LUX* Saint Gilles

The hotel is in a lovely setting, adjacent to the safe coral laden lagoon, within walking distance along the beach of St.Gilles. (well an hour along the beach past bars and restaurants packed with locals barbecuing !) Facilities are excellent with nice comfortable rooms in the gardens, good food in a choice of restaurants and quietly effective staff. On the beach there are good quality sun beds, fantastic bean bag loungers, and a variety of free water sports available. The use of free snorkelling equipment allows even novices to snorkel around the lagoon safely. The swimming pool is large and great for swimming more actively. Nearby there are good dive/ snorkel centres from where we amazingly were able to safely snorkel with hump backed whales, supported by environmentally aware professional instructors. Other trips - all arranged in the hotel via the friendly and supportive Patricia - included 4x4 trips around the still active volcano area and the high mountains around Cilaos... well worth the costs with wonderful included lunches (and rum cocktails) on both days. The only downsides were that the restaurants were not always open, a particular issue if you wanted something light as the bar meals ended at 6pm, plus extras, e.g. wine/ beer/ snacks were expensive

Very nice place. People are very friendly and the scenery is beautiful. Rooms are very clean and everything that you need to make it a very comfortable stay. If you go make sure you go long enough to go experience everything the island and hotel has to offer as we realized that we were quickly running out of time and did not get to do everything we wanted. Also if you would like to snorkel rather bring your own as the snorkel gear is not in the best condition. Another thing was the taxi's are very expensive and some place you would like to explore is only reachable by taxi so take enough money to cover for transport. But all and all it was a very nice stay and would definitely recommend it to everyone.

We stayed at Lux for one week while participating in a conference. The hotel design is quite charming and the location is very good with a beach on the lagoon. The water activities are not fantastic but adequate. A bit more attentive service on the beach would not go astray. The pool and public areas are well maintained and there is plenty of parking. The rooms are maybe a bit tired and more suitable in a 4 star hotel but they are clean functional. The staf is pleasant and generally they make an effort to look after the guests. The conference facilities are good and adequate for the purpose. And that is for the good news. The problem that really lets this hotel down is THE FOOD. Very unexpected on an island that is essentially France. If you stay and the hotel and you want to eat in the resort make sure that you book ALL YOUR MEALS THE FIRST NIGHT. The hotel has 2 restaurants and a bar but not always open. Even if they are open they seem to always be booked well in advance and the food is not the best. The menu is very similar in all 3 locations and the quality is very average. Our first night we did not know that we need a reservation and we were sent from one to the other with everything booked. After a long wait we finally got a side table in the bar, in front of the kitchen and we ordered steak. What we received was a piece of meat with lots of fat and so hard that it was almost not edible accompanied by a very small basket of soggy fries. One of the worst plates of food that I ever had in a restaurant. Next day we booked and ordered seafood....we received 3 pieces of undercooked calamari with the same basket of soggy fries....we left half on the plate and departed. For the rest of the stay we decided to eat outside the hotel. For us the food let this hotel down.

The perfect place to relax and feel pampered. The hotel oozes peacefulness, beautiful gardens and pool. The position directly on the beach adds to the magic of this hotel. The staff go out of their way to be friendly. All this guarantees a marvelous holiday.

The Lux is a Reunion 5* rated hotel. From what we read and from what we heard whilst out and about on Reunion, this is one of the best hotels on the island and I have no reason not to believe this. My opinion that it was good, but not great. The amenities range from 3* to 5*, and you have to accept being surrounded by stray cats when eating dinner and that's just not in line with 5* expectations. The one exception is their "Orangine" restaurant which was definitely 5* and unfortunately showed the others up more than it should have. My wife is keen to stress that the room cleanliness was excellent, and she is quite particular about that, so again very well done to the hotel for that. The hotel is not as big as I was expecting and did have a more corporate feeling than anticipated, but it is situated on a lagoon which virtually none of the other hotels are, so the setting is definitely a plus. Airport transfers are not cheap (we were quoted nearly 80 Euros each way for a 30 mile trip by the hotel) where as renting a car was about £200 for a full 5 days which, if you are comfortable doing, is a much better experience, practical to visit the rest of the island with and if used, considerably cheaper than getting taxis. There are too many early 20 somethings on short term uni work experience that are customer facing. They were all pleasant and helpful, but I could not feel that the hotel was trying to be cheap in their staffing and I was being short changed a little for my 5* hotel / cost. We were visiting on our Honeymoon, and if you take advantage of their Honeymoon offer, don't expect all that is shown. The fruit basket in the room turned out to be an "optional extra" when we asked why it wasn't in the room, we never received a "Honeymoon Cake" and the cooking class was offered but only if we took it in the middle of a day which would have meant missing out on seeing the island on that day. My mistake was setting 5* expectations in line with Mauritius hotels. This it is not (maybe a Mauritius 3 - 4*), but I think within the confines of Reunion Island, it is probably up there.

We had an amazing stay here, staff were helpful and friendly, especially Patricia at the concierge who helped us organise visits for our trip. The food in all the restaurants was great and the room was extremely comfortable and clean.

We spend 11 days in Lux* Saint Gilles and we had a wonderful stay there. Room is nice but quite standard, not very big as we have a standard room with an extra bed for our chid . Very comfortable bed with a nice balcony. Nice pool but a bit cold. Beautiful garden, very good restaurants especially the gastronomic restaurant is up to michelin star standard ! The lagoon is beautiful !! We are satisfied with the wonderful service in this hotel, we are 5 stars hotels and relais chateau travellers, and we found the staffs particularly professional and friendly and very polite including the cleaning ladies, reception staffs, restaurants staffs, bars staffs, pool staffs.... we felt like that we were in a hotel of Relais et Chateau and it was a great pleasure !! We highly recommend this hotel.

A wonderful place with a nice garden, where you feel immediately well. The hotel is located directly on the lagoon and has a nice swimming pool. Rooms, even the standard ones are very pleasant. Staff is absolutely wonderful and helpful. Dining or having a drink in the bar close to the beach is just great. The whole family was sad to leave the place and willing to come back as soon as possible! If you want to sleep well during week-ends, ask for a room remote from the restaurants: there are frequent wedding celebrations and parties. If I wanted to be a bit quibbling, I would complain that breakfast napkins are in paper rather than fabric, which is surprising in a five-star hotel, that car parking slots are a bit narrow and that bathrooms are not very large. I would also say that some hotel renovation will be necessary in a close future.

On arrival the colonial style of the front entrance and reception area gave an extremely positive first impression however we then waited for half an hour before being shown to our room which whilst clean was tired and not what We had been expecting from the brochure and official rating. That said, the quality of the food was very good, with excellent breakfasts and a wide selection at the buffet. We ate in one of the other restaurants, again the food was good. The location is very good on the edge of a lagoon from which we watched whales breaching.Overall, with some work on the rooms the hotel would live up to (my expectation) of its official rating.

So LUX was one of the three hotels we stayed at during our trip at La Réunion. We chose it due to the reviews on TripAdvisor and had never heard about that brand before... Well to summarise our experience, we are now checking if there is a LUX in all the countries we are visiting... LUX was the best discovery we have made in a very long time. The staff was simply amazing, extremely attentive to all your needs and considerate. We were worried that the hotel would be too big for us because we don't like resort but we didn't feel overwhelmed by the number of people. They know how to make you feel special... All restaurants were good (with a special mention to their gourmet restaurant Orangine) and the choice for the breakfast was extensive! The room was nice (but a little bit dark to our taste) and quiet. The pool is big and they have an amazing beach. We also had a massage which we both enjoyed. I can only recommend that hotel if you go to La Réunion and have enough budget!
