. tried other resorts and we keep coming back to the Reef!

It was good experience. We liked the set up and our room was comfortable and the people were very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is nice and the food is ok. The service is good. The variety of meals is pretty good. The beds aren't very comfortable. It would be nice if they had more staff at the front desk.

The good: We LOVED the beach here. Beautiful, calm water, and the staff works to remove seaweed so it's nice and clean. The hotel itself is beautiful, with nice pools and pretty scenery. The room was nice and clean, and the AC worked well. We also really enjoyed the Italian restaurant, which had great food and really nice service. Arael and Julio were great bartenders. The location is great, as it offers a calmer, less crowded beach but is still an easy walk to downtown. The bad: I had read other reviews complaining about birds getting into the buffet, but it was even worse than I had thought. Crows are constantly flying onto the buffet where they sit and eat directly out of the trays of food. Staff walk by and look at them, but make no effort to chase them away. If staff aren't willing to keep the birds off of the food, then the hotel needs to put covers on all of the food. This is disgusting and a health hazard. You also are unable to put your food down on the table to get up to get a drink, because you'll come back to birds eating out of your plates. We also noticed that when a used setting is cleared in the buffet area, any silverware that appears unused is left on the table for the next person and only utensils that are on the plate are changed out. This is also gross and unhygienic, as you can't be sure if those utensils were actually used and touched or not. It seems like this hotel must not be a very happy place to work, because most of the staff seem miserable and

Good things 1. Beach 2. Easy to navigate 3. Some of the food 4. It's 10 min to the city of playa del Carmen Bad things 1. Pool is small and dirty 2. Most of the food is low grade and made everyone sick 3. Alcohol quality is extremely low 4. they try to sell you a time share when you get there...come onnnnnn 5. Their wifi is sooooooo bad. Paid for 5 days and it maybe worked for 3 hours. Even when it's working is so slow that you can't even use it. 6. Overall the service was pretty weak. I've been to much friendlier, cleaner, better quality places. Bottom line: Had a great trip because I was there with 12 friends. But I'd never go back in a million years. Choose another hotel and save yourself the dirhea, stomach pains and bad service.

The bed was comfortable and room was clean, but so much noise from other rooms couldn't sleep-walls to thin. food was terrible and the service was worse. they ran out of plastic cups and had to go gather dirty ones laying around pool and beach area to wash before they could pour your drink. they acted like it bothered them to order one and the quality of drinks was poor. service in buffet was lacking by not even being able to get water refilled. room wasn't clean the second day and had to call down for more coffee and bottle water and they never showed up. internet and access to room safe was extra money

ROOM - Same as others FOOD - Much Better than others DRINKS - Limited alcohol choices GROUNDS - In jungle setting better a break from sun is good AMENITIES - Same to slightly better than others BEACH - Same PRICE - Same but, at roughly $ 50/person more the good food was worth every penny more

We stayed here and woke up to a 6 a.m. wake up call to discover bed bugs crawling all over the white bed spread. I was able to capture them and take photos. Management did not address, follow up or talk with us about this incident. My daughter was completely eaten up from her feet up with large itchy red welts.

At the beginning of the trip the guy that welcomed us, kept wanting to meet with us for some kind of membership. The location was great, greenery everywhere. Lunch just needed to be a little updated, and the kind of drinks available they tasted like pure alcohol. The gym was moldy and smelly but other than that it was okay.,

When we arrived to hotel there was no record of our reservation, that took a hour to figure out the we were lied to about excursion prices, promised free dinner voucher and never received, told we would get free WiFi and a complimentary bottle of champagne, never received, pool was dirty, food was just ok, staff was very friendly, beds were terrible very uncomfortable ...I would return to Playa but I would probably try another resort

My entire trip and stay was awesome. I will be going back next year, and would recommend this vacation spot to friends and family. My only gripe was all the little kids playing around the pool bar, and splashing pool water into our drinks.

The hotel was clean and friendly. The grounds were well kept and had beautiful jungle vegetation. The only downfall was that there is a buffet and 1 al a carte restaurant. The other restaurant is a surcharge. The food was excellent. Lots of fun at the pool bar and great drinks.

My husband and I stayed at the Reef for our honeymoon and had a wonderful time! The staff were so friendly and accommodating, they even remembered our names!! The food was pretty good at the 2 restaurants on the resort, the buffet was okay. Our bed was hard as a rock but we were on the beach most of the time anyways. The beach was very clean and you could walk to downtown in about 20 minutes. The only bad thing were the people trying to sell their not a timeshare timeshares.

The staff is very accommodating and friendly. Loved the location of this hotel.

Beautiful beach location. Small-scale resort with only 200 rooms, so less walking than at most other Riviera Maya resorts. Decent variety of food at buffets, typically well-prepared. Ample beach chairs with umbrellas as long as you claim one before 8am. 2nd trip, likely will go back as good value for location.

when we arrived we weren't sure about the resort as there was no wifi included so I though that would be an indication of a poor hotel. I was so wrong - it was a fabulous trip. The food was so good - especially the buffet. The staff are outstanding. My only 'complaint' is that the beds are small (double) and with two preteen boys - was a bit much to have them share. We got a cot which worked out great. 15 min walk or $10 USD taxi to town to shop. Felt very safe the entire stay. We will be back - one week wasn't enough though - next time it will be at least 10 days.

Dear Orbitz, We would like to thank you for sharing your experiences. We always make our best effort in making feel our guest special and valued during their stay. Certainty, it appears we did not have the opportunity to fulfill this during your time with us and would like to express you our most sincere apologies of the behalf of the entire staff of the Reef Playacar. We are sorry to know that you got sick in our resort. We daily strive to meet all the international standards required and all hotels in this area are constantly being inspected by an International Standard company called Cristal. There are measurable standards that need to be replicated in all properties with no exception. These requirements range from quality and brand standards, to food safety and hygiene. This company consultants and auditors work with hoteliers to set standards and benchmark performance in real time. Once the standards are agreed then the E-Cristal system is implemented in the hotel and the audit process begins. Audits are conducted monthly to ensure that every aspect of the system is operating effectively. Where issues are identified, recommendations and assistance are provided to ensure continual improvement. Regular food hygiene training is provided to ensure that employees are fully aware of best practice and can fully support this system. Concerning the condition of the pool, we would like to inform you that we are encouraged to maintain and clean our facilities constantly. We will consider your comment and would like to ask you kindly to excuse any inconveniences that may have arisen. We hope that you will change your mind and provide us with the opportunity to host your holiday again in the future so we can treat you with the level of excellence that you truly deserve and that you will change your perception of the resort. Kind Regards
