We actually were accommodated at the Abitta Boutique Hotel next door because by the time we traveled the El Canario was being renovated. It’s a 4-star hotel.

The staff was amazing and super friendly. But the property isn’t like the picture shows. It’s not on the beach front nor does it have a pool. Breakfast was mediocre. I wouldn’t stay again.
Every employee was very nice and welcoming. The room was clean and convenient but outdated. Loved how close the hotel is to the beach and the main strip of restaurants and stores.
For a motel that offered a quick last minute stay ... it was pretty average in a standard kind of way. Nice that they offer access to the pool on a neighboring property although couldnt use due to weather. Continental breakfast that was included and is also a nice touch.

The hotel is in terrible condition. The elevator is scary and stopped working during the visit. The breakfast was horrible, I went elsewhere instead. The only good thing about the hotel is the staff which is very helpful and friendly.
Rooms were right next to construction so mornings were horrible. Rooms smelled mildewy and gross
This hotel was old but the staff is very friendly. I love that they offer breakfast and pool access next door. My stay there was nice, the room came with a balcony. Everything near by is walking distance.
Probably one of my worst experiences in a hotel ever. There's a $100 resort fee for no reason with really zero amenities. The pool and gym shown in their pictures are of the hotel next door. Our first night there our bathroom wasn't working and we had to pull the chain just to flush the toilet. Then we had an issue with the TV in our room for two nights where another TV had to brought in from another room. Brought it to the attention of the property manager and ultimately nothing was done. Lastly there's construction 🚧 being done literally right next door. I definitely felt scammed for what I paid. Maybe wave your resort fees to compensate for all these inconveniences...
The property itself was about what I expected for the money in terms of it being dated and worn. My room itself was less nice than I expected--I had a penthouse suite, and by the photos, I was under the impression I would have my own area of rooftop patio, but it is, in fact, communal, so sometimes when I wanted to relax there were kids from the other rooms walking through or hanging out making a lot of commotion. In terms of the area around the hotel, there is construction right next door that starts at 7 a.m. and goes on all day, and my room faced that construction--I feel like there should have been a deep discount for that circumstance. The breakfast is at the next door hotel, and it was great--a full buffet of everything anyone would want for breakfast. The parking is tricky--if I were to do it over again, I would not rent a car but rather catch a cab to and from the airport and arrange for rides to far-off sites I wanted to visit. The hotel is within long walking distance of sites like Old San Juan, which was fine for me (I walked over there and back 3 times during my stay to avoid having to figure out parking for my rental car in OSJ and then back on the streets near the hotel--the ramp is close but something like $20). That said, OSJ wouldn't be walkable for someone who is out of shape. There were many restaurants nearby and beach access (though the beaches are pretty narrow--I think hurricanes might have washed them away a couple years ago). Friendly, helpful staff.

Lots of construction around. The road was blocked a lot, noise from early morning. No food for breakfast, no amenities, extra charge at checkin. Overpriced. Do NOT recommend.
