Royal Phala Cliff Beach Resort and Spa3.0 out of 5.0

Visited this place seeing it was a 3-4 star resort. Once it may have been but today it needs much cleaning, TLC, and general maintenance. Found a lot of black mold in our room. Balcony door didn't work well, pool was quite dirty, and NO ACCESS to the beach. It was a 1.5 meter drop to 'access' it. Breakfast is classic Thai - some thai dishes, cereals, juices, salad, toast. Service was less than adequate. My family and I will not be staying here again. Not worth the even affordable cost. We checked out early actually when we did try it.
Was there today with two nights reservations. It's very far from city. Once in room, it smells bad, mosquitoes etc... Not clean hotel. The reason to go there was the beach for swimming. There is really no beach per say. Once in room, you can see big garbage, the send is full of detritus, it's disgusting and the management of the hotel should have addressed this. You definitely can't swim there. We left less than an hour after arrival. So bad experience.
I went to this place for business and spent 2 nights there. I must say that is enough to make my decision in never return. The hotel looked spacious with fancy swimming pool with panoramic view from the balcony, facing the beach. We arrived before the check in time at 14.00 pm so we decided to have lunch, which was ready straight at 12. You can't have it before that. However, until around 15.00pm the rooms were still not ready and among our members, there were a lot of complains for rooms' quality. My room, for example, lamp light was broken, towels were smelly (not with fragrance or detergent, I can assure that), and the provided coffee cups were filthy. Actually, every cups and glasses in this hotel are filthy, to be exact. There was prominent milk stained on each glasses. Food are edible, but I still do not know why the staff couldn't refill them in time or make an effort to refill anything at all. So many staffs were idling around the canteen while the guests were also idling and waiting for food. Anyway, you can't really expect a good service from the staff. You can't expect them to speak to you properly or even listen when you want to make an order for drinks. And they won't tell you if they can't or won't arrange anything for you. Such as, you can ask for an on-the-go cup of (tasteless) coffee. About 30 minutes passed and they gave you a dine-in cup and said they couldn't find any plastic cup. You can order a room service but you can't expect them to pick up a used plates even you put it in front of the door. Until we checked out it was still there from the first day. It probably stayed there for a time because we saw it as we check in our room. Good thing is the beach. This hotel is beachfront. You can use the elevator to go down 5 stories for the beach. They didn't have any water activity equipment or a beach chair, so make sure you bring yours if you want a water activity. Also bring your torch because they don't normally turn on the light when it is dark at that building. It could be quite dangerous, so don't go to the beach alone at night. The hotel is nowhere near any convenient store. You can't walk to the nearest minimart. All you can do if you don't have a car is to use their limousine service which is about 100 baht for a one way trip no matter how far you want to go. I had the impression that they don't have enough staff because it took almost an hour of waiting until the car arrived. They couldn't tell you as well about when will the car arrive. The reception was very nice. They were friendly but they also couldn't do what you asked in term of service and help. In conclusion 1. Place: Very nice beach view from the balcony. Ask for the new wing (building B) However, it is not always clean or always ready. 2. Service: don't bother 3. Cleanliness: bring your own cup/glass/Thermos and towel 4. If you visit Rayong for beach, you may want to consider another hotel as well. 5. Bring your own car and check for places that you want to visit ahead.
Located at a peaceful beach area (beach not so clean), but difficult to access by public transport. We stayed in deluxe room at 9th Floor of the old building (hotel has new building too), the room was big enough and view from the balcony was nice. But the room were not cleaned properly and hot water in tub didn't work properly for which we asked to change the room but couldn't get it done. Breakfast was good and hotel staff were friendly.
I booked four beach view rooms for a golf outing. When we got there at 15:30, the rooms were not ready, even though they were pre-paid. The rooms were OK but outside the door smelled like raw sewage. We tried to use the in-room safe but the battery was dead and we were told that they did not have a replacement. There was no hot water when I wanted to take a shower. After an hour, many phone calls and several staff visits to turn on the faucet to check the water, I was told that the water heater was broken. During the day, my wife had to make a call to the desk every 2 hours to get them to turn the wifi back on as they kept disabling it. When we requested some sort of discount or partial refund when we checked out, we were told that there was nothing they could do to help us. Some of these issues are to be expected in the low cost resorts in Thailand but we paid 2,800 THB per night for a really bad experience.
I booked at this hotel from website just with only taking a look at its pictures ,locations(not too near community). In real, I found that it's quite far and isolated from the Ban chang district with poor maintenance about its facilities:fitness center (which now is storage room). I stayed on the deluxe rooms building with rooms on 7th to 10th floor.Although the external appearance of the building looks old, dilapidated parking lots, its cleaness and service of the staffs were satisfactory for just one night stay, the room standard was OK,2 swimming pools(one smaller in the deluxe building and big one on the middle building) are clean with view overlooking the sea.Maybe I stayed on low season ,few customers but no problem for me,I had my own car to drive to the market nearby .the lobby is designed to be open-air if you arrive at night ,maybe, too many insects or mosquitoes. Staffs there are very helpful, overall is OK, but too old building ,need facelift to lure tourists.
No-one cares, dirty, unsafe balcony has big gaps and pool area has holes around deck where children could easily fall to death Nails sticking out everywhere. Pool has green algey all the way through it with missing flooring in pool.Death trap of a hotel.Air con noisey. The whole hotel looks good on photos however be assured it's pure filth and everything is done cheap. They cannot even cook an egg properly for breakfast. Employees were too busy feeding there sad faces instead of actually helping. Hopeless/useless I would not even score it a 1 out of 10. Sleep in your car would be much better. Kids cannot stay here it's not worth the risk. Stayed in 100s of hotels. This is easily the worst by a country mile. Hated it!
Family of 6 stayed here for 8 nights while visiting my brother who lives in Ban Chang. We spend 5 nights in the old block, while a little dated the rooms were clean and comfortable. On 4th day - no hot water in the block, we suffered cold showers for a day and when they could not fix it we were moved (at no extra cost to the newer block above the reception area). Breakfast was fine, plenty of choice, if you do not like carnation milk in your tea or coffee take your drink to the cereal station and get fresh milk. There is a choice of western or Thai food - so try everything, Loved the fresh fruit. We had lunch at the hotel a couple of times which was very reasonably priced but did not eat there in in the evening as we were out most of the time. Pool was brilliant and sun beds were comfortable, plus plenty of shade if you prefer it to the hot sun. Every room had a sea view and private balcony. The hotel does need a bit of TLC and a handy man to sort the small repairs. The decking is worn out in places and while we were there they were blocking off parts of it near the pool and the steps in the small pool were in need of attention. Overall it is a nice hotel but should not be compared with the usual tourist hotels, it is mainly a conference/convention hotel. It is away from ban Chang town but not a problem for us as my brother had hired a minibus for the week to ferry us around.
I came to the hotel as part of a convention, and I expected a certain degree of professionalism. I didn't get it. On the positive side, the staff was friendly, the pool great, and the room itself was acceptable. That's it. On the negative side, well, there is a lot more. First service was abysmal. My friend had room service, ate, and put his dirty dishes outside the door. Three days later, the dishes were still sitting there. In order to get your room clean, you had to decipher a confusing control box inside the room. The common areas were atrocious. One fish pond in the lobby was about a foot deep. It was so filthy you could't see the fish. In another pond, the wind had blown over some potted plants. After three days, the plants had still not been up-righted. Near the gym (more on that later) and the child's playroom, there were rooms with the ceiling falling in and trash and dirt all over the floors. Outside the gym, if you wanted to take a look at the sea, you are greeted by piles of trash and some filthy water tanks of some sort. The gym was a joke. It have very little equipment, what was there was rusty, and there was no air conditioning. The child's play room was sparse, and I wouldn't want my kids playing in such a run-down area. Food was horrendous, from the breakfast buffet to the room service. We had a banquet, and there were 11 tables. The problem was that the so-called Chinese food platters were limited to eight, so our table didn't get three of the seven courses. The food was inedible, though, so maybe we didn't miss much. The Thai guests were livid and complained, but the manager just smiled and did nothing. The beach is OK, but passing all the garbage stuck under the building took away from the enjoyment, as did the overall upkeep of the beach. The view to the east was pretty dismal with refineries and factories. In the room, the tv was pretty much unwatchable. But with so limited a selection, I guess not much was missed. In these days of sat tv, there is no excuse for such a limited offering. I am not sure to what the "Spa" in the name was supposed to mean. There was no massage, health club, beauty shop, nor anything else associated with spas. For a Thai with a car, I might add a star to the rating. But for a foreigner without transport, the hotel is very isolated with absolutely nothing in the area. I did not try the food at a nearby hotel within walking distance, but any other places to go to eat or drink were too far away to go without a vehicle. The hotel has potential to be adequate. The pool alone is a great draw. But it really, really needs a makeover and better management. As it is, it is an over-priced shadow of what it should be.
This is a huge hotel complex, in a great setting but very poor on some essential details. The view from the old wing we stayed in was spectacular. The pool terrific. The breakfast buffet excellent. However, our room had no hot water and it was impossible to control the temperature of the air-conditioning, amenities one would have expected from a low budget beach shack, not to mention a modern, high end resort.
