Staff were responsive and met our needs adequately. Hotel location is excellent. Breakfast was very satisfactory and decor is beautiful. We are family with young kids and we got our money's worth! They represent themselves accurately on the website and we got our money's worth.
I was really impressed with the furniture and the decor of the hotel. Very nice hotel in what looks like a colonial building that has been tastefully renovated in a boutique style. This gives it a very different atmosphere to the typical chain hotel. Wonderful. The staff were fantastic, the hotel was a stylish throwback to colonial but with all modern comforts. A lovely stay.
A group of six of us from Perth, Australia stayed in early July 17. From the booking via telephone confirmation with hotel manager, Mr Hasrol, to the check in and the whole stay, we were very happy and enjoyed the rustic experience. Stayed in a Hutton Deluxe room which is about forty square meters(a very generous size) with a balcony facing the yard/garden. This room has a lovely 4 poster bed with a great bathroom with jacuzzi baths for 2 and separate shower. All Hutton Rooms are reconstructed with Chinese antique furniture, restored timber floors and individual art works from emerging or established artists. Breakfast in the room adjoining the pool was pleasant and the spread was adequate with cereals, toast, juices, fruits, small spread of hot food and cooked to order eggs, sausage and bacon and coffee and tea. Very highly recommended!!
I stayed in a Transfer Suite with Balcony. The positives: the room was great - it was spacious and I loved the history behind the hotel. I really like the "green" certification and felt quite comfortable there. I am not sure I needed to spring for the balcony, as it was too hot to really enjoy. The location was convenient to walk to many of the sites, and I found it quiet at night. Unfortunately, I encountered a few negatives with the hotel. Overall, the service is not what I expected for the price I paid. I don't think this is the fault of any of the staff per se, I think it's a lack of direction from the management. When we arrived, I felt like I was imposing on the front desk staff. It was almost like "oh, you're here". Also, the transfer suites are not obvious to find. I think it would be appropriate for staff to escort you some of the way, as opposed to telling you "take the first left, go around the pathway, etc.". This isn't a Motel 6, it's supposed to be a high-quality hotel. Also, the shower was dirty. And we did not get the amenities refilled the next day. Oh, and there was a light out in the bathroom. Finally, at checkout, nobody asked if we enjoyed the stay, how things were, etc. They didn't even ask if we needed a taxi to the airport - I was getting an Uber - but you'd think they would ask. I know these are minor issues, but again, for the price, I would expect things like this to be tended to. The breakfast was average at best - if it wasn't included, I would have opted to eat elsewhere. Finally, neither pro nor con: at least in our room, there was a stained glass window, where you could technically see into the bathroom from the bedroom. If you are big on privacy, this might make you uncomfortable. The pool was small - this didn't bother me, but if you are looking for this, be warned. Finally, the area is very quiet and while convenient, is not exactly in a "bustling" part of town. Again, for me, I didn't mind this at all - to each his or her own. Overall, for the money I paid, I would have expected better service and attention to detail. If I go back to Penang, I will probably look at other options. Was it a terrible stay? No. Do I think there are better options for your money out there? Yes.
Colonial style hotel very sympathetically refurbished. Lovely big four poster bed, seating area with quality furnishings. Jacuzzi bath and separate shower very nice bathroom. The pool was an added bonus and although it is small I had it to myself on both days I stayed. The tapas was very nice, but breakfast which was extra was very disappointing. We received a cold class of juice and a cold towel (much needed as extremely hot outside) on arrival, which was a nice touch. Highly recommended.
We loved our four nights at Hotel Penaga. This beautifully renovated building has everything you need - comfortable bed, spotlessly clean and spacious rooms, well equiped bathroom and spa, free wifi, swimming pool, bar and restaurant. It is a cool and quiet sanctuary amid the bustle of George Town. Although you are within easy walk of cafes and restaurants, it is in a quieter area on the edge of town. We loved the way that the building has been so thoughtfully renovated and decorated and maintained.
This is a great small hotel, beautifully rebuilt with the ethical reuse of older local materials such as timber, roof tiles and windows. A regular haven. Convenient for buses to the other side of penang and the shopping malls at gurney drive. The staff are very gracious in their service. In particular Diana on reception is amazing - went out of her way to help our group organise transport and other things for our activities. There was an issue in my room and the staff on duty, along with Adelia the manager were prompt to resolve this. Not only did they offer me a choice of alternate rooms to ensure our comfort, they offered various compensation for minor damage and our inconvenience. The pool, while small, is a lovely garden respite after walking in the heat discovering and exploring. We were here a week and intend to return next year when we all return for our next reunion.
Very unassuming from the outside thus hotel is very large and well appointed inside with a traditional feel but all the mod cons. Rooms are very large and spacious: lots of wood and louvre shutters, and Chinese antique furniture. Very comfortable and authentic at the same time.

My husband and I stayed in Hotel Penaga for 2 days. Our experience was wonderful. We arrived early morning and they let us do early check-in without any extra charge. The receptionist and other staff were very nice. We loved the way the hotel is decorated.
