The grounds and the swimming pool play area for the kids are excellent at this hotel BUT the rooms are very RUNDOWN . There is no water pressure in the bathroom The staff are very friendly and seem hard working .The breakfast was just okay . Location is fine with access to the beach . Night markets and bars restaurants just straight out the gate . Like other guest have said surprise Shangri-La have got their name on this place ..
Whenever I visited Penang, my family and I will be staying at this resort. It is family and children friendly, with Kids Club just within the premises. If you are planning to go for a stay soon, suggest you sign up for the Golden Circle membership. Membership is free but when you check in, you will have the priviledge of having the check in done in the comfort of a separate lounge. Drinks are served upon arrival which is a pleasant experience, especially after a long journey from the airport to the hotel. Seaview room is preferred especially if you are a light sleeper. Hillview room faced the mosque and in the early hours of the morning, if you are a light sleeper, you will be easily awakened. The corner suite is a luxury. Nice big balcony and directly facing the sea. Stayed in the corner suite on a few occasion and it was lovely. Breakfast is nice, with a widespread of cuisine. Usually very crowded so do be early. In the evening, you could try dining at Sigi for pasta/pizza. On Friday nights, they have BBQ buffet....a nice change. Try to take the table inside the restaurant as the outdoor seats are sometimes littered with bird droppings and you can't see them clearly in the night. There is a pedicure and manicure service in the hotel. Prices are not cheap but they provide a decent service and is convenient. Alternatively, you could try the spa at the Rasa Sayang resort next door. They serve a good buffet spread esp on Thu nights. Across the hotel, you will be able to see Andrew's Kampung. A non-aircon restaurant that serves good and delicious food. Their crispy duck is a must try. They have friend ice-cream too. We had dinner and lunch there on several occasions. Andrew is very friendly and you could ask him for recommendations if you are not sure what to order. if you are not able to see the restaurant from the hotel, you could ask the hotel staff for directions (just across the road from the hotel). We also tried the thai food at the Golden Thai Seafood Village, just a distance away from the resort and within walking distance. They served live seafood. You can choose from the variety of fish, prawns crab, lobsters that are available in the tank and have them cook them in the style you like. Price wise, I thought it is pricey. Andrew Kampung is still the best and price is reasonable. Give it a try if you are there.
A short 3 day trip with my family n 2 other friend's family. Hotel was ok, expected a lil more standard for the price paid. Need a lil bit of makeover in the toilet as bath tub, wall tiles n doors shows signs of ageing. Surprising small tv for a deluxe room. But overall, Good service from d staff. Breakfast buffet spread was good. The kids had loads of fun in the pool. nice water play area and shaded area for the kids pool.. All d kids had a great time at adventure zone which is located inside the resort. Night market starts just at the entrance. Plenty of places of interest accesible by a short grab ride.. Everyone had great fun..3.5/5..
Overall ok, swimming pool facilities are fantastic, kids very enjoy, full of pool life guards around make you feel very safe for the kids, breakfast food are good too. I deduct one star mainly due to hotel cleanliness of the pool sitting/rest area, coffee house and pool towels (some towels already due for dispose but hotel still using), and also front desk check in take long time to get in our room.
I am sorry to give this hotel a bad review as I checked in on 31/3 and the next day woke up my daughter’s face and neck was covered with bed bug bites. They were swollen and itchy. She got the bites from the extra beds she slept. I had highlighted to the front service Indian lady the next day during my check out. She didn’t even say a sorry or highlight this issue to her immediate supervisor.. just immediately settle my check out process .. that’s it. Very disappointed and spoilt our day. This is our first and definitely the last stay in golden sands hotel
The reception area pools and gardens are beautiful at this resort but the rooms and corridors areas are in need of a refurbishment. Carpets are stained and stretched, wood work is chipped and broken and the walls are in need of new paper and paint. The breakfast buffet had a lot of choices but I think it could have been kept a bit cleaner.
Arrived early and waited at least 30 minutes before I was allocated a room. Very disappointed- the room smelt mouldy and there was pubic hairs on the toilet. Asked to change but they were fully booked. Went to Leave and then the duty manager found a much nicer room- I still preferred not to stay. Westerners need to cover up as most people in pool area are in full swimming burqas.
Despite knowing upon check in that we had our 2 year old with us they gave us a room on the smoking floor without informing us. It only clicked after we registered the weird smell and ashtray on the bathroom counter. Immediately asked for our room to be changed first thing in the morning due to the fact that our little one was already fast asleep and it was past 10pm at night. Front desk staff was quick to oblige. However the next morning we were told we could only change rooms at 3pm. Not what we agreed upon before so hubby asked that they try and rep-update us with a call up to the room. It's now 10 minutes to three pm. Not a single call or update has been received. Also, we were greeted with the remnants of the the last guests excretions in the toilet. So either the toilet is broken or housekeeping needs a bit more attention to detail.
Well situated very near the beach with many activities plus Massages. Excellent grounds with swimming pools and bars plenty of seating in grassy areas. Children's water play area with slides etc. Restaurant excellent with a wide range of very good food to suit all. Would go again.
This hotel is in good location, though some way from Georgetown. We were warmly greeted considering it was nearly midnight when we arrived. Check-in was conducted quite quickly and we were given our room key. We were in Room 250 which is about 2/3 of the way round the building and facing the pools/gardens. It was a lovely room, although the building is looking bit 'tired'. Very comfortable bed. There are two pools, one of which is roped off, making a kids' pool and an adults only pool. The other is used by all. A good temperature for swimming. Although thee are a lot of sunbeds dotted around, not many had mattresses and there were not enough umbrellas. We were Dinner and Breakfast guests and most meals were taken in the garden room, which is buffet and quite chaotic! The food was quite 'samey'. There are two evenings a week when you have to eat in Sigi's, but other nights we had to pay to eat there. Drinks are expensive. Unfortunately our second week coincided with the school holidays so everything and everywhere were extremely busy and noisy. There is a night market which starts near the entrance to the hotel so it is manic during the evenings. However, if you want to go into Georgetown taxis are inexpensive and the local buses cost peanuts! Taxi drivers are happy to wait for you for your return journey. Lots to do and see. All in all we enjoyed this stay.
