The grounds and staff are very good. The exterior from the beach side is also excellent as are the pools, bars and general aspect. The interior is entirely opposite and gives rise to the rating. The arrival reception is tiny and seems to be staffed by one guy who knows how it works and a couple of juniors who have to go off to get answers. Very frustrating. They have massive water leaks in the foyer and Breakfast area, at 7am the staff were splashing through the puddles. The breakfast offering is very ordinary with little variety. The fresh milk...isn't....alternate days have Tandoori sausages, they are Ok but not for breakfast! The lifts are very used and the corridors to the rooms!!! best seen through sunglasses.?.they are horrible. The rooms offer all the usual and are pretty tired. The step up and into the bath is very dangerous and the bath so narrow a size 9 foot prevents you from standing sideways!. Somedays you might get all the towels and water you wants. Other days just one towel and one small water (for 2 people), you can even lose the spare coffee mug and room key (for the power) if the officious cleaner is doing your room! Dont expect the balcony to be wiped over or washed..or even the floors in bed and bathroom . We had one of the pool facing rooms, not on a high floorl, only level 3, but at additional cost... deluxe not superior!! so pity the people on the road side who did not have the garden/pool/sea views to offset the conditions. We also had the threat on No Power for 12 hours, massive response from disgruntled guests did not eventuate and no hot water until 5.30pm, outcry from those with kids! water did come on earlier though. However these threats were just advised by a notice and no attempts made for conciliation or alternatives. Just this is what we propose to do....put up with it! Only the position and grounds made the stay enjoyable.

My son was badly bitten by bed bugs while we are having a holiday in Penang. We have no choice but to throw away some clothes, shoes, and a backpack. Our holiday is totally ruined. Our main worry now is that we might bring the bed bugs back home.....A very bad experience...

We have stayed at this resort many times & love it. The rooms are a good size with tea & coffee making facilities & housekeeping of rooms was very good. Bathroom is nic with good quality shower gel, shampoo etc. We had a sea facing room with a balcony for the first time. There is a very good variety of food at breakfast, although we did find the egg station quite disorganised. We have never encountered this before, even during busy periods. It was fairly quiet when we were there although the two weekends were very busy & there were huge queues for a table at breakfast. On previous holidays they have opened Sigi's restaurant for breakfast to take the overflow. The trick is to go for breakfast by 8.30. The pool area and gardens are lovely & a great pool for kids. There is also an adults only pool & a fenced off pool spa. The location is very good, right on the beach. Plenty of eating places nearby & a free shuttle service into Georgetown. Staff are very friendly & welcoming & we look forward to our next visit.

Saw a great package offer for Golden Sands and booked our week stay in June and we had a great time at the resort. The facilities for kids were really interesting and fun. There was even a sheltered area at the kids pool area to block out the sun, lots of deck chairs available for the sun lover. The private beach is clean and there are a lot of activities available, eg. parasailing, banana boat. The Adventure Zone is really a wonderful treat for my kids and they had an exhilarating time playing on the slides, which look really scary for my kids but they took to it like ducks to water. There is also a section for toddlers. It was great that both adults and kids can have fun using the facilities. Staff spoke good English and service at the restaurant is great. Breakfast spread is very good and there is a kids corner so the kids can get their own food. The idea of the egg order tag is very good just place your orders and the egg of your choice will be served to you by the waiter. Kids eat free for the BBQ buffet meal, which is great because my 2 kids eat like chickens. Golden Sands is just 5 mins walk from the Long Beach Food Court and there are lots of other restaurants and eateries nearby. For those who can't do without their fast food there are Macdonald's, KFC and Subway just across the road from the resort. The night market starts from the resort entrance. The free shuttle to Georgetown is really convenient for us to go to Georgetown to try out the delicious street food and to do our shopping. Good wifi connection within the resort compound, even in the pool area. Getting from the resort to the airport is convenient as there is a taxi company just opposite the resort. Would recommend this hotel, good location, great facilities, great food, great service, the only down side we have to go home.....

Great resort and location, service was good. A little bit quiet this time but was no problem and could have stayed a few more days. Excellent service with staff remembering us from the last time we stayed. This was our 6th time here and would not stay any where else.

Its a very beautiful resort, the USP of the resort are as under: location, kids friendly, staff happy to help, beautiful pool area, kids play area. They do have live band every evening which is really great. Overall a highly recomended hotel for people traveling with kids

My family of 5, three adults and two young children aged 7 & 9 recently spent 3 nights at Golden Sands from 9 to 12,.June We were recommended to this hotel by a friend and we did not regret our decision to stay there. When we arrived , the staff at the reception counter were friendly and spoke English . We were upgraded to a family suite on the 5th level when two adjoining rooms we had requested were not available. The two bedrooms were large and had very comfortable firm beds . The swimming pools which were spread out on the grounds of the hotel complex made it appear to be less crowded, as it was school holidays with many families with children enjoying a dip. We opted to go for a dip in the open sea which was just outside the hotel compound. The beach was surprisingly clean and so was the water in the sea . Dinner at Sigi , the outdoor restaurant was relaxing and nice ... we had a good spread of grilled seafood like prawns, beef and chicken . It was good value for money . There was no charge for children bellow 12 years of age . Our two grandsons visited the Adventure Zone for teo hours the next day and thoroughly enjoyed the various slides there . There was an almost vertical slide which looked formidable but my elder grandson took on the challenge and went for it too without any mishap. The breakfast spread served for the three mornings at the cafe was adequate for us as there was a fairly good variety of food . There were various cooking stations to order food we desired . All in all, my family had a very enjoyable holiday at Golden Sands . We highly recommend this hotel .

Spent 4 nights at the resort. Took about 40 mins from the airport by taxi, by passing Georgetown. Hotel does offer airport transfer to make transitions more hassle free. Being a golden circle member, you will be ushered to the cool lounge where you can check in with comfort. Was pleasantly surprised to have a room ready when we arrived close to 11am, 3 hours before the official check in timing. Additional bed, or murphy bed can be provided subjected to availability and the room will still have sufficient space for movement. The hotel caters to a whole myriad of activities and food options and kids will sure to have a blast. A reasonably sized children themed pool with two waterslides will keep children entertained, not to mention the indoor playground where kids will never have enough of it. But be sure to be properly attired with long pants and long sleeves as it is their primary rule for kids. In house guests will still have to pay for the 2 hour playtime at a discounted rate but with selected room packages, it will be included FOC during the period of stay but still limited to 2 hours of playtime per day. Beach is closely connected with many 3rd party companies offering water sports activities at your own discretion. Daily buffet breakfast spread is vast enough to fill your appetite. Kid’s corner is also available with easy to use utensils/cutleries. Located just walking distance outside of the resort is Long Beach hawker where there is no lack of food options. Be prepared to sweat it out over nice dinner. Recommended to try: Hainanese fried spring roll where the filling is generous, prawn noodle, char kway teow, BBQ chicken wings, satay and the bak kut teh where the stock is fully infused with herbs. Just across the resort is the Petronas petrol station with Subway & McDonalds. KFC is also located just diagonally across as well. Daily night market will be set up outside the hotel and there will be a few good buys if can spot one. Overall, the experience is pleasant and positive and number 1 choice for families with kids and last but not least, there is a 24 hour launderette for a cost of RM 20 for washing and RM 20 for drying which is very convenient. My only hope will be to have the in room TV fitted with suitable USB ports for external storage device connection where I can have the option of watching movie files. Will definitely return again.

We came here after staying at the quaint, boutique and beautiful Edison Georgetown. Immediately from check in, the service was terrible, it was overbooked, the room was not ready, loud. We proceed to walk around the resort whilst waiting for our room - it was a madness of kids, screaming adults, beach vendors taking up the whole sandy beach, creepy dudes looking at women. There was not at all the ambience we were looking for from a beach resort. Then we managed to check into our rooms, the room was old, the bathroom is small, old, missing toiletries. The bedding felt old. The whole experience was horrible! What makes it worse is that for the price of 160$/night in Malaysia (where hotel prices are lower than average in the Southeast Asia region) was an absolute rip off! We booked 2 nights here but couldn't wait to get out and back to Vietnam. Never coming back or recommending this to anyone! For such a global brand like Shangri La they should invest in refurbushing and rebranding or cleaning it up - this "resort" is a large stretch of the word.

We were looking forward to escaping the winter chill and heading to a new destination. After a long day of travelling from Australia with the two kids, it was unfortunate that our 'welcome' by the reception person was so unfriendly. Anything we asked was met with one word answers and it seemed that she really didn't want to be there. We really didn't get much information at all. It did not bode well for the stay! Luckily, the rest of the staff more than made up for this. Our room was on the 7th (highest) floor and overlooked the street. As mentioned in other reviews, there is a mosque at the front of the hotel and the call to prayer was quite loud (in the morning). However, we got used to it, and although it would've been nice to not be woken up at 5 -ish every morning it wasn't really an issue. A pool facing room would lessen the noise. Breakfast was nice and plentiful, and the staff worked hard to get the plates cleared. It was particularly busy on the Sunday, expect to wait for a table, our wait was around 5 minutes. We all loved the pool, not cold at all - very easy to enter. The kids especially loved the water slides, and the life guards were very observant. We had a kids fun package which allowed them to go to the Adventure Zone and free meals. They had wonderful time - and the Adventure Zone's air conditioning was particularly inviting especially in the heat! We found we had to look over our final invoice though, as we were charged for the items we had included in our package. This took some time to undo, and I think the hotel needs to find a better way to work this out. Maybe it all comes back to our initial check in issues...we'll never know! We only ate dinner at the resort once when it was my birthday. A nice touch from the hotel was being given a birthday cake which was yummy! The dinner was nice, not overly pricey for a resort. The food around the hotel however was great, go for a walk to the right of the hotel (through the street markets) and head to Long Beach café, grab a table remember your table number and order the food of your choice. They will bring it to your table and you pay there. There is wait staff to take your drinks order (we were there with the kids so often, they remembered our drinks order!). It is inexpensive and beautiful food. A bit further down on the beach is Bora Bora, another great place to eat and drink. We utilised the free shuttle to Georgetown, which is well worth a visit. It drops and picks you up from Hotel Jen and you can grab a cab/Uber/bike whatever from there. You need a full day if you want to go to Penang Hill, see the incredible street art and clan jetties and soak up the atmosphere. We also went to the sister resort Rasa Sayang next door. You can eat/drink there and charge it to your room, but you can't use their facilities. We were told in no uncertain terms that we are 4 star guests and we can't use 5 star facilities! Tails between our legs, we headed back.... All in all, we had a wonderful time. And if we were in Penang again, we would stay there and bask in our 4 'stariness'!
