Took 4 rooms and stayed for 4 days 3 nights. Check in was smooth and was done at the Golden Circle Lounge where you can sit in comfort watching TV and the small ones (if any) can play the iPad at the iPad station. Brilliantly done! We had a suite and 3 executive sea view rooms and were given higher floor with good view. Our suite had a living room with a bathroom complete with shower and the other room where the bedroom was located had a bathroom with bathtub. The Shangri La scent diffuser placed in the bedroom gave a real soothing smell and I ended up buying one. Breakfast was great, from the service right to the spread. The entire staff from the Hotel Manager right down to the busboy were greetings and attending to our needs all the time. We also tried the buffet dinner and had lunch at Sigi’s. You can also cross sign your bills when you dine at any of Rasa Sayang’s outlets next door. We had Assam Laksa at the Market Place, awesome! Great place to have a break with family!
Rooms are old, you have to get into the bath tub to shower on a dirty shower mat. The pipes roar with age as soon as you turn the shower on. The front rooms face the mosque so expect noise every 5 AM. In as much as the breakfast is well coordinated, you have to line up to get service in the morning. But I have to say they compensate all the above with the good food they serve. Beers are overpriced and better to have the locals buy them for you at half the price in the market stands right outside. Basically, i loved the food!
Great facilities for families, especially those with younger children. Rooms clean and excellent, though some parts of the resort showing its age. Lovely pool, water slides and playground (Adventure Zone). I wouldn't recommend eating at the Garden Cafe, expected better from a Shangri-La restaurant. You're better off taking a 5-minute walk up the road to the hawker center for decent Penang street food.
Spent 4 days in Jan-2018 in Golden Sands Resort. Well located, just next to the beach, and with a large kids friendly swimming pool. Buffer breakfast is ok. 2 restaurants: Main Restaurant with buffet and A-La-Carte, and a Beach bar grill. Place is clean and well maintained. Several restaurants (western, middle East or local Asian) are at walking distance from hotel, for the ones who want to eat outside the hotel. From the beach, several activities can be organized (paragliding, jetski, banana boat, etc)
The loud speaker on the outside of the rooms roadside are horrendous !!!!! Loud and happen from 5am for approx 3 mins each and continues throughout the day. If your on holidays and like to start your day at 5am this hotel is for you. If you like to sleep in a have a good nights rest I suggest you request a beach view or another hotel !!!!! Breakfast Average , poolside food very average. Would not call Shangri La standard. Very disappointing.
We have just left this hotel today as it is simply filthy dirty, we did get a full refund and booked into the Park Royal along the bay. Different quality and lovely room. More people should leave photos on here so the hotel is forced to take action.
While the hotel is old it has generally been maintained reasonably well - we had no complaints with our room. It is very good for kids (we had none though) and while I have noted various negative write ups about the impact of kids it did not affect us (we are late 60's). The Ocean room views were ideal (we had an Executive King 5th floor location). Very good breakfasts were included and there is a good alternative offering from Siggys Café/Bar/restaurant. There is a neat very short course 9 hole chip/putt golf area (holes 24 - 69 metres). Would go back again.
Have stayed numerous times & the hotel is usually lots of fun for young & old! However, Xmas was very disappointing - hardly any decorations or music :( But New Year was a totally different story!! The staff in food & beverage were a mixed bag & bizarrely one of the 'stars' was stuck in room service - Manesh was missed by many people this year!! The other outstanding staff member was Teena 'Mr Swagger' - always a big smile & nothing is too much trouble :(:(
This was one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. I could tell from the moment I walked in and heard the kids screaming, waited in line at reception, while listening to Mr Karaoke (the resident singer) murder my favourite songs from the 1950's, 60's and 70's (don't worry - he won't ruin your songs from the 1990's onwards). Then we went to our room, which upon opening smelt like it hadn't been open for months - extremely musty. The floor was so dirty that I had to jump into the shower to clean up after unpacking. To be fair, the hotel did mop the floor the next morning after I rang housekeeping. But then I made the mistake of taking a bath. From that view I could see all of the mold under everthing. Also we could hear Mr Karaoke from our room until 11:00pm each night - kill me now. To top it off, there was a diverse clientele from many cultures. I was very unsettled to see how many of the men treated their wives and daughters with total neglect and how their sons screamed at their sisters - not a very relaxing or warm environment. The positive element of the hotel was the friendliness of all of the staff and willingness to help. Alas, we forewent two days of pre-paid stay (unrefundable) and moved to a better hotel. And Golden Sands staff, please do not bother with your pre-paid templated regrettable message. Perhaps your strategy is working. You were so packed, one could not move in the hotel.
Great for kids. Located right on a sandy beach. Has multiple swimming pools with water slides, as well as a kids play area called Adventure Zone. Entry to Adventure Zone was included in our room package. Rooms are spacious and well maintained. Our rooms were not ready when we arrived around 2 pm and we were offered complimentary coffee and drinks while we waited.
